When pressing out the old bearing from the steering knuckle, add heat to the narrow part of the knuckle, the heat will make it expand enough that the outer bearing race will slide out easier. Also, if you aren't pressing it out straight then it will require a lot more pressure. I use map gas and PB Blaster to loosen things up. They both work wonders on this kind of work. A 12 point socket is known as a triple-square in some circles.

Just did this job on both sides to an 06 highlander today. Pressing the bearings out is the fun part for sure. Since the old bearing falls apart coming out anyways, I used the od of old bearing to press the new one back in to the spindle. The internal snap ring I sprayed with pb blaster and got a flat screw driver and hammer to tap it all around until it was free. I broke an ear off of one of them, so I had to replace. It’s a tight press out out of the spindle, I would put a block directly underneath for the initial push to ensure everything is square. After she moves, the. You can find a way to cradle the spindle to push the bearing the rest of the way out. One side of the old bearing race stays on the hub, I used a cutoff wheel and dug as deep as I could, then smacked the slit with a dull chisel and it cracked in half, slid right off! Hope that helps

I have a Lexus RX330 (essentially the same car as the highlander) and I already did the rear wheel bearings and was about to do the front until i looked it up and figured it that it's a much more intensive process... I already ordered the wheel bearings a while back and have a friend with a shop who's willing to press in the bearings. I was wondering if it's worth it to go through the process of pressing the bearings out like this or just pull an easy card and order the entire steering knuckle with the bearings already pressed in for $200... decisions decisions...

The Timken bearings were under $50 shipped to me, so if I were comparing $50 to $400 for a pair of complete hubs, I would do the bearings. Also, when you remove the hubs, you are about 80% into replacing the bearing. If yours are not as rusty as mine were, then it should be easier. Good luck with either direction you take.

I was able to remove and replace the FW bearings using just the bearing tool set, no press.but you do need at least an impact gun , electric or air.it can be done

Excellent video, MrFixit. Thank you. Questions: 1) on time mark 5:51, it shows that you used two red plates to support the nuckle on the two black plates. Where did you get the red plates from? My 20-ton press from Harbor Freight did not come with them. 2) How did you get past the press overload issue when removing the bearing from the press? I did not see the details. Thanks again for your help.

They are made by Arcan and purchased from Northern tool. I heated the knuckle with a propane torch and after a couple of attempts it did come free.

If you are just trying to replace the dust shields do you have to remove the hub?
@mrfixit42116 жыл бұрын
If you want to install it as one piece, yes. The hub is larger than the opening of the shield. Removing the hub does destroy the bearing, so you would have to replace. If don't mind bending it some, maybe you can flex it around the hub with a cut. I have not tried this, so don't know for sure if it would work.

What size is that 12 point nut? And where did you purchase the socket fitting for it?
@wookim94796 жыл бұрын
I believe it was 30mm. I bought a set of 12 point impact sockets from Summit racing. You should be able to use a standard 12 point if you have one that size.

Too much trouble on a Toyota. I'll stick to my GMC. Don't need half the tools that were used here.
@condor56355 жыл бұрын
L Hay - yeh and you will spend a lot more than 70 bucks replacing both front bearings like this Toyota job. I know because I own both vehicles (Toyota and Suburban) and have done both vehicle front bearings. Suburban is the entire hub assembly which costs a lot more than these two bearings do. Only tool I saw here that most people would not have in their garage was the hydraulic press. Thanks
