In this video I replace the corroded and leaking fuel tank on my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 3.0 CRD WK/WH.
I swap over the diesel lift pump/fuel tank sender unit, plastic feed and return pipes and rust proof the replacement tank using cavity wax. I also clean up the cradle which had gathered a lot of mud and debris and coat the relevant area with wax too. I crimp a new spade terminal to the earth wire and protect using heat shrink.

Hello, thank you for your video. That really helped me a lot. I wanted to check my tank because rusting through the tank is a known problem with Grand Cherokees like WH/WK. Unfortunately, we probably have different power plugs in Germany. These have an additional security. I would have gone insane. Now the tank is back in, nicely treated with rust converter. Greetings from Upper Bavaria

Hi. Thank you for the video. I have a 2008 Grand Cherokee and i suspect this is a job i will have to do at some time. That tank was a great find. Never seen a used one in such great condition. I thought it was brand new when i first saw it.

Thanks for the comment. Yes indeed a rare find and to think someone went to all the effort of replacing the tank, then the car got scrapped! Satisfying job actually but definitely best to enlist a friend to help.

Another really good, clear video. I have seen plastic replacement fuel tanks on ebay for around £400 but I don't know how suitable they are. It looked like a really difficult job but well done!

Thank you! I was wary about an aftermarket plastic one as I couldn’t be sure of the quality when ordering online. It was a bit of a pig to do by myself and I can still smell diesel about myself a week on from the job! Glad it’s done.

You did a fantastic job on your own that must have been quiet an effort refitting the new tank under the car. Mine developed a leak at the fuel filter and I had to replace the seals. The filter was swimming in diesel around the outside and I couldn't get the smell of diesel off my hands for about 3 days!

Great video, and you're right, Diesel's bloody horrible stuff to work with followed by brake fluid lol. I'm going to have to replace my Tank shortly as its starting to leak when Its full, PS, its nice to hear a bit of humour while you're under the Jeep, And there's nothing like having a pint after you've finished fixing the car😃😃

Great job Auto Night. I have just done some maintenance on my Jeep Grand Cherokee. To be honest I have just used it as a work horse. Driving all around the U.K. to different contracting projects. I’ve payed attention to the front end upper and lower end ball joints. Brake pads and rotas/disc’s. Glow plugs necessary maintenance when I have the time (very difficult when your away from your base. But I have soldiered through. Last mot was immediate repairs. So I had to weld some plates on the rear wheel arches full weld runs. That’s a wake up call. So my underbody went on an emergency maintenance overhaul. Rusty as. Well what. Gordon Ramsey would say. Glad I did cause I caught a lotta stuff in time. Must say I silver soldered a few bits not critical. Like you. I fanny around with my motors when others are down the pub. Maybe not talking horse shit. But that’s how I roll too. Love you man. Thanks for the heads up. ✌🏻🙌🏻🍷🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇬🇧

Hey, your comment made me smile for so many reasons! Really great to hear about your Jeep too - they certainly are a rugged work horse. So good to hear that others enjoy working on their vehicles the way I do. Thank you for your comment and kind words 😀

After replacing the fuel pump in my 2006 Jeep grand cherokee laredo 3.7 WK- Im now having a problem with a vapor lock and my new pump is making a ringing/humming noise off and on-is there a way to fix it with a inline check valve or inline filter of some sort. I have to release pressure on the fuel rail to re-crank it after it runs for more than 20 minutes/ which is a possible fire risk.

It’s not something I’ve encountered before but I’d be wary of performing any modifications to a fuel system. Most of these vehicles are diesel in Europe and I must say I’ve never seen a petrol model here.
@00chapmano
@00chapmano Жыл бұрын
Did you have to remove the fuel pump fuse or disengage anyting else electronically before doing this?
@autoknight747
@autoknight747 Жыл бұрын
It was just a multi plug connector under the car (not live with ignition off) which was disconnected and reconnected, with no exposure to fuel. Battery should be disconnected when working with fuel and had this been a petrol model with flammable vapours, instead of diesel, it would have been!

is there a way to get the gas out-something is blocking right at the tank as far as trying to use a siphon hose.
@autoknight747
@autoknight747 Жыл бұрын
There is a small spring loaded flap in the tank that allows fuel in but then stays closed to prevent fuel in the tank from going back up the filler neck. Might be catching on that.

@@autoknight747 got the new fuel pump installed and now Im guessing the security system now wont let it crank (red dot light on the dash that Ive never seen before). Is there any way to reset everything without calling out someone to reprogram everything-its a 2006 Cherokee Laredo 3.7 l

in your video the red dot goes off-mine is staying on. Looked it up in the manual and this red dot is the anti theft and it is supposed to go off.

How did you manage to get the bolt near the driveshaft off with just a spanner? Such little room to get any force/torque into it
@autoknight747
@autoknight747 Жыл бұрын
A long spanner was the the only way on that bolt as there was insufficient clearance for an impact socket and breaker bar. Was a while back now but from memory it took quite a bit of effort!

@@autoknight747 hahah yep finally managed very slowly, like an eighth of a turn at a time but we managed. Wasnt even my fuel pump that was the culprit of no fuel reaching the engine so a few hours wasted 🤣 thanks mate

@@aaddaamm90 Ah ok, good luck. Why they never fitted an inspection plate for the tank sender/pump, like other makes do, is beyond me! Be interested to know what is causing your issue though.

Changed the fuel filter a few days ago and the resistor that had been placed on the swirl motor plug has a casing which had melted through a little. The fuse for the IPM kept blowing, knowing I had messed around there recently I believe the little bit of metal poking through the casing had moved since I was fiddling around in there. Sure enough some duct tape and tucking into a little area away from metal fixed the issue and all the codes/inability to get power to the pump dissapeared
