I had the privilege of riding one of these when I visited Japan. I was in a land that I had always dreamed of going, but due to my small grasp of the Japanese language, I was at first overwhelmed. I was in the suburban outskirts of the city, all alone, and I needed to be there at a certain time. I was so anxious and couldn't figure out the metro at first glance, and I had a lot of luggage with me. I said "screw it" and hailed a cab, and then I saw the most beautiful car I had ever seen.The chauffeur(yes, even though they operate as taxi drivers, they presented themselves with a humble prestige) stopped and greeted me and although my destination was far, he agreed to take me without a reluctant or snarky remark. Sporting a tuxedo with white gloves, he basically glided me through the city to my hotel. The journey was around a half an hour, but within that drive, all of my uncertainty and second guessing went away. The price of the trip was expensive, but it was well worth it. Then I bought a shitton of hentai at Akihabara.

Instead of these butt-ugly SUVs and curved plastic pieces of shit, why don't we get more cars that look like that? I mean I'm sticking with old mechanical carburetors but at least I wouldn't be vomiting at the sight of traffic anymore.
@RustOnWheels5 жыл бұрын
Surely you mean the Continental Mk II which has to be one of the best American cars ever built for luxury without being ostentatious. It is though an American form of luxury; all about driving yourself. The Century is anything but a personal luxury car. It is a car befitting a culture where classes and respect are more important than equality, jealousy and competition.

I know that there was a GT86 that was at TAS recently that had a built Century v12 with quad turbos that was supposedly putting down around 1100hp.

There's a guy on r/cars who essentially built his own V12 out of two 1JZs (essentially what this V12 is) and put it in his own home built vintage looking race car. That has at least 2 turbos I think too.

I recently saw a 1987 model of this for sale in my state in Australia for $55,000. It looks absolutely identical to this 2006 model. I just find this totally incredible how faithful they have kept the manufacturing of this car to its original.

NZ allows imports on any cars... Those cars are inspected and have to be FREAKING perfect though... The smallest bit of rust somewhere and it will be denied registration... They can go as far as stripping out the entire thing to check panel gaps which have to be within factory specs. There are no notion of rarity as to what can or can't be imported there though...
@kylesoler41396 жыл бұрын
traxnada yeah we get crappie ass granny cars here. This is nice af compared to what I see on a daily basis.
@jamiepeterson56466 жыл бұрын
That's as long as they can pass crash tests and emissions though, otherwise they have to be imported as a Special Interest Vehicle, and there's a limit of 200 per year, which do have to be collectable and rare.
@Minibull0376 жыл бұрын
traxnada Not so much anymore. Cars must meet emissions and crash standards now, so no more cheap 90s sports cars, or at least its a lot harder now. There is a certain clause regarding rare or desirable cars, something to that effect.
@traxnada6 жыл бұрын
Hum, interesting... I export cars from Japan for a living and only dealt once with NZ, very recently actually... Car was a Cappuccino which you guys had in very limited numbers from new in NZ... Not sure if that original availability made it different than say a R32 GT-R...
@Minibull0376 жыл бұрын
traxnada It may well do, but I'm honestly not too sure. I understand why they enforce this now, our fleet was extremely old and dangerous, still is but great cars are getting cheap here now. It's not all perfect at the border too, my car managed to sneak through a couple years back with no cats or anything, just straight piping with o2 sensors

Felt like I had to comment on it, I just love how understated this car is, just a type of a vehicle somebody who does not need to prove anything to anybody would possess. I would still get a Phantom over one of these, but that’s because of my image-obsessed ego. It partially reminds me of M760Li and Audi A8 W12 though, which both have the engines from their higher-ranked siblings (Rolls-Royce Ghost and Bentley Continental) and are loaded with equipment yet maintain relatively restrained appearances and traditional bodies, both in a way similar to Century (considering the fact that S8 is actually W12’s faster SWB sibling with a V8 while they are only LWB). Actually, would love to see Mr. R’s reviews of both of these cars.

You describing the driving quality of this sounds more and more like a Grand Marquis the farther you go. Floaty, body-roll intensive suspension. Big engine, but with a very low torque peak and only being loud at redline. And slow acceleration because *two tons*. Except, that's not a Marquis. That's a Century. *It's better*
