AHC is super easy to maintain and is exceptionally tough. You even have the option to replace rear coils with King coils if you want to seriously build out an LX with all the typical offroad gear (rear swingout bumper, sliders, underbody skids, drawer system, full length roof rack, rooftop tent, etc.). Even if all 4 globes fail (which is really the only potential failure point), you can replace all 4 for less than the cost of a complete conventional suspension. Drain and replace the AHC fluid every 30k (super easy job, 15 minutes tops) and you can run trouble free for a LONG time. Remember, if you do swap to conventional, you MUST replace the torsion bars and coils. Do NOT get the Strutmasters kit which only comes with 4 shocks and the rear coils. They are absolutely brain dead in suggesting that the LX torsion bars can be used as a "conventional" suspension/spring on these rigs. It shows they don't understand the AHC at all. For reference, the LX torsion bars are 26.4mm in diameter. The OEM Toyota LC torsion bars are 28.2mm in diameter. The OME torsion bars are 30mm and the bars from IronMan, ToughDog and Swayaway are 32mm. Each increase in size is an effective increase in load capacity. The AHC torsion bars and coils were engineered to handle 60% of the GVW with the AHC (hydraulic) element supporting 40%. The LX torsion bars and coils are NOT suitable to supporting the weight of even a stock LX on their own. Hope this helps. My 98 LX continues to rock on at 250k and 7800lbs. She's a beast that has been on 3 different continents and easily the most reliable and trouble free vehicle I've ever owned. Wouldn't hesitate to roll out of my driveway in Texas and drive all the way to Barrow Alaska or Ushuaia, Argentina. They are that reliable when properly maintained.

Gary Eanes thanks for that awesome description of the AHC system and its maintenance. I really do wish mine was still operational as it’s truly unique to the vehicle and I’m known to be a sticker on retaining stock features.

Gary Eanes thanks for the info. Interested to know about the king coils. I have a 2002 with AHC, if I add the king coils would that add more lift without affecting the ahc? I really like the way I can select height with the system.

I have 100 series Toyota Land Cruiser and yesterday i went to testdrive this exact car it was in good condition and i have to say it is really comfortable, ride is soft and smooth, car is one the most reliable cars in the world, it is capable 4x4, holds well value, interior is not too old school for me it looks good even inside. For my use it is perfect car. 5/5 i highly recommend. Only downside i would say it is thirsty.

I had one of these back when I used to make real money. At about 100k it started overheating in really hot weather, which is dangerous as hell living in Las Vegas. You don't wanna get stuck by yourself on the 15 at some random spot in the desert. We never could figure out why it was doing it so I had to get rid of it. I still miss it, I loved, loved, loved this vehicle. If I can ever afford to get another one I will, even if it's used.

That’s a bummer about your experience. If you weren’t losing coolant than it most likely was the water pump (routine maintenance but a bigger job) or the thermostat (also routine maintenance but an easier job).

For AHC, as long as you don't have a broken line or a bad pump which can be pricy to repair but is unlikely, most fail due to worn out springs putting too much stress on accumulator gloves which are the counterparts to air bags in an air suspension but the LX470 is hydraulic setup like your brakes so its more robust and long lasting with many examples reaching 200k with no maintenance at all (Toyota reliability at its finest). 4 new gloves cost 1k, new rear springs cost 300, and fluid is 50, adjusting torsion bars is free to put you in OEM spec. I'ts actually cheaper to repair AHC then to tear it out and put a cheap regular suspension, the AHC is a great system with 1" instant lift and active suspension adjustment based on your speed, reducing body roll, keeping you level on turns and braking, lowering height at highway speeds for increased MPG, dial to select your comfort level for american Lincoln towncar bouncy soft suspesion or firm suspension. Great review, but just wanted to talk about AHC as an active member of ih8mud and owner of an LX470.

HuskyNoob thanks so much for delivering that great info. I play with a ton of vehicles and would never profess to being a subject matter expert on any of them. Whenever I get into a new platform I usually head right into the forums to tap into the greater wealth of knowledge present there. As far as being in the shoes of what prospective buyers will experience in their quest to find a solid LX470, I found nearly 75% of the higher mileage ones I looked into as having a failed AHC system (unsure of actual cause) or a traditional Land Cruiser suspension setup installed. Just wanted to throw a brief note about a possible concern out there for potential buyers. Again, I wish mine had the system intact, but the condition and price point of the example I settled on more than made up for it.

That’s a tough one with not too many details to work with but older 4Runners are very solid and priced decently. The LX470 and Land Cruiser are fantastic, but are getting more pricier and are not so good on fuel economy. Highlanders are similar to what you’re getting out of. I’d say shop for 4Runners or Highlanders…drive them both and see which one you prefer. Toyota has very solid reliability across the board. Good luck and let me know what you decide on.

I know this is an old comment but I have an LX and the way my mechanic did the conversion is by replacing the front torsion bars with oem lc100 bars and replacing the rear springs with oem lc100 springs. He left all the ahc components in the car and completely intact except for the shock absorbers, which he also replaced with the oem lc100 ones, and gave me back my 4 fully functional shock absorbers, which I have since kept in storage. I have to note that I think he drained out the ahc fluid so that the system can disable itself without him messing with the wiring, but I am not entirely sure and can ask for you if you’d like.

@joepup8348

In light of your conclusion that the Lexus LX470 equals current value, your favorite descriptor--"stately"--is so appropriate, taking on new meaning. I think "stately," whether it refers to an old mansion or a monument or a luxury car, must exude the idea of being long-lasting and durable; conservative designs help convey this. That's why the LX470 (and LS 400/430) are so "stately"--the conservative yet bold design have a weightiness that you don't see in current Lexus products. The outgoing LX/LC, for instance, is bold but not conservative. The new LX/LC is neither bold nor conservative. So the generations past the mid-2000s are not stately. And don't get me started on the current LS: spaceships can't be stately.
@autoobsessivegarage
@autoobsessivegarage 3 ай бұрын
“Stately” was certainly my top adjective in this review and has been the most fitting word to describe Lexus design from this era. Your well penned words nail this very point. Let’s not limit ourselves to exterior design though, as the accompanying Lexus interiors of this period are equally stately. The materials carry with them an easily perceptible heft from door weight to soft touch material covered surfaces. The leather is supple and smells of actual leather. Lexus will never return to this design language…and it really doesn’t need to. These vintage examples will continue to run reliably and enjoyable for many many years to come.

100 series owner here! Price has def been driven up in the past 2 years on 100 series. It hit a low around 2017 or so. Crazy to see 03-07s now in the same price range as LX570s. The 100 series is quintessential 90s Toyota and I love it. However, it has been the least reliable vehicle I've owned, and also needy. Even finding a sorted 100 series, you will need to put things here and there. My 02 with 170k miles, I have put more than double what I've paid into the car fixing things here and there. Big ones being master cylinder repair, AHC delete, exhaust manifold repair, new steering rack, new CVs. Running 100 series are expensive.

I’m seeing conflicting information on when the engine went up in horsepower and VVT. This video says in 2006 but multiple websites say it happened in 2004 for the 2005 model year. Anyone know the answer? I’m looking at an 05.
@autoobsessivegarage
@autoobsessivegarage 4 жыл бұрын
Alan Calvert I always use the Model Year designation FYI (it’s far easier). In 2003 the LX470 saw a 5 HP bump to 235 (from the previous 230 HP). In 2006 VVT-I was introduced bumping HP to 275 HP. That 2005 would have a non-VVT-I 235 HP engine (which is still fantastic btw).
