So I've watched lots of videos on this and I'm a bit confused on the timing marks we are doing the two phase timing so for the right bask I'm using the triangles but in another video for the left bank the guy used both the l and the r to time it because they were facing up my marks look different so for the left bank I use timing marks for phase one the circles? Or is there something I should know before I put these on?

i'm replacing the timing chain on my 2007 Cadillac STS with a 3.6. The problem is when I took the time and chain cover off the bolt my gear bolt was broken half and my gear pretty much just fell off when I was trying to get into phase 2 timing, what do I do now?

Hello. Because I did not turn the crankshaft to the second point of the oil pump before installing the chain from bank 1. All the installation was done in a single point of the crankshaft. I have seen other videos and they do the installation in two parts, the two points that the oil pump has.

Yeah I watched a few tutorials before I did the job and noticed allot did the 2 stages and the more recent vids did them both in one stage so I think either will be fine as long as you get everything lined up correctly

You used the CLOYES kit right the one for like 700 from rock auto that comes with phasers an everything for the swap an how’s it holding up? I have codes P0019 n P0018 timing codes on 08 CTS. Trying to prepare for the swap.

We put 77k on them I just replaced them again after 3 years about a month ago got the same correlation code after 77k miles the chains looked fine when I re did them looked like they would have been fine another 40-50k the stretch was not visible to the naked eye. There is a recall where they can re flash the ecu to not detect the stretch so early on the 08-10 models I’ve heard

If the engine shut off you probably jumped timing. Being a interference motor you will more then likely be needing a new motor

The only way to know is to remove the Timing cover the bottom chain is what gives you the timing marks. Does the car crank at all?

If the cam retainers don’t sit right the first time what do you have to do to make them sit and hold cams in place?

Put the motor as close in time as you can. With mine my chains were slightly stretched so I had to use a wrench and slightly rotate one cam on each side I believe

My check engine light came on last week on my 09 CTS , code P0008. Just turned 83000 miles, took to dealership and they said needed new timing chain and components and ecm upgrade, they quoted 3550. I’m definitely going to call around because it seems like an extremely high price. I know it’s not cheap to get done but 3550 seems to much

Cost me around $650 in parts and around 20 hours to complete the job it’s high but same as every place I called most local shops said drive it till it breaks and buy a certified motor it would be cheaper then replacing the chains they all told me

@@biddy98gst dealership quoted 14 hours, I don’t doubt it at all that the hours are correct. From what I’ve been reading, dealerships in my area charge around $120 hour. I don’t know where in the heck they are getting 3500, labor would be $1680, parts probably 400-600. Just seems they are taking advantage of people charging high prices like that. Their markup is just insane. I’m going to ask a few local reputable shops.

@@biddy98gst Is the water pump replaced during a timing chain kit replacement on cars or the same water pump reinstalled. From the parts I’ve looked at online, I’ve seen some with water pumps. The only reason I ask is I had my water pump replaced right at summer so it’s still under warranty, I wouldn’t want the dealership to try to charge me for a new water pump. Great video! I thought I had the same issue with my car but looks like it might be a camshaft on the passenger side since the engine is making a knocking noise. I took my valve covers off. If I had to remove a camshaft, would I have to take the chain off? Also an odd question but will my car still start if only the driver's side cams were working. By that I wanted to know if my car will still start if the driver cams were operational and the passenger side cams were not plugged in. I just wanted to see if my car would still make the knock noise if only the driver cams were turning so I can know for sure that the problem is something with the passenger side cams/area. I can't find an answer anywhere so if it was possible than at least I know it's worth a shot to try that diagnosis. Sounds crazy but are those electrical plug connectors on the camshafts actually giving the power to start them? I really don't want to get rid of my Cadillac CTS. Thanks!

It sounds like your chain is prob stretched this will cause your cams to be out of alignment the knock is the engine backfiring because valves are opening and closing at the wrong time. If the cam were to stop moving your pistons would destroy your valves and the motor would stop. Are you getting any check engine codes?

@@biddy98gst The chains are pretty solid at the top. This knock started a while ago, check engine light is on now cuz of vacuum leak probably now. I did loosen the camp caps and when I started the engine it seemed quieter so I though maybe the cam/s might have bad lobes or something. The car wasn't making any kind of backfire noise, it was more at the top of the engine like a banging. So if I had to take out the cam to look at it and maybe check the lifters and springs, can I do that without having to take off the chain? Thanks!

It could deff be a stuck lifter, I had noisy lifter on my wife’s CTS also at one point I did a fresh oil change and added a bit of risonel and they quieted down haven’t heard them since, we also have a purge valve that was on the passenger side head it has 2 connectors to it that mad a loud tapping sound when it went out that I thought were lifters at first so you could check both of those

When installing the harmonic balancer, how do you know when to stop tightening it up?

You would use a torque wrench and use wrenches on the cams to keep them from rotating. There is a special tool they make to do it. I did not have the special tool so I used a impact wrench and just impacted it on. It’s been over 2 years now never had a issue with it since so worked great if you don’t want to get the special tool

I have a 08 g6 gxp 3.6l and mine lasted to 254,000 but I'm getting p0016, p0017, p0018, and p0019 codes. So I'm thinking the bottom chain jumped a tooth or 2 cause now it will start but won't stay running.

I have the stock OEM alternator from my Cadillac. 09 CTS. I installed a Mechman h/o alternator. Works perfectly fine. Someone can have it for free if they are in need of one. I’d rather just pay it forward. I no longer have my CTS so i honestly have no need for it.

It’s honestly a fair price, the dealer quoted me $4600 I believe, my local shop didn’t want to replace them they said I should just get a new motor. It’s been over a year and never had another issue since replacing them.

You can put a long screwdriver into the front driver side cylinder after removing the spark plugs and watch for it to be high up when the cam lock plates line up. Essentially top dead center does not matter much as long as the plates fit the motor is in top dead center. Once you have the cam locks on and chains removed if the crank timing mark is slightly off you can move it to place before installing the chains to eliminate the stretch advancement

Hey, thanks for response back. Yes, I did that with the screwdriver into the first cylinder but the problem I’m having is that my crankshaft dot is not lining up with the other dot the pan but I’m able to put the plates on there so do that got a lineup with the other dot

I got the plates lined up and it was like 1/4 inch from the dot on the crank, I took the chains off with the plates on and rotated the crank to the dot it was like a tooth off. If it’s only a little off you can rotate the crank to position with the chains off it’s free from the heads at that point. You just don’t want to rotate it more then like a few teeth

@@biddy98gst when I rotate the motor to the 5oclock position the cams in the back ain’t flat. When the cam in 1st stage the sprocket looks to be at least the 3 o’clock position… so that a few more than a couple teeth jumped. So how to fix that if possible thanks again for your response

Im getting my timing chains done and when the mechanic sent me a picture I saw that on the driver side there was no oil at all on the rockers.. Why could that be

The driver side head never seems to be the issue the oil burns clean because it has proper ventilation. The passenger side head always has cooked/burnt oil residue all over the lifters and rockers because the ventilation sucks on that side, this burnt oil is what leads to the timing failure, for mine the tensioners were all frozen and no longer moved in and out due to the burnt oil blocking the oil passages on them.

If I were to do it for someone else prob around $500 for labor if they supplied all parts and fluids. A shop would charge way more obviously they are specialty tools needed for the job so any shop doing it would have to buy the tools to do the job

They won’t line up because you have 2 phases one and two timing when you’re taking it 0ff and on phase 2 first then 1 phase reverse to put back on

I ended up trading my 09 CTS. I just couldn’t justify spending $3500-$4000 for all timing chain component repair. Only had 83,000 miles and I took great care of it. I got a new Honda Civic si so I’m glad To not have the worries anymore. I grew up believing Cadillacs were the cars to have but I’ll never buy another one. My advice would be If you start having expensive problems to get out from under it. I would have never thought I’d experience big problems with what I would consider minimal miles.
