Thnx for going so in depth on your video's .. here's my story.. had the same problem with my 04, has 200,00km on it.. took it to a mechanic and he tried to sell me on a timing belt/water pump before even opening the hood.. I'm ok with tools, and know my way around an engine.. besides this mechanic was a parts buyer n trier, no diagnosis.. except he started at expensive and went to simple ..before shelling out 1000 bucks to find the belt didn't skip, i decided to watch a few video's on the subject.. 1. did a valve job my self, no probs 2. egr cleanout and valve check , all good 3. belt can be checked on an Odessey ..all good!!! it had been done recently tension was perfect!!! top and bottom.. 4. plenum , iac , vacuum leaks, cleaned and checked, 5. plugs replaced.. injectors cleaned, plenum gaskets cleaned, pvc valve checked, sensors checked 5. Finally i diagnosed the coils one by one, found 3 and 5 were bad.. replaced em, and it;s all good now The same mechanic called me two weeks down the road, and threw me a 1000 bucks offer on the van, it needing a timing belt and all !!! , i told him i reshaped the belt into coils and it runs great now.. but now I see the logic , an 04 :Oddessy with low mileage for it's age is a good profit margin for a re sell.. easy 1000 bones, more since he doesn't have to touch the belt ..pilot Odessy are popular and sell fast.. Your video's gave me bullshit armour, and I was able to defend my self from a con artist and saved me tons of cash!!! And i know everything I checked is good , and i'm far more familiar with my drive train.. thanx guys, keep posting em, content is in depth, and logical, and did a valve job 600 bucks for free!!! and yes some exhaust side were too tight, draggin hard on 13 thou, finally learned how to diagnose a coil w multi meter, and 100 bucks in parts later is was good to go.. plus the engine has had a thorough cleaning and going through..maint i won't have to pay for down the road.. hopefully i get another 30,000 care free miles out of her.. iol and coolant change before winter and i'm good to go !!

I did the valve adjustments and T.belt replacement along with three coils on a 2004 Pilot with about 260K miles and as you pointed out and they were snug. The check engine came back on on the way to deliver the car; the same multiple misfires. The owner didn't want me to spent more time because overall, it was riding OK. Now, after 13K miles they need to get an emission and wanted me to fix the MIL too. Misfires can have a several causes. It should be called more as engine "miss" than "misfire". It's multiple and random; some cylinders stay the same and some come and go! I have a generic scanner. I lean more towards that the injectors quit in a fraction of a second. My second and third guess is the EGR or even the PCM. I am afraid to go and put parts in there because this car doesn't have much value anyway.

Thanks for your replies, Mike. A possibility is, that the heater element was failing, throwing P0135, but not frequently enough to MIL. At sensor replacement, the old one may've been discarded roughly - enough to complete the heater element failure? There was no carbon or wet oil on it - Just dry, white stuff. Whatever - that one can be put to bed. Next, I wondered what the white stuff on old sensors is. Is it ash? From zinc & phosphorous? From a bit of oil burn?
@GoTechTraining6 жыл бұрын
That ash is pretty normal. It mostly just happens from the combustion event. Hard to say exactly what it is, besides saying that it's from the exhaust. I think you're probably on the right track with a little bit of oil burning. But again, this is a normal condition on an old sensor. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor

Hi Mike, very informative video. I have the exact same symptoms as your test vehicle only its a4x4 pilot 2008. Everything was running spot on prior to my two week vacation and upon my return, the battery was dead. After charging battery and starting vehicle, the exact symptoms as described in your video? I have diagnosed that it is not the speak plugs or coils and don't want to waste money throwing parts at it. How could the valves go out of adjustment because of a dead battery?? Do these vehicles have a timing learn adjustment on them so it would have electronically compensated for the valves going out of adjustment, and then when battery died the cpu reset to factory defaults? Any thoughts? Vehicle has 360,000 kms. Thanks for any feedback.
@GoTechTraining6 жыл бұрын
Hey Craig B, thanks for watching! The valves are a mechanical adjustment. There is no way a battery issue could cause a valve issue. It's possible that the computer wasn't running the test due to other parameters and then the battery reset everything and the computer ran and failed the test. Either way, the problem was probably always there...the computer just wasn't reporting it. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor

That's strange. My 2003 Pilot had a similar thing happen last week. Ran perfectly until alternator died and killed the battery. Now all I get are misfire codes. I did adjust some loose valves to spec, and replaced leaky valve cover gaskets. EGR ports and galleys were caked with crud. Those all got cleaned. EGR valve cleaned, new NGK plugs and NGK coils. New PCV valve too. Very difficult to check those valves, but I triple checked each. 22mm intake, 30mm on exhaust.

how does the exhaust valves exhausting the cylinders a few degrees earlier cause ignition misfires?? I know it does but I don't get the connection between valve lash and lean misfires??
@GoTechTraining5 жыл бұрын
Hey, so the valve opening early is only half the issue. The valve opens when there's still pressure before the event is complete. Remember though, since our clearance is lower the valve will actually stay open longer too. This allows more exhaust gases to be pulled back in when the intake valve is open. Inert gas entering back into the cylinder causes it to misfire. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor

I suggest to replace the spark plug tube seals if the coils are oil soaked. That's the number one reason for misfire. Putting back the valve covers are a little tricky on these cars; have to make sure the seals go all the way around the tubes otherwise they will be tucked in and get ripped and leak.

Great series, Mike. Just one thing, at one point you seemed to suggest that the intake valves you might want to adjust like the exhaust ones-- a little bit towards the loose end as they will continue to tighten up. That's probably true for the exhaust valves, yes. But the intake ones seem to hold steady over time, perhaps the seat is dropping just as much as the cam lobes and rocker arm tips are wearing down. So maybe adjust the intake valves right down the middle?
@GoTechTraining6 жыл бұрын
Thanks George, i'm glad you've enjoyed this series. These intake valves were right in spec. I believe I was the first person to pull the covers on this motor. 210k and the intake still in spec...yeh I'm not touching them. No reason to. Great video and follow up. Question: your thoughts on using a .0005 increment indicator placed on the cam side of the lifter arm to set the valve adjustment. Select the desired cylinder using the supplied pointer. Run the adjuster down to zero lift arm movement, set the indictor at zero and loosen up the adjuster until the indicator shows the required clearance and lock it down.
@GoTechTraining6 жыл бұрын
Hey Pete, thanks man! I'm having a hard time visualizing your procedure here, but is that easier than the way I did it? I feel like it is pretty easy the way I did it. The hardest part is getting the feeler gauge where it needs to go. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Services Instructor
@davesage91906 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike:I think what he's saying is - use a dial indicator on the rocker arm. I think it's a good idea. The magnetic base can be mounted on the engine, the indicator brought over to the rocker. You adjust for zero lash, zero the dial indicator and then adjust the lash while moving the rocker up and down and watch the dial. I find with a feeler gauge - like you say - it's hard to get it in and there's always that question if the friction is correct or becasue you have the feeler cocked on an angle. With the dial indicator you have to be sure to put the indicator tip on the end of the rocker over the valve not over the cam end because there may be a rocker ratio going on. So indicatiing over the cam would be off by the rocker ratio. It might be tough to get an indicator in place on some engines though. It looked pretty tight on the Honda you were doing. But from my experience (on model engines) it works really well. Also good for valve timing checks when you combine it with a leak down setup . i.e. listen for the valve to open and observe the lash on the dial indicator. See my website at davesage.ca Good video Mike. I like to see how the BIG stuff is done. Keep them coming.

As long as I am driving it is ok but when I stop the smock enters inside the car thru the vents. The Dealer diagnosed the problem and claims that they are getting Code P0300 and also engine has random misfire. They recommend Valve Adjustment with Sparkplugs. I pulled the PCV Valve out and noticed that when I shake it, it won't make any sound. Does this means that the PCV Valve is bad? Does burning oil has to do with the bad PCV Valve. I understand that the exhaust valves need adjustment on these cars but is this gonna stop oil burning. I will appreciate your comments.
@GoTechTraining6 жыл бұрын
Hey Mir, thanks for watching! Sure, oil burning can happen with a bad PCV valve. The valve could be restricted causing the crankcase to build too much pressure. That pressure can then force oil past the rings and into the cylinder. I don't think a valve adjustment is going to fix your oil issue. It may fix a misfire, but I don't see how it will change the fact that you're burning oil. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor

I did find a loose intake manifold bold loose, when I tried to tighten it it was loose so this bolt is suspect snapped when torquing. I have not fully removed yet.

Does the timing belt have to be changed before adjusting the valves, On a high mileage vehicle 250,000+
@GoTechTraining4 жыл бұрын
Hey Frank, that's up to you. The timing belt is a maintenance item that should be changed every 50 to 100K miles depending on the belt manufacturers suggestion. The jobs already part way done when doing the valve adjustment, so it makes sense to do both. Mike Becker, Senior Instructor

Awesome video as usual. I love seeing these because I can learn so much more compared to my old days without a scope. As for the hooking it up to video there may be a couple of options for you. One, which might be the most simple is to use a usb to HDMI adapter that would allow video to be mirrored to a monitor or T.V. The other option is a program called Team Viewer or one similar to it. It should allow you to do a remote screen for viewing on a monitor or T.V. as well. And yes they have the app for Android OS.

Hey Ninja, thanks! I'll look into that usb to hdmi adapter. Remote screen viewing is tricky because of the regulations I have to deal with having an in house IT dept! Thanks for the info. Mike Becker, Senior Technical Services Instructor

Mike, awesome. I have an Acura 3.2 TL and I've noticed some roughness to it running. Nothing major so I left it alone. Last month a did a running compression with my Pico and saved the waveform. I noticed something odd about it but at the time I still didn't full know how to interpret the waveform. Heck, I didn't even know the valve lash being out could affect it that much. Long story short, I just opened the waveform and it looks just like the one in the video before the fix! I know what I'll be doing to my Acura in the coming weeks!

Great series Mike. I wish I had even half of your talent...... and cool tools. I know there was a way you had used some pids on your verus, like engine load, rpm, etc., and a little math to determine if engine was running at full potential. I would have liked to seen that in the before and after on this one. Just to further prove the fix.

Hey Mike, GREAT VIDEO SERIES! I'm learning with my Pico Scope, will get back on that when the Spring/Summer comes back. Anyway, question. Do you need to know the cam profile in degrees to know the difference in when the exhaust valve opened and closed on the engine which gave you the difference that was seen with the scope readout? I guess my question is do you rely strictly on valve adjustment specifications, or had you/did you look at the cam profile parameters to see what the exhaust opening/closing in degrees came out to. Obviously, the adjustments using the feeler gauges proved how far off the specs were, causing the unbalance and slight lack of power in the engine. Just a thought. Honda is the only one I know that has this "mileage" adjustment. I'm pretty certain my 06 Nissan Frontier has the VVT or VCT, and the buckets in the head, so no adjustment there. The 06 Kia Sorento with the timing belt is straight up timing, no VVT or VCT, and I think it has the buckets in the head. I don't remember seeing adjustments for it. I gotta replace the "surge" tank in the Kia, it has a pin hole in it, slightly leaking coolant, and I should have done this last year, but I rolled the dice and lost this year with the ignition coils and spark plug wires, so those are next. I forgot if the upper intake manifold has to come off to do that. SIGH! Oh Well! Oh. "war story." This past year when doing all the work on the Nissan, I replaced the spark plugs and the two ignition coils on the passenger side as the intake manifold sits over them. In theory in case of misfire, hopefully it would be one of the remaining coils. Well one night after leaving home, got a terrible shake from the vehicle when pushing on the gas pedal. MIL light comes on. Quick check, P0301. That's got a new plug and ign coil. Tried something. Ign switch on, push gas pedal to floor, turn ign switch to start. Engine spins like it normally would spin, making me think its not a mechanical problem. I may be wrong, but it worked in this case. Number 1 ignition coil (harness side) connector must not have been fully "locked" on to the ignition coil. It took some effort to get it on, so I checked, no bent pins or dirt/debree, so I pushed it on. It's in a not so forgiving place. It worked, its still holding, runs great, so either I didn't put it on tight enough when reassembling, or it did come off. If it happens again, I'll see if the replacement connector I got for it will be the cure. I hope you have a GREAT CHRISTMAS and NEW YEAR'S. I'll bet your son can't wait for Santa Claus now! How old is he now? Take care Mike
@GoTechTraining6 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike, thanks!!! Generally, the exhaust valve should open within a certain degree window from bottom dead center. If I remember right I mentioned that number in the video. In the scope capture, I was mostly looking at where the waveform went from declining to flat-line to increase in pressure while the piston still traveled down. This tells me that something in the cylinder changed...exhaust valve opened. Ahhh the old Kia "surge tank"...what a name for an intake plenum haha. My son is just over a year and a half now. He still doesn't quite know who Santa is yet...but he knows that he says "ho,ho,ho" :) Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well! Mike Becker, Senior Technical Instructor

Great video series thanks✨just bought this exact same vehicle make year and problem. 2weeks ago the guy sold me on the fact he just changed the timing belt power steering water pump and pressure line. Felt great 1st 324.5 miles got stuck on hwy. Changed the electronic throttle body then the starter. Drove around 20+ miles started to hear slight ticking that turned into louder clacking last night changed the spark plugs and ignition coils all new. Now it sounds like something is loose in the engine so I saw your video series and got a great understanding of what seems to be happening but I’m afraid it is not good. Is it possible the loud clacking which started as the ticking noise in your video is a broken valve? I really appreciate your videos you’re a really great teacher thank you for any input. Ed
