2006 Honda Silverwing fork seal replacement. DIY

Today at JWS we are rebuilding a set of Showa forks. These are OEM for most metric bikes and Harley. There may be slight differences in yours but the procedure and equipment required is the same. These are conventional forks (not inverted). There is special equipment required to do this repair, please to not tackle it if you don't have the tools or ability. I have seen far too many videos showing how to do this using special fixtures which we don't even have. This is the basic way you can do it yourself. I do advise caution as if anything is not done correctly it could lead to loss of control resulting in severe injury and/or death. I show this step by step. Take your time, if you notice I even placed a spring upside down in the video ( I corrected it before fully re-assembling ) but even I after 30+ years, still make ooopsies.

When you disassemble the spring, the coil closer section was at the uuper side so, you finally reassemble the coil upside down. I just dissassemble mine and the closer coil section was at the upper part of the tube. Sorry.

You are very correct! I should have mentioned that there is a reason on this particular bike. Because of the inherent "mushiness" of the forks (you may have noticed) Honda put out a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) to flip the springs and use a heavier weight fork oil to improve handling. Gonna try/do this this weekend. Been leaking for 6 months. Have already added fluid while waiting for new seal to be delivered. The spring seemed fairly soft when putting cap back on.

I saw this comment earlier where you asked if it would be easier to remove the bottom bolt BEFORE removing the spring cap. Quick answer is YES! I always remove that bolt first, it would also help to have an air or electric impact as that bolt has blue loctite on it, it needs to be spun quickly to get it out. The springs are known to be soft, they can also be partially collapsed from doing all of the work while the hydraulic dampening was not working. In the video I explain the recommended fork oil weight to address the "softness" of the Silverwing forks.

I just want to bring my forks the the local shop for seal change and the guy is happy if I take those forks by myself out cause he have a lot of work at the moment. I have seen that those 2 screw clamps are pretty open and there is a lot of room to take them out. Fitting back is pretty straight job but as always without tork specs can be pretty dangerous if not done properly...

Never done fork seals before and looking to do this on my silver wing that I just bought. Thanks very much for a great, informative video. I need to buy a seal driver. Are they all the same or is it a specific size for different bikes?

Forks come in many different diameters. The most common sizes you will find currently are 41 mm and 45 mm. You will need a 41 mm seal driver for your Silverwing.

Thanks for the excellent instructional video. I'm paying a shop to do this right now for my 2006 FCS600A Silverwing. Maybe next time I'll try it myself. Could you show how to remove the forks? P.S I just got the call that my bike is ready now. They said even with 1050k the rebound is too fast and I should change the springs for safety. Do you think they are not familiar with the 600 Silverwing's forks. I had them put in Amsoil's heaver fork oil.

Ok, now what did they say? Change the springs for rebounding too FAST? That doesn't make any sense, springs do get tired over time yes, but that makes the front end sag and the rebound is SLOWER not faster. I suspect they either, A, didn't put in heavier fork oil or B, didn't add the right amount of fork oil or C, failed to bleed the air out properly. Removal is super easy, that bike only has a single pinch bolt on either side, loosen that and the fork slides right out of the tree. Of course you have to remove the wheel and brake assemblies first. You would need a fork seal driver, not that expensive and readily available online.

The oem springs on my wing were to soft for me.i am 130 kg . i put mupo proggressive springs and i left 9 cm space air for each fork. this means abaout 275 ml oil couse the mupo springs are fatter that the oem.i put them the way that you do the thick part down with 20w oil fork.My sw now runs perfect.

That has been the only recurring item I have heard as far as complaints on the Silverwing, the front forks are just too soft from the factory. I'm glad my video helped and thank you for sharing your solutions to this problem. Thanks for watching! and have a great ride!

SW600 is not a race bike and it is pretty comfortable to ride for hours...If choose changing heavier oil I don't want to have a sport bike feeling cause it kills on a long haul trips trough handlebars. I guess everyone that rode from Enduro, Touring and scooters knows that sport bikes are killers on a handlebars for their dampening. 😂

Why did you have to remove the spring when you already had access to the leaking seal?

The cap that holds the spring in is the only place to fill the fork oil, plus, we always remove the springs and damper rods to clean them when rebuilding forks, the bottom of the fork slider collects most of the debris, but quite a bit can hide beneath the damper rod. Thanks for watching!
