For all the hype they didn't sell that well. Much like the muscle cars of a generation before, the target demographic could barely afford them. And that's before they tried getting insurance. This is about as good as the Evo got here in the states. The next gen were still capable cars but lacked the soul of these early '00s designs. $36k is laughable. Maybe after two or three years, on a used car lot! I'm convinced these were kept in short supply on purpose by Mitsubishi so dealers could mark them up well over $40 and sometimes closer to $50k. Myself and a couple co workers were in the market at that time. No way any of us would have been able to swing it even at $36. Also the insurance companies weren't fooled by the 4 door sedan body and Lancer name, these things were VERY expensive to insure even with a clean MVR

Crazy that my Hyundai Elantra N has the same horsepower, same torque and same MSRP 20 years later.
