2006-2008 Honda Ridgeline alternator replacement

How to replace an alternator on a 3.5L Ridgeline. This is also the same alternator for the ACURA MDX 2003-2006 3.5L, MDX 2007-2009 3.7L, RL 2005-2008 3.5L, TL 2004-2008 3.2L, TL 2007-2008 3.5L, HONDA ODYSSEY 2005-2007 3.5L, PILOT 2005-2008.

I would consider myself somewhere between a novice and intermediary DIYer and decided to do this on my own. This video was super helpful! Here are a couple things I would add from my experience. My biggest problem is after getting the old alternator out, the new alternator didn't fit the slot on the lower side of the engine block. Reason being was that the bushings on the engine block and the bushings on the new alternator cause to spacing to be too small. A day later I found some videos that showed a trick with a bolt, large socket, nut, and a couple wrenches lets you adjust the bushings. The ridgeline was too hard to do this in the engine blocking fitting, so I used the trick on the new alternator. Made the width 1/8" smaller and it fit! I tried to slide the serpentine belt off only the alternator, but once its loose, its easy for it to fall off other areas. So pay attention to the diagram and put it back on the same way. Lastly, a small helpful thing would have been to take the nut off the electrical lead on the alternator before getting it into place. Not a big deal, but annoying to fit the small space when 5 minutes earlier it would have been super easy to remove. Tools: I have a lot if general basic tools. But I did buy a few more for this project that without it would have likely been impossible. Serpentine belt loosener (harber freight had the best price) Socket extensions Adjustable socket connectiond (allow you to pivot a lot of different angles) The engine bay is tight, and these items let you get to those pesky areas.

My ‘07 alternator burned up, just a few nights ago @280k. It let out a short squeal, high pitched, then battery light on dash, dimmed headlights. Drove it till it quit, which included some violent surges at the end..Smoke pouring out of hood. About 15min total. Female, side of interstate, out of town ,9:30-10:30pm.. (1st 3 tow Co’s said “no”).. pretty scary experience. Next morning, found this video.. was like “ piece of cake” ..was relieved & inspired.. Replaced the original with a shiny reman Denso... and new serpentine belt. Truck is happy again! Thx for the details, tips, and excellent footage.. very helpful.

Easy to follow and very helpful adding each bolt size needed. Did my Ridgeline in an hour and a half. Engine had a high pitch whining noise with acceleration and the voltage while running was only reading in the 12 range so took a gamble that it was the alternator. After swapping it out the noise is gone and voltage is back above 14 while driving. Thanks again for posting this video.

I think I'm gonna tackle this tomorrow on my 2007. Also, I had to replace my front valve cover gasket, because I had oil leaking in that same spot your engine is.. which I believe is what caused my alternator to smoke up and fail, from the oil dropping onto it.. I'd replace that if you haven't, or you're in for another alternator job.. ;) awesome video!

I understand why you're including torque specs, even though every wise mechanic I know (including you) do it by instinct for most fasteners. I love that seat of the pants, practical approach you use. Do you ever find it useful to ask the guys at the parts store to test the old alternator for you?

They usually don't do any weird things, unless the battery voltage gets under 9.5 volts, because then it cannot produce a 5v reference signal, if that answers your question.
