Regarding the oil you can use any 229.5 approved synthetic oil whether it be 0W40 or 5W40. Mobil 1 European formula was only recommended by Mercedes because at the time your GL came out both MB and Mobil 1 had a partnership. As long as the oil has a 229.5 approval and you use a fleece filter you can do the 1 year/10k oil change.

if you can get ahold of liqi Molly oil that's even better than mobile one. Liqi Molly is what they use in all the European Mercedes. They only recommend mobile 1 over here simply because liqui moly is not as easy to get.

For a listing of approved engine oils and oil filters, refer to the Factory Approved Service Products pamphlet (USA only) in your vehicle literature portfolio, or contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center." Factory Approved Service Products pamphlet: MB-Approved Synthetic Engine Oil MB Sheet Mobil 1 Formula 0W-40 Mobil 1 SuperSyn European Car Formula 0W-40 Castrol Syntec European Formula 0W-30* Pennzoil European Formula Ultra 5W-30* Quaker State European Formula Ultra 5W-30* ELF Excellium 229.5 5W-30* Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40*1 (Diesel only) Valvoline SynPower MST 5W-30*1 (Diesel only) ELF Solaris LSX 5W-30*1 (Diesel only) FYI, it's not normal for your GL to go through a quart of oil in 1000 miles. My 18-year-old E320 doesn't consume that much oil that quickly. Keep in mind that the GL450 has a 9-quart oil capacity. Your typical Jiffylube is likely unaware of this oil capacity and assumes that it only takes 6-8 quarts like most vehicles. The more likely scenario is that whoever is changing your oil is underfilling your GL, leading to warnings of low oil and the discovery of missing quarts. I will further guess that once you add the missing quarts, the problem goes away...until the next oil change, that is.
@budagen7 жыл бұрын
I agree with your reviews and observations regarding oil usage. I've had various MB's for 15yrs. A lot of online trashing sometimes, but most of them are due to owners not doing proper maintenance.

Sadly he is misunderstood. Oil doesn't just disappear. IF it is not leaking, it is burning. Naturally some oil burns off as the rings coat the cylinder walls a touch, but should be minimal. However the GL has a great undertray catch system and foam, so they hide the fact they are leaking VERY well.

@everycarSeattle7 жыл бұрын
They're expensive to deal with if you get the wrong one, that's for sure. I've taken a few in trade over the years that needed 5-figure reconditioning so we just dumped them at the auction. As a result, their resale value is too low for how nice they are. If you get a buyer's inspection and it checks out, you can really make an amazing buy.
@freddymedina74307 жыл бұрын
are they safe to buy used with milage anywhere from 65K - 80K?
@rezenclowd33 жыл бұрын
Agreed, reliability is VERY hit and miss. Skip the diesel 100% as that is just a terrible package. However, if you have the "truck" (it's not) @ 150k miles, I would say it's ok to keep it, but DO NOT BUY any GL near that amount of miles. Skip the 2007 specifically. For me, 1rst gen GL's are very spartan feature wise. The infotainment like anything 5+ years old is generally useless. 2007 does not have a way to get bluetooth outside of changing the head unit, so that you can get Android Auto or Carplay. These came with early Distronic when added, not Distronic Plus, and the rear video screens are pretty worthless now. As for engines, the 450/550 is quite good, but considered only a 200k engine at best sadly. Suspension is actually very DIY, however many parts already are NA, such as steering rack, and getting a rebuilt unit is nigh impossible. Sadly getting these repaired now, while easy, the parts are hard to come by, or must be ordered from Germany or used scrap yards.

That's a great price. It's the kind of truck that costs $70,000 new and you saved $64,000. Keep it for a couple of years and sell it for $5000 and you just had a $70,000 vehicle for two years for a grand. It seems almost crazy that everyone doesn't look at cars this way.

Here's some Mercedes history/info. Geländewagen is German for "off-road vehicle". Mercedes use the letter "G" in their SUVs to identify them as off-road vehicles. From there, it can take the form of the Geländewagen by having only the letter G, or the letter can be followed with the addition of two letters- LA, LC, LE, or LS. They are all Geländewagens!
