2008 Ford Escape Leaking Sunroof - Clearing a Blocked Drain Tube

The sunroof on this 2008 Ford Escape was leaking water during heavy rainfall and while driving in a normal rainstorm. It was found that the drain tubes were blocked with debris and the fix was rather simple. A small piece of wire was used to remove the blockage within the drain tube.
This video is not an outline of all of the possible scenario's that could be causing a leaky sunroof, but rather one specific instance.

Thank you finally a video with clear explanation. I did noticed little wetness on driver seat , now the floor driver seat is soaking wet. With this video in hand I just have to wait for the rain to stop so I can check hopefully I can reach 😅 the sunroof drains. Thanks again.

Excellent solution! Thank you very much - I had the identical problem with my 2009 Escape and this was the first result when searching for the solution. Used weed-whacker plastic wire to clear the blockage it it worked like a charm.

Perfect! Now I know about the drain tubes and where to look for them. Thank you! I saw the water buildup but didn't know if that was normal or not. Now I do. Subscribed and Liked! And I was about to just seal the whole thing up and remove the fuse so it wouldn't work period.

There are also two rear drain holes located at the back corners of the Sunroof track. You need to clean all four of them out if you can.

Eaxctly what I needed. Daughter's Escape would rain some water down on the passenger side after car washes and heavy rains. I was thinking I might be in for a gasket repair or something. Found this video . . . and a clogged drain was indeed the problem. Took only a minute to fix today.

Thank You for mentioning how this worked on her Escape. My husband had an Escape as well and the sunroof is leaking. I was ready for an astronomical repair, but this video may be all I need. He passed away in April and I want to repair it before it's sold. Everything else works just fine.

i am having issues with my sunroof leaking and cannot find my drains to clear them.. my 2008 escape has a sunroof that flips up and slides back on the outside of the roof, it doesn't slide back into the roof like this one.. i have been told by many shops that the drains need to be blown out but upon further inspection i cannot find the drain holes. i am not sure why they used 2 different types of sunroofs on these vehicles unless this one was an early 2008 and has a earlier model sunroof.....we are getting into the rainy season on the westcoast now and with heated leather seats and everything else water can kill i would like to take care of this before i seal it shut for good

Thanks for the video! I tried to do this, but it still appears like its clogged. I was able able to get a wire about foot down the channel, and it didn't seem to help. Any other suggestions? Thanks again!

Maybe a compressor and some rubber hose? Wouldn’t really recommend any type of caustic chemicals to break down a potential blockage but that’s about it beyond that...

Thanks for the information. It works, but only temporarily. The drain line invariably clogs up again and you will have a flooded floorboard in short order. I can't believe that Ford didn't come up with a retrofit for this very poor design. I am going to try and glue some aluminum screen over the hole to see if it helps.

Don't really recommend the screen, i think that might be worse if debris is causing this behavior. Don't really recommend anything caustic, but maybe a mildew remover solution might help clear out the drain tube if its becoming occluded?

@@DavidStumph true, but clearing the screen would be less trouble and time than running a weed eater string down the tube.
