Minibikes are amazingly fun. We have several. My kids ride them, my wife, and myself included. I have a really built bike that runs 50+ mph, has hydraulic brakes, suspended front end, rigid rear and just flat out is comfortable to ride. I've ridden it 30-40 miles at a time on the trails, roads, gravel roads, and just out cruising. Its a blast and fun! Also they will improve your skill as a motorcycle rider. It might not seem like it would translate well, but it does! This bike they have built, isn't particularly well built. The jerky take off, poor brakes, vibrations, ect are all solved by being well built.

This makes me appreciate how semi-badass my little 2012, 50cc 4-stroke Honda Metroploitan was. I used it as a commuter bike for almost 2-years while going through physical therapy for a bad back injury, and It maxed out at 29mph on ther flats, and 32mph downhill with a tail wind. After I slapped on a full exhaust system, a fuel mapper (that also disabled the RPM limiter), and a custom racing variator, I was able to get that scooter going to 43mph on the flat roads, and 47mph going down hill. And still got 70mpg (it got 100mpg in stock form). Scared the shit out of a Halrey dude in a hospital parking garage when I fired it up next to him. He was gearing up at his hog when I was approaching my scooter, and he chuckled when I used my alarm remote to deactivate the alarm. But he jumped like a girl when I fired it up! :) That 50cc thumper sounded like a 500cc thumper. :)

Put a Stage 1 on it and do a governor delete on it. You will double the speed of the mini bike. You can go all out and put a cam, flywheel and a billet rod in it and push it over 60 mph! A torque converter is a must on mini bikes that do a lot of hills, twists and turns. I have a Coleman CT200U-EXR and i love it. We ride 20+ miles a day and we have a blast. With my size and weight, I run 55-60 all day long.

Hi you two (not forgetting Eri!) mentally beautiful RevZillians! I’ve seen both the “building of-“, “driving to Aspen with-“, and now also the “commuting with-“ D&D-mini bike episodes! Great stuff, truly great! Top class entertainment. But - I cant stop thinking… -- Could you guys build a minibike, that IS a minibike in the sense: 1. Pull start engine, or… I’m fine with kick or electric… 2. In frame gas tank, for the correct look. 3. Small wheels (max 8-10”), again - for the look. 4. No manual clutch or gears, to keep true to the gas/break only concept. But one that would be great for the trip? Mini-bikes can have suspension, so do that! Minibikes can have 8” or 10” wheels (so much more tires to choose from then!). And I’m sure you can shape a bike that offer much nicer ergonomics! The engine can be soft-mounted in the frame so the vibrations gets tolerable. In short - build a bike that still is a MiniBike, but that also is truly great and actually can make the trip without having to be serviced during the trip, without torturing the driver and passenger, and with an impressive fuel economy. I’d just love to see the episodes going through the thought process, making and testing of such a bike!

Honestly, with a better seat, bigger fuel tank, and a fairly sizable muffler to quiet down the exhaust, the vehicle would be a lot nicer. And some glue could fix that mirror. Especially if you used a suspension for the horns/handles, to reduce the vibrations. And maybe also add a two-speed gearbox, so you can move faster, even if with a 1:1.5 maximum gear ratio. Or bigger wheels, at the very least, to achieve the same result differently. And please add one of those blinker systems for bikes, if you don't add one for motorcycles, at the very least. I wonder how a homemade muffler would work, on this moped.

What I find interesting is I grew up in the same area you're riding this mini bike in and when I was a kid I had a similar mini bike and I would get pulled over about 50% of the time I tried to ride it on the street. After my fourth ticket within a year the judge said one more of these and you won't be driving until you're 21. I notice also a lot of videos with Sur-Rons riding around on city streets unlicensed doing wheelies and carrying on and almost never getting pulled over these days. I guess my point is policing must have changed a lot. With that said I currently live in a small town in Oregon and I get pulled over almost every time I try to ride my Sur-Ron or my off-road only zero even a couple blocks to the store.
