A video of changing the driver side fuel injector leaking copper seals. This is the same job as replacing the injectors. Applies to all vehicles that have the Mercedes OM642 engine.

This is a great video,. Im about to take this project on with 185,000 kms. Number 6 is leaking. I replaced 5 glow plugs yesterday. Ya i said 5. Number 5 cyl’s glow plug seems to be separated and spins, with no leaks. So the ses light will have to be lived with again. Im a retired mechanic and appreciated your detail and patience. I will borrow or purchase the puller and reamer. Thanks again.

Hi Stephen, thank you very much for your useful video. I have the same OM642 engine on my 2007 JEEP Commander (made in Austria) with amost 300k km., It's starting OK when hot, but when cold I have to do two diesel heating sequences (...the yellow curl) to have a better starting...and sometimes have some little smoke (awful smell !) out of the exhaust with a irregular idling for no more than a few minutes. So I'll try to remove the injectors and send it to a speciallist to diagnose them. Got that 60 ft.in (5 ft.lb?) for the long inyector retainer bolts, but...do you have any torque numbers for the those fuel line tubes "nuts" ?. Thanks !.

I think you need to read the codes and do a leak test on the injectors before replacing anything. A good scanner will tell you the correction value on the injectors too.

@@SteveRivett thank you for that link!. No, I don't have remote start, it's the sport model. First I'll check if it has the "black death" or not, but sometimes has like exhaust smell inside, and will do the inyector leak (copper seal failure) check. I also will check the turbo exhaust pipe green o'ring, because somebody told me that can leak from there too. Forgot to tell you that about 23k. km ago I did the swirl motor delete with the resistor...working fine. Thank you!

I don't see you responding to comments but hopefully you can make an exception. I have heard the fuel line or injectors are under high pressure. How do you relief the pressure? Do you need to "bleed" the system when it's back together? Thx

KZbin doesn't notify me about most comments. The CRD is under very high pressure, it is dangerous as the diesel can cut your skin and go into your blood stream. All you can do to bleed the system is to cycle the key a couple times and crank until it starts.

The common rail pressure dissipates virtually as soon as the engine stops running . These engines are self bleeding . Just have to crank until it starts .

I cleaned the injector and put it back. Issue still there, replaced it with the injector next to it and the issue still exists in the same original cylinder so it's not an issue with the injector. I think I have sut and grime that is preventing the injector from being completely sealed.

Remove the copper seal and put a new one on, also check there isn't an old one stuck down the hole. The seal face must be clean and undamaged, there are reaming tools to recut the face if it's damaged.

@@jeremytodd4906 yup ended up doing that and got the issue resolved. However, I'm now experiencing diesel leak from the fuel return line (black rubber tube) idk I changed the rubber O-ring twice and no bueno

Hi im from the UK but have a wk/wh 3.0 crd and have a fault code P0278, do i just need A new injector or could this be something else?

I would do an injector leak test on all of the injectors together and see if that injector is passing a lot of fuel back through the return.

I had a similar issue. Ended up putting two bottles of diesel fuel injector cleaner in the fuel tank and cleared the code and everything went fine for more than 20,000 km now

go to rock auto and check the fuel injectors there, it will show a few other Mercedes that match

you will need to replace it with a new or rebuilt injector, hopefully they will take your broken one in as a core. Rock Auto has them some times.

So... I ended up breaking my injector bolt. I have no idea what to do, I can't figure out how to get it out without damaging the threads. Do you have any suggestions? I think I had a crappy bolt because it broke BEFORE I reached my torque spec. I have the Grand Cherokee CRD 3.0 diesel.

There is an OM642 injector bolt removal fixture you can buy to drill out the bolt. You may have had dirt in the hole or you may have had a torque wrench problem. Hopefully it is one of the easier bolts to access for drilling.

You have to use brand new bolts . These bolts are 1 use only stretch bolts .

You haven't configured the ECU for the new injector?

That's a good point, there is some function in my Autel 906BT to adjust the injectors so I should have mentioned this. In my case I put the injector back in as the seal was just leaking.

@@leftR-tardation Yes, each injector has its own tolerance that must be configured in the ECU.

Injectors are elements that have to work with more precision than their manufacture allows (especially piezoelectric ones), so, after manufacturing them, their deviation is measured, and a code is engraved on the body. that code is entered into the ecu, which applies that correction.

I am not sure, you will usually hear it and smell exhaust under the hood if they are leaking
