2006 Scion xB starter removal how to

If you've got a manual transmission, go in from the bottom!
I've been informed it doesn't work from the bottom if you've got an automatic.

OK, so this is by far the most amazing video I have watched regarding changing a starter. The video was a little over two minutes, and it took about three maybe four minutes for me to remove my starter. Took me about four minutes to put it back. Not counting 20 minutes to go to the auto parts store with the old starter and get the new one and bring it home, this probably took me a half hour maybe 40 minutes. Great job!

This video is for starter removal on Scion XB's with manual transmissions. For Scion XB's with automatic transmissions, you will need to go in from the top side to reach starter's top bolt. Automatic transmission pipes block access from the bottom side.

I found it was easier to come from the top to get to the capped bolt on/off, but definitely easier to get to the other two from the bottom

Is this only for manual use? I have a standard and everything was going well except for the top bolt, had way too many hoses and cables in the way

Not with an Automatic XB. I repeat, NOT with an Automatic. You can’t access that top bolt, too many wires in the way & zero space availability from the bottom. This and many of these XB vids are for manual transmissions. Only a couple of them are auto trans. Wish I would have seen more comments. So, again you absolutely have to go top side. So put on some music, a tv series or audible and do the work. No magical road map for this one.

This is part of the mechanic scam "book rate". Basically they have a magic book that tells them the number of hours. Typically if the mechanic can beat it then they split the difference with the shop. So if it says 2 hours, so $200, and they do it in 30 minutes, then the mechanic pockets his wage + $150/2. Someone else paid $210 + parts to replace the serpentine belts on my '06 recently.
