The “built like a tank” phrase used to describe how durable, tough and safe some road vehicles (usually Benzes) are needs to be retired. It doesn’t make sense if you think about it. My neighbours were tank mechanics in the army in the 80s who were taught by two generations of tank mechanics, and they always laughed of how all tanks (current and past) are pretty much coddled by their crews so they won’t let you down by breaking down. They had to be attentive to Oil & filter changes every 150 miles, constant engjne and transmission and alignment maintenance , endless cleaning of its interior and engine bay, and tuneups of its weapons systems. And they were cumbersome to drive and drank fuel as if the liquid was plentiful and was flowing in a stream by the side of the road for the tank crew to scoop litres from. An appropriate term would be “Built Benz Tough” or something else like that.

Try to look at the fuel lines coming from and too the fuel filter, over time they get cooked and have tiny cracks that spray fuel like that. Just put the ignition in on position and don't start the engine and after a few seconds you will see the lines from the tank inflated from the pressure the pump is building. Just repeat on - lock ignition with a 30sec delay in lock position to bulid enough pressure to spot the leak. But don't start the engine and leave it to idle if u got fuel on the exhaust and dpf because if unlucky it decides it needs a regeneration, even in idle it will bring exhaust gas temperature between 250-500°C and in hot days even 800 degrees witch may ignite fuel and oil or even dry grass ! . Lot's of good luck and health I wish u guys from România!

I actually worked at the plant where this was built, and where the new GL, and C classes are built. The way that plant is run is absolutely crazy. You would not believe how poorly it is run, and the amount of problems the cars have before they are even sold to dealers. The reason I got a job there in the first place is because they built 50,000+ cars that couldn't be sold due to the fact they didn't have parts to finish them because they constantly switch suppliers. It happens every single year supposedly.

Bought an 07 GL320 for my wife (at the time) a few years ago. I own a mechanic shop and it immediately needed a transfer case and a pair or arnott front struts. She loved it and it drove great (167k at purchase). She hits me with a divorce not soon after, and wants to keep the Benz I bought her. Fine, whatever. In a years time, she takes it to another euro shop and drops 10 thousand bucks on it! The ac compressor gave out and she got a $4K Estimate and called me up. She was throwing in the towel and wanted to dump it. I gave her 2,500. A $500 compressor kit later and I have a truck for the most part I love driving. Has 250ish K miles on it and needs the engine dropped and resealed, but that’s not hard for me. I want to make it into an overland type rig when I get some spare time. 10/10 would not recommend one for an average person.

Bought a 09 GL320 with 150,000km. I’m a 15 year BMW mechanic. Got it cheap. $4800. Smoking issue. Had the DPF SCR EGR Swirl flaps deleted. All work I did myself. Had to replace the timing chain as it was stretched. Replaced chain and guides. Cam gear teeth were worn slightly from sloppy chain but left them. Injection pump failed replaced that. Replaced 4 injectors. Vacuum pump gear was worn due to worn chain. Replaced that. Installed a catch can because it was burning copious amounts of oil. Replaced the turbo and the crank case vent valve trying to eliminate the oil burning, no luck. Rf air spring blew, replaced that. LR air spring blew, replaced that. Oil filter housing gasket leaked. Replaced that. Rear main seal was leaking. Re and re tranny and replaced that. Transmission slipping on slight declines. Replaced TCC solenoid, gaskets fluid and filter. No luck, needs tranny. Control unit in the rear got water in it now rear lights work mostly, check message on dash. Needs the control unit. Repaired water leak. Replaced thrust arm bushings. Front brakes. Replaced the oil cooler seals and de carboned the valves and intake manifolds. Large job. I’m into it for an additional 6k. As a mechanic who can save money on repairs this SUV has pushed me to the limit all in an attempt to have a large fuel efficient SUV to carry tools and gear. There is more I’ve replaced but can’t remember. And there are other things wrong with it. I’ve owned a lot of cars. But this has got to be the worst vehicle I have ever owned. I will never buy another Mercedes as long as I live. BMW has its share of issues but the GL320 takes the cake.

They are pretty bulletproof cars actually, OM642 is used in all the Sprinter Dodge and Mercedes Vans you see driving around delivering stuff. There are a few problematic areas but timing chains are definitely not common, same applies to transfer case (the fix is new case at around 3-7grand or an $80 Borg chain to fix stretched old ones due to massive torque they output). I have had to rebuild my turbo and did so for $160 as a DIY job. So in other words worst Mercedes for Hoovie, best/easiest one for the Wizard :) I own an ML320 CDI same year as this GL but with regular suspension. It is a true workhorse and continues to work like a fine piece of german engineering! 200K miles later. I will run that car into the ground or 1 million miles whichever comes first!
