One tip: DO NOT turn in your old starter (or any other part) for the core charge when you pick up the new part. Wait until a week or more after you've successfully installed and used the replacement. Occasionally the store parts will ALL be junk (or wrong) and they won't have another part option and you will never get your old part back from them. Keeping your old core allows you to return the junk parts and go to a completely different supplier. I've learned that one the hard way a few times.

Starter went out on my truck right after my wife won an auction on some furniture. One catch, we had to pick it up ourselves before 6p. I'd never replaced a starter before in my life. Ran to the store, bought the part, watched a KZbin video like this one (Unfortunately not this one)... and got the starter on around 5:15p. Got there just in time and wife thought I was a hero. It wasn't starting, so I checked the fuses and the battery, but no dice. I watched this video in the hopes it would give me an idea of what was wrong, and I ended up only having to remove the corrosion from the terminal clamps before it started up. when u actually have to fix ur car, u'll know it. Pain in the ass! Especially, rust, corrosion, extra torque at nuts and bolts, complexity of computers, diagnosis the problems, tools, safety first, double gaskets made by ur own mistake, ect. That's y people usually end up buying reliable cars rather than gimmicks and muscles. I've never seen any1 cant wait to FIX their cars lol. Vehicles arent Lego which u cant wait to put them together and then break them apart and build new ones.

As someone said before, auction cars generally have a good chance at being dirty enough for a video, but if you're really wanting some dirt and more ask a farmer for their truck/vehicle. If you know one and can use their truck chances are it will be dirty enough. Though there are some farmers who keep them clean. Will it matter to them if you clean it? No since it'll just get dirty again, but it would work for the video. As a detailer I can assure you that a farm vehicle or an auction vehicle are fairly good candidates for the video.

ChrisFix Hey Chris, I turn the key and my starter does absolutely nothing. I bought a brand new battery, had it tested and put in brand new battery cables. the starter still does nothing. Where exactly do I connect my voltmeter leads on the starter motor to know the power from my ignition switch has energized the starter solenoid and connected the battery power to the starter motor? What should I read if the starter is good? What should I read if the starter is bad?

Mr Obvious you would connect the positive to the lead on the sealinoid that connects to the battery and connect the negative to where you bolt the starter in or anywhere on the base of it. You need to check you relay too cuz it sounds like you aren’t getting power to it.

Great info as usual Chris! When my starter went bad, my car was starting intermittently. When it ultimately failed I was at an auto parts store with a mechanic shop next door. I wanted to fix it myself but it made sense just to pay the mechanic shop to put in the new starter for me. I had jobs to go do so in hindsight I was blessed to be in this situation.

I love how you give us info on how to find the parts. I watched a few other videos and they just go straight to the starter with no context. A regular joe at home will never know where to begin looking. Telling us to find where the oil pan/engine meets up with the transmission is where the starter will crank the fly wheel makes it easy to find the starter. Thanks a million.

An alternative to checking the battery, relays, neutral switch, ignition barrel, fuses or using a hammer is to put the voltmeter directly onto the starter connections. If you get 12V there when you crank it but the starter won't turn, the starter is bad.

I just replaced the starter in my 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan. It took me an hour to figure out how to get a wrench on one of the bolts! I see here on KZbin that most people are taking most of the front end of the van off to get it, but I removed the transmission control module and managed to get it with a socket and an extension. Thanks for all the great content, it is very much appreciated!

This is a very well-made video! It didn't answer the question of where the bolts are on my starter, but I watched it all the way through anyway because it was educational, engaging, and pleasant to watch! I'm working on a VERY rusty old Ford Windstar and all the videos on here are either 1) not for my model year, or 2) are just some guy panning across their engine compartment repeatedly complaining about how his car didn't start and telling you at the end of a 10+ minute video that it was the starter ...no repairs made on the video at all. Thank you!

Moiz, I literally, did an entire preventative maintenance overhaul of my car in quarantine by watching ChrisFix's videos. Installed brand new fog lights, and a rear spoiler. I cleaned and waxed my stock headlights with ChrisFix's toothpaste trick (minus the dental floss). Then I decided to replace the stock headlights with better aftermarket ones. I replaced my worn-out struts and sway bar links. Did a complete tune up, oil change, coolant flush, fuel system cleaning, break cleaning, Mass Air Flow sensor cleaning. Cleaned, compounded and polished, and waxed my car. Did a complete engine bay cleaning. The only thing I could not do by myself was install my new rims, which I had to take to an mechanic shop to do; cost me $20 per tire. Because of ChrisFix's videos, I'm actually planning on going back to school to earn my A.A.S. in automotive technology this coming fall semester, and have already signed up for classes.

Thanks for the video! Just finished replacing my starter today actually which was causing issues. I do not trust taking my car anywhere. Simply because I see how a random person will treat a car and I do not want scratches, or a bolt missing, or trim screws missing. Which I've noticed since I watched the first video and became a do-it-yourselfer. Fixed some hose tears, added screws missing on trim, bought and used a torque wrench for the first time. Going to do more, cheers mate

warning for people doing this on ford trucks. this may apply to some to other vehicles as well. Some starters need a shim stack to be aligned properly, and with ford, the starters are slot drilled for at least one of the bolts on some of the trucks. while I do know how to do the alignment for these, i do not have the correct tools to properly do this and without the alignment tool, I have yet to get the starter to mesh perfectly without grinding. just be aware that this may be the case for some people, and if your starter grinds after installing, you may be forced to have a mechanic do the starter alignment for you. chris, if you have any suggestions on how to deal with this issue avoiding using special tools please let me know. your videos are always entertaining to watch.
