Well, MotorWeek, you did it again. You brought back some great memories. I was 21 back in 2003. I wanted both of these cars so bad. I remember going to the Mitsubishi and Subaru dealers drooling over these. I landed on the Evo only because it came with a radio lol. One issue was that every dealer in my area had $10k markups (Sounds familiar) on both, and no dealer would let you test drive these. I waited a few months, and I was able to make a deal at sticker for a black one coming right off of the truck. This was the most exciting time of my life. I immediately started modifying the Evo and hit 75-80 for some 1/4-mile runs. Many years, and 30+ cars later, the Evo is still one of my favorite cars! Back when you actually had to drive a car, a true experience. I still have my owner's manual and window sticker 🙂 Thanks again MotorWeek!!

These were good times. Cars today just don't have the outside the box quirkiness and passion that made cars like this so much fun. I remember seeing an STI for the first time in 2003 at an autocross. It was early, still dark out. When those HID lights came on and slowly started to brighten... well I finally got an 06 STI in 2011 then proceeded to improve it (mostly suspension and reliability mods). I love the car! It has such a unique driving experience. Powering out of a corner is where this car really shines. I do have an affinity for the EVO too especially the 6.5 TME.

I remember back in the day when these hit the streets, they were slaying at the time svt cobras, corvettes, Porsches, 360 Ferrari Modenas etc. When you saw one in your mirror pulling up, u knew u weren't gonna win. They lost that advantage over the decades, they never kept up with modern day hp and tq. Now a modern day camry can walk em stock for stock.

yes and its sad tbh. all they had to do was give it more power and keep up with the competition. subaru and mitsu just never did. cars barely gained any hp. the new p25 sti is the only one that got a respectable HP gain, but its limited and over 500k.

I remember when these cars came out very well. Was never a fan of the styling having owned FC turbo and FD RX-7s along with being a huge fan of all of the other 90s Japanese halos but the performance was undeniable. I remember reading that the Evo was running 19 psi from the factory with a warranty and it blew my mind. Add to that the practicality of four doors and seats and the ability to tune without hitting the rollers. Awesome cars indeed.

Recently sat in an yellow low mile EVO, the interior hasn’t aged well. The steering wheel had begun to pull away from itself, the gauges were tiny and the doors felt lighter and cheaper than early miata doors. Shifter was bolt action though and the seats were outstanding.

A friend sent me this. It's fun going back in time. I'm still driving my 04 Evo. Tuned by WORKS vit has a good deal more power in it's rebuilt 4G63T engine. Garaged and cared for all it's life, it still looks and drives like new but doesn't look like the typical JDM , as it's mostly stock with different 18" forged aluminum wheel and a tasteful carbon fiber lip spoiler up from. It's like driving a celebrity here in Arizona. I'm constantly bombarded with lookers and buyers. I've been offered nearly double what I paid for it new, but I'm not parting with it anytime soon!

When the Evo X Final Editions were available I went and looked at one. Was ready to get it and the sales manager stepped in and said no because I was making them honor the internet price they had of 34,500. Disappointed I didn't get it. I could have sold it for what I paid for it. Love Evos.

@@TV_Evolution it's absolutely insane. If I would have known that would still be worth that much I would have pushed that manager and forced him to sell it. He was a complete tool though. Basically said "well, you're 21. We don't trust 21 year olds" Nevermind the fact that my credit was a 790, I already had one car note among credit cards that all had on time payments etc.

Funny how my 1999 Camaro Z28/LS1/Automatic did a best of 13.5@106mph. All I did was a muffler delete, cut holes in the bottom of the air intake box, then replaced the top intake lid of the airbox for $30 which had no sort of restrictions or sound silencers like the stock intake box lid. Those two mods literally gave you 10-15 rear wheel horsepower over stock. I have no doubt that the Evo or STI would smoke my Camaro off the line if they were willing to do 6000rpm clutch dumps and risk grenading their whole driveline. In a straight line those rally cars would not win(stock vs stock), but man did they handle and were a lot more fun to drive in the twisties than my Camaro. Also it was way too easy to turn the power up with the STI or EVO, just increase the boost until it blows up in your face.
