Back in the days when MotoGP was called "MotoNippon" or "MotoJapan" and Stoner won the title by a combination of the beast Ducati bike, the lovely Bridgestone tyre and his own raw skill. Also props to Capirossi who won this race with a crushing margin.

The crews of Rossi, Melandri, Stoner and Pedrosa completely bottled the race. There was a full 7 laps between Guintoli setting the 1:56 and Rossi's bike swap. In that time the front 5 threw away about 30 seconds to the field by staying out. I think it proves how absorbed Rossi and Stoner were in covering each other, but Pedrosa and Melandri threw away a free win because their crew didn't instruct them in earlier. Also shows how difficult it is for the riders to read the conditions.

Stoner's crew didn't throw away anything though. The race win didn't matter. All they had to do was keep Rossi in sight and nothing more and they did that perfectly Winning over a championship rival sometimes requires something smarter than just winning the race

@@grandmasterj5 I excused him in my comment? And tbh I recant that. Rossi flew past him and was riding into the sunset. And they had all the info from Capirex's laptimes, but stubbornly sat there and didnt act for 5+ laps. The justification is that they didnt want a non-score from a crash but once you got past the cold tyre phase it didnt look that treacherous. So i do understand the Stoner camp's perspective but all the other dogs were completely hung out to dry (literally). Its barmy. 15+ minutes between Guintoli's 1:56 lap and Pedrosa crashing on a completely unsuitable tyre? Ig they were banking on another shower

@@CountFisco you said Stoner's crew completely bottled the race which is wrong though, they had it fully controlled because the race against Rossi was their race. As for Yamaha factory, I think they knew Rossi was having issues with bringing heat into the front tyre, which is probably why they put on a cut slick front instead of full slick. Rossi had issues with getting heat into the front previously too so could be a riding style thing that they recognised as the other Yamaha's were fine. For Rossi to come into the pits instead of staying out to heat the tyre kind of backs that up too. Ducati on Stoners side, all they had to do was blink when Rossi made a move, and they even covered that. By the time Rossi pit, Stoner's slick tyres were up to temperature so he would have caught Rossi, even without him going off and into the pits anyway. Ducati didn't miss something or be stubborn by not pitting Stoner earlier even with Capirossi's data. They were literally covering and reacting to Rossi only and nobody else as that's all they needed to do. Even if Rossi was pulling a gap on the wets, Stoner only had to keep him in eyesight and had the jump on slick tyres temperature, so technically the Ducati team ran a perfect race on both fronts. Team win and the riders championship in one race. Stoner could have finished behind Rossi in a couple of races and still won the championship with ease so it was a clever ride from both Stoner and Ducati there. The other riders, some risked by pitting early and the risk paid off. I remember in the pre race warm ups that the weather report said more rain coming, but it didn't exactly show when so they just rolled the dice and got a lucky window
