NinjaKat the injection makes the bike twitchy, that’s what is said by the owners. Power is increased, but torque is the same. You don’t need 115 hp when you have 111Nm of torque (gearing change) in a VERY flat torque curve

The fact that you've stuck with your 950 SM despite now having spent time on so many newer bikes says a lot I think. Although I'm surprised that you haven't upgraded to the 1290 SDR given that you've repeatedly said how much you like the engine, and even in this review said how much it just offers more of everything except simplicity. I think you're right about the 950 SM sales though, as they are very hard to find here in Oz. I think even the 990 Super Duke outsold them considerably, and overall KTM sales have grown enormously since then. I'm surprised by the current lack of big twin sports bikes (not just race replicas), the power and packaging characteristics are still compelling. It's put the 1290 Super Duke at the top of my list, with little alternative.

@@bruderrudiger9574 Strangely enough 955cc twins are now middleweights, and yes there's still quite a few middleweight sporting twins like the Panigale V2, Super Sport, Hypermotard 950, F 900 R, Dorsoduro 900 and Super Duke 890 r. I've had at least one 1000cc sports twin in the garage since 1997 though, and if I'm buying a new bike I would prefer a modern open class machine in either the naked or sports-sports touring categories. That basically comes down to the 1290 Super Duke or the 1200 Monster.

I was looking for my next bike after owning a thou sports bike for 10 years. I love all of it's flaws/character and its strengths. There really is nothing else like it. I hope you find your bike too.

Awesome review. For those interested in this bike, you should also consider the (2009-2013) 990 SM-T. It has the arguably the same fun factor, has 20ish more horsepower, a better saddle, wind protection, tons of luggage options, and the later models have ABS (that can be turned off). The only drawback is the added complexity of EFI, but for most people this is probably another good thing. This is a very understated bike and it didn’t sell very well in America, but it is a true GEM. One of the best smiles per dollar ratio out there in my opinion. But don’t take my word for it, find one and test ride it. Cheers

Used bikes from dealers demand very high prices if it's half the new price it's usually 7+ years old. Nearly new is no less than a lower spec brand new model. With cars I would just buy a 5 year old car. That's the big depreciation hit gone. Any older and the car just won't last as long. With bikes When you factor in tyres warranty chains MOT's bearing and seals etc. A 3 year old used bike makes very little sence to me.

Brings back good memories, thanks Zack. Had this bike for 4,5 year and 35000km. It has so much BALLS. once rode 1600km straight with it on one trip, I also used it on track. Really versatile bike and great at alpps and mountain twisties. I had pretty much same problems with it as Zack. Valves are not a beginners job, but it can be done DYI, just takes some time. Note that I had to adjust them twice (first time on of the intake valves was closed) so i would say that they must be check every 15000km (which is the interval for this maintenance). I did check them pretty much yearly. I traided it to duke 790, but I still think that this V2 is the best engine and it just sounds so good. Its also more comfy than d790 because leg room and straight riding position. Ill have to disagree some with Zack about torque, you will have to be on the right gear but I think that was great. too low rpm and it will slapp chain allot. Brakes are the best that I have used also. It also power wheelies better than my d790. All and all it is honest bike. No rpm gauge and nothing else than big V2 under you.

Best bike I've ever had! Soon or later i will re-buy it! It seems to be direcly connected with your brain and the feeling is that you can do everything! (up to 200km/h...over that speed is not so stable...but on the road that speeds are useless). The suspensions are AMAZING! Perfect on every surface and completely adjustable to match a track or a bad road. The carbs-powered twin is simply perfect. I would only put on a more comfortable seat. Never compared with the 990 SMT that should bring ABS and a more comfortble seat...but...I'm afraid i could miss that big carbs!!!

Zac reviewed my bike, the 650 versys on the first episode. I guess you fall in love with your first bike, but later I considered the KTM 690 enduro so I could go further off-road...however, the kawi has a proper fuel gauge, more wind protection, better range, was cheaper, and my mechanic didn't want to work on the KTM. The 690 would probably be more fun...My regulator did shit the bed though too.

I looked at both of those. I thought the ktm would get stolen (ktm690 £7,995 at the time) kle650 Kawasaki I thought might be to boring £7k on 0% apr this was in 2014. I ended up with a BMW f800gs

@@chrisredfield3240 A BMW is always a great choice. They have certainly proven they'll go pretty much anywhere. I'd also love the range of the Adventure model. I go back and forth between America and Mexico often on the Kawi. There is a bit in Northern Mexico with few gas stations and I always have to slow down and go easy to make the next fuel stop. I'd love not to have to do that.

You could tell it was Zach bike. He rode completely different on the KTM than I have seen him decide before. Very different and cool.

At 21:30 The fact that is doesn't have any electronics is the best part imo. A pure bike, an engine and a frame. No matter how good the electronics are, without them you are much more connected to the bike. Enjoy it while you still can guys! Within 10 years we're all whirring around on battery operated bikes, full of electrics.

One of my bikes is a silver ST1100 with the front changed to black tupperware. When I lived in Texas, the only place folks didn't pull in front of me on a regular basis was Mansfield, as there was one cop there who rode a BMW with similar colors and wore a HiVis yellow jacket . A few other motorcops in the greater DFW area do wear Textiles. When it is really effing hot they keep the sun off. Riding all day in 100f+ and killer bright sun in a t-shirt is a formula for heat stroke.

I'm definitely late to the game having just come across this and not sure if you'll ever read this comment or not, but just want to say that I'm thrilled you made this video of your own personal bike! I remember reading earlier on somewhere that you own a KTM 950 SM so this was really neat you featured it. You're one of my favorite motorcycle journalists and have loved your commute series. It was great fun to learn from someone who rides so many bikes why this bike is "you" and why you chose it. The amount of time you've owned it says something too. I have a similar bike, a 2010 Hypermotard 1100 EVO SP, and share many of the same reasons for mine on why you like your KTM so much. Don't ever sell it! Hope to see you feature a 1st gen, air-cooled 1100 Hyper on a future episode of Daily Rider.

Hi I've owned my ktm 950 sm for 11 years she's a 2008. Same bits I've changed . Fuel pump. Rectifier. But also starter motor . It's the last of the carburetted ones. Love the raw riding experience. Nothing to hamper the fun. I also own the 1290 superduke r on a 2014 .first gen. That's a great bike also. But I've done nearly 40k on my supermoto. Been to Spain twice on her and to the isle of man TT. It's my daily ride. Cheers !!

Here's a top tip, try to get your hands on a little fly screen. I bought one for the annual holiday ride week. It isn't pretty, but it improves riding above 100 km/h a zillion times. After the holiday I removed it, but had it back on a day later. Most fun bike I owned, even the fuel mileage with mine wasn't too bad. But it isn't perfect. I sold it after 1,5 years because I got fed up with the short gearing, having to shift all the time (I get wrist aches), and i didn't get the confidence for very fast cornering.

Find a good non-dealer mechanic that is happy to work on and knows your KTM LC8 machine and you've tackled the major issue with KTMs (servicing costs) - I got a 'major service' (valve shims etc) and water pump replace, coolant flush (burping these things is a PAIN), new cogs and chain, new clutch master, front tyre fitted + more (parts supplied by me) and it was still way less than KTM's starting price for a major service alone (they once charged me $100 to lower the triple clamps 10mm on the forks!!). Having said that, it's been a pain to find such a mechanic - don't take it to corner moto place - bad experience, was not familiar with KTM machines/quirks after assuring me he was OK with it - ended up with a solo mech who left KTM and set up his own shop - a gem of a find.

This was and is my dream bike since smartphones didn't exist yet and I took hour long poops, because my father and I had motorcycle magazines on a magazine stand next to the toilette. I read articles about it again and again. I might be able to get it this year. Fingers crossed.

I have a 2007 that I got new, it's the best bike ever made, it does everything well, it's simple, no electronics, nothing to go wrong, carburetted beats injection for a home tuner/servicer, when all the other bikes are dead and gone this bike will still be there, if you lose the instrument panel get a GPS speedo, my friends Ducati 999 was written off due to the cost of an instrument nacelle, you can drop this bike without problems, love the bars, mine has a period 690 screen which works well, if you want a bike that's a forever machine this is it, it won the 2002 Dakar which was when the V twin was introduced and this is the road version that the factory made, this is a perfect bike, I think of this bike as a final example of the big carburetted V twins, the Harleys Indians, JAP's, Vincents, the whole lot of them all, it's a rare mix of the best elements of a bike, it weighs 191 sans fuel, 17 liters is 12 kilos so 203 kg fully wet, what other big v twin has that weight along with 100hp and 80 n/m of torque, the answer is none of them and none ot them will ever be a hostage to electrical complications that may arise, like my friends written off Ducati 999, the KTM will continue not only as a bike but as a truely significant bike, it has eight or so inches of suspension travel over all road bikes made, I run it at zero rebound, my bike floats over the terrain, I use the whole limit of the suspension that I paid for, with a custom seat it's as comfortable as most bikes, even more so, I rode a good 200k run with a K1300r, a Ducati Monster 900, a Harley with a little armchair and me, when we pulled up I was the only one who could walk, I was good to go, they looked like they needed medical intervention, there's a lot to be said for 8" of suspension travel on a bike especially when it's set up right, best bike ever.
