My '01 F150 w/4.2l engine is manual. 170k miles. To date, I've replaced water pump gasket, had to by-pass heater core due to leaking and rusted pipes (too much work to replace heater core), replaced front seat (broken adjusters), replaced IAC, MAP and various other sensors. New alternator and battery. Spark plugs. Upgraded to a new digital audio player with USB and bluetooth. Muffler welds broke and had to be repaired. .Had to top off manual transmission recently with a little ATF to stop occasional grinding noise when shifting. Currently (Jan 2024) I'm replacing upper intake manifold (vacuum leaks with cracked plastic manifold, probably from over-torquing bolts). I'm still planning on keeping it until motor finally gives up the ghost. Hopefully not anytime soon. Would buy again. The Essex 4.2l engines are well-built and 2008 was last year they were used.

I had an 07, 4.2 V6 4x2 work truck. Was an STX trim, so it had the cool wheels, and body color trim. I used her for my mobile auto repair buisness. Purchased with 134k in 2016, and I had her up until 2021 and put 170k miles on her. Outside of regular maintenance, never left me stranded once. The only "unforeseen" malfunction was a cracked coil pack that caused it to drop 2 cylinders. The next day I picked up a motorcraft replacement coil, and was back in business. She served me faithfully until 2021 when she flooded out with the Florida storms we had. Insurance totaled her out, and I ended up getting a 2017 with the 5.0 which had been nothing but problems! Only has 77k and already on its second transmission.

Nice truck. I really miss my '01 F150. Lost her to a vehicle fire. But right up until the end, she banged like a champ. Very few issues. One kinda major break down but ran great after it was repaired. Freezing cold ac even after nine years. Lots of torque. Thanks for posting.

Please forgive the long comment as I am excited that I have found someone who used to have a truck very similar to mine . I just purchased a 2005 F-150 like this one in Shadow Grey Metallic it is the SFX-XL “Heritage Model” (whatever that means) with extra trim & 18 inch polished alloy wheels and larger tires to make it look like a four-wheel-drive even though it’s not.. . Yours is the most similar one (equipment wise) I’ve seen since I’ve been watching videos on KZbin about it. Mine has an automatic transmission. It also has the 4.2 L V-6 with 230,000 miles on it. The automatic transmission has already been replaced and has nice, fresh, clean, red transmission fluid in it. The private seller told me it was pulled from a low mileage truck in a salvage yard, which I have no reason to doubt, I looked under there at the transmission. it doesn’t look like it’s old at all. There’s usually some aluminum oxide on the casing or something when it’s been used 19 years like the rest of the truck. I am not concerned about the transmission going out as I keep up and perform my own maintenance on my vehicles. I’ll do the partial fluid change every 20,000 miles or so. Somehow, the truck looks immaculate like yours. I did have to buff the headlights to get the yellow film off, but they look much better now and I’m going to spray clear lacquer on them which will hold up for a long time. The paint job on mine looks like it was literally just put on there maybe within the last year or two. I don’t know if it’s original paint or not but it doesn’t even have swirl marks. So yes, it was painted by a really good professional with really good paint or it was garage kept. It has what I believe may be a factory installed form fitted bug deflector on the hood. This has kept rocks from damaging the hood. The interior of mine looks very similar to yours except on the fold down armrest it does have cupholders. Like yours, it has crank windows and no power door locks. Something less to worry about breaking down… I love the fact that even though it’s a regular cab, it has four doors (counting the 2 suicide doors). Actually, I would refer to it as slightly extended cab, like yours. I wouldn’t call the interior zero equipment though. The one you had has a decent radio, although it might not have Bluetooth.. You still had cruise control and air-conditioning. Those are luxury items. I have both on mine as well. The previous owner put a nice touch screen 200 W stereo system with Bluetooth and CD as well as DVD capabilities in the truck. it has a couple of minor issues under the hood, but is 100% drivable and I can fix the minor issues myself. It runs like it has 50,000 miles on it. I did do some cleanup work on it like clean the MAF sensor as well as the throttle body. That really helped the gas mileage and how smooth it ran.

I have an 05 2wd/4.2/manual F150 that had 63k on it when I bought it three years ago. It's a little over 90k now and I absolutely love it. It's not gonna win any races but I took it on a 150 mile round trip yesterday and it was flawless.

Such a shame you can’t really buy a truck like this new today. Manual transmission is not available, crank windows have been done away with pretty much, regular cab short beds are discontinued by everyone but Ford, and not to mention just a plain work truck regular cab today is well over 30k. That was V8 crew cab territory just 5 short years ago. Such sad times we’re living in.

I have a 2007 F150, same config as yours but an STX trim with a couple of options ticked off(fog lights and carpet) with like 65,000 original miles and a rust free Ontario truck thats been undercoated its entire life. I love it, such a great truck and the V6/manual combo is killer fun. I'll keep it forever. Also your truck has a couple options. A/C was optional on the manual transmission and was a fleet delete option on the automatic 4.2L equipped trucks. Your cruise control was also an option. Mine did not have it, but I had it installed at the dealer using some junkyard cruise buttons and an ECU flash.

Imo, these were the last of the real work trucks. You could order them with none of the unnecessary bloat. Equipped to work hard, and that's it. Both the 4.2, and 4.6 were bulletproof. The 5.4 needs some going over before you can rely on it consistently.

I got an 06 4.6 liter with 200,000 miles, they are great and reliable trucks, I got hit in mine a little over a year ago and still runs great, I looked at a 2008 gmc that wasn’t wrecked with less miles and it did not drive as well as mine does so I just fixed mine and I hope to keep for a long time

I'm am about to buy my neighbors 2007 F150 single cab just like this in gold. With an auto. I wish it was manual but can't complain. It had a 150k on it and it as been babies by neighbor since new. Paying only $4k so I am jumping on it. He said he has never has a problem with the V6. At first I was hesitate because I wanted the V8. But after my research I hear very good things about the V6. But i think the one im getting is alittle bit more optioned out. Has leather seats and and power windows and locks.

Just make sure you take care of the IMRC motor bushings and the intake manifold gaskets ahead of time. In fact, at that mileage, Inwoild just get it done already. About the only true Achilles heel of the 4.2.

But I drive a 2wd 07 f150 and have never been stuck living in the northeast where snow and mud are a part of life. You can do anything a 4wd can in a 2wd you just can't be a complete dumbass.
