Ford Escape water leak, sunroof, air conditioner, evaporator leak Part 1

This video shows the diag process to get to the bottom of a leak I had in my 2009 Ford Escape XLT with moonroof. I checked the evaporator / a/c drain, sunroof drains, and found it to be rust! 5 years later looks like a 25 year old part! I have the same problem with my 2007 escape.. When I started to repair the rust on the roof, the paint blew off in sheets!! I am lucky enough to have years of body work exp. and the materials cost about $150.00 and 12 hours in total labor (my time). I am very upset with Ford for not honoring this.. but then again I do not need someone who has no idea what they are doing trying to make a half ass repair on my vehicle so I fixed it all myself.. I have a hard time believing that a 2007 in the state of Florida has had so many rust problems.. I will never buy a car with a sunroof/moonroof again.. thanks for sharing..

My wife has a 2009 Escape with the same problem so I'm going to check/clear the drain lines tomorrow. I told her the same thing you said, sun/moon roofs are only good for one thing and that's leaking.

2012 Ford Escape had water saturating the floor. Wasn’t sure where it was coming from. Put a hose to the sunroof and it was pouring in the car. After watching this video, I blew out those 2 drain holes that were obviously clogged and it took care of the problem. Thanks.

Called Ford, no recall on 2012 Escape. But, they documented the problem. If more people call in to document the issue, they will open up a recall case.

I had constant moisture on the drivers side carpet & this video helped tremendously. My sunroof drain was plugged and easily cleared with a wire. If you pour 1/2 a cup of water into the corner of the sunroof channel (when sunroof is open) it should drain immediately and audibly through to the ground. If not, poke a thin wire into the drain hole to see if there is an obstruction. I pulled a small amount of mud and the effect was immediate. THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO! I would not have know about the drain locations without it.

I think I'm having the same problem with my 2012 Escape. The flooding on my driver and passenger was insane. Since the leaking started I'm having electronics issues as well. Speakers pop, steering hands free controls intermittently don't work. You have to hit them for them to do so. And the volume level on the radio drops to zero randomly. Could these issues be fallout from the leak?

How do I access the two drains in the back? I was able to clear the one on the passenger side that was causing water to come into the car. I would like to check the back two as well and prevent the glass and trim for rotting away.

Oddly releived to find it's not only me having trouble with the rust and leaks. I thought it was from transporting my kayak on top of my 2011 Escape and living by the beach but my rust is in the same place. Still terrible but I don't have the ablity to do all of the work described here so if cleaning out the drain holes doesh't work, I guess I'll just seal mine off and be done with it. My 2010 escape was leaking down the passenger side on the inside as well. It happened once I thought I left the sunroof open. It happened today again and I know I didn't leave the sunroof open. I stuck out 5 feet of weed wackiness cord into the drain and then poured water in the drain. Water went down the drain with no clog or water on the inside.

+Becky Moore Could be caused by a few things, mine was the rack, but sunroof, sunroof drains, cracked drain tube, cracked tray, windshield seal leak, etc. Hard to start a recall if no firm place that is common.

You should get a $100 stick welder from harbor freight and practice on scrap metal. Grinding that frame and stick welding some filler welds is easy peasy. Best part of welding is even if you suck and have a huge glob as long as you got decent penetration you can grind it down and make it look like nice and flush

Had the same problem with my 2010 Escape over the summer. I cleared the sunroof drain tubes and that seemed to help for a while. Now I'm starting to notice a mildewy smell again, and the drivers side carpet was damp the other day. Watched all 3 videos, so now I'm wondering if it's a roof rack issue. I love the car otherwise, this is really the only major issue I've had with it so far. I'm really hoping I can get it squared away soon.

Aloha, Thank you for sharing this video. I have a 2010 Ford Escape with retractable sunroof. I found rust on the roof next to the sunroof, it looks pretty bad from the top. So, I opened my sunroof and looked at the tracks and found a lot of corrosion and rust that has eaten away the metal. My hand goes into most of the area where it should seal, I believe. Are you aware of any recalls for this issue with the sunroof? I had no luck finding anything for earlier models, only for later ones. I appreciate your time and again thank you for sharing. Thanks for the kind words... I do not know of any recalls as of yet for the 2009 as I have. The procedure to remove it it quite easy, I'd recommend doing that and cleaning it up a little, and perhaps covering it with sealant. We both live in very tropical humid climates surrounded by salt water... it sure doesnt help.

I have the same issue with my 2011 Mercury Mariner. I'm in the process of repairing it but I after taking the interior apart, I noticed that there was no rear driver side drain hose. Water was draining into the rear driver side since I had the car apparently.

I have a 2006 Ford Escape and had the same moonroof problem with rust. Didn't know until. Y moonroof came off my vehicle while driving!!! Moonroof Hinge rusted and gave out on one side. Need new moonroof w seal and hinges but don't know what the hinges are called that connect the glass to the rails

WOW! Thats just crazy! If I'm not mistaken, I think the hinges are attached to the new glass. Ford parts counter should be able to tell you right away.

If I recall it was just plastic snap ins. However, make sure that the screwed in handles etc are removed before you try that.

Found my water leak problem. I live in a very wooded area..lots of leaves falling. Apparently loads of leaves and twigs were falling in the corner of the windshield and hood areas ( in each corner; driver and passenger) these leaves fell into the hollow area in the door jam...so many leaves that it redirected the rain water and the water entered the passenger side floor. Removed leaves and haven't had a problem

My wife recently bought a used 2009 Ford Escape Limited and discovered leakage after a huge rain. She and her dad has the car tore down now- running tests. So far they have checked the AC line and the 4 drains for the moonroof. The moonroof had some blockage and the right side was barely attached but she suspected something more. Today they went to put the car back together but decided to run the hose over the car for awhile and she discovered leakage into the driverside via an opening that lets in electrical to the car located under the left front fender. It was pouring in when she showed me. Also all the non coated interior metal of the car has surface rust which was only found while tearing it down. It obviously wasn't spotted before the purchase and the lack of miles, the features and awesome price sold it. We are hoping for a recall as well because this is turning into an intense job for her.

Yup I have a 2005, just bought it and noticed after I got it home that the sunroof cover on facing inside is all kinds of stained with multiple colors of water marks. The fabric that should be on the top of the sunroof cover is missing all together, and well the sunroof doesn't not open nor will it sit flush like y should so when it rains I'm sure this car will be nasty wet. Sounds like it might be the sunroof drains... pull up the carpet a little and take a peek during rain or have someone spray the vehicle. You may be able to hear it trickle down, and when you do its time to pull down the interior roof liner and a-pillars.

Shawn, sorry to see all the rust problems you're having. have you contacted anyone at Ford over that? Especially what you found under the roof rack, it seem like they really should be liable for that. I'm having trouble with mine leaking as well. So far, I haven't noticed any rust on mine yet. When I look under the headliner, I can see water trying to seep in on the passenger side front corner. I'm hoping I can maybe realign the moonroof to tighten the seal. I'll find out in the morning. Yes, basically I was told the body was out of warranty. I tried a couple times and got frustrated as it was rainy season in florida. Times like this I just fix it and move but I would hope that if I kept pushing that I could get some answers from the company rather than the dealer.

Recent owner of a 2011, and experiencing intermittent sunroof control. I don't know yet if its switch related or water possibly effecting the motor. You glass frame is crazy bad. My 2011 is from Ohio and is now in Jacksonville, FL. I'm interested in pursuing the internals, so thanks.

+Rod Pyle Best place to start is the switch... take it out and put the harness in and out of it... possible oxidation or maybe hopefully not, motor going.

Turns out, its the switch. had a body tech look at it, and they explain to me that the switch has lost it's internal programming to open and closing ability. If you hold the switch half way in it works fully but I have to manually check to see if its tightly sealed. New switch to come soon.

+Ernst Land Best way to tell is put a bit of water on the corners of the sunroof and see if it starts to drip from the bottom of the vehicle. Front runs down the A-Pillars and then leaves the frame tucking behind the 1/4 panel. Rear runs all the way back to the pathway in between the rear door window and rear window then comes down in between to the area behind the rear wheel. I do have a pic, but dont think i can post on this comment section. If you private email me ill send it your way.

Mom has a 2010 Mariner, Leaked from the start and they said nothing they can do, gave her the run around saying "We cant replicate the conditions in the carwash" well no shit its when it rains for a whole day straight here in Missouri that it leaks, whole roof liner is stained floor is soggy, if we dont go throw a tarp over it when it rains lol. Should be a recall. The drain lines get clogged then the service techs try to blow them out with compressed air then it blows the fittings off and they leak. From the 1st year she bought it brand new. I'm an airplane mechanic and just concerned about the corrosion on the inside of the A arms leading to a reduced safety factor during a rollover situation.

I replicated it by having someone with a hose soak down the top while I was inside with the roof liner removed.

So as a mechanic you will understand, the issue was due to the holes drilled by factory for hardware on the roof rails. They were sloppy and left rough edges after any rust corrosion treatment or paint. It leaves the edge that wants to rust :(

I have a almost ruined vehicle because of the water issues. I keep unclogging the front drain but can't get to the rear ones and shop said they would charge $1500 to clear the rear ones. What is the best way to completely seal up the sunroof? Step by step? From the surface prep to the finish? Anyone done this yet? I can't get another vehicle. This one has black mold growing in the carpet and the leather seat has been ruined. It is a 2010 Ford Escape with less than 150K miles. Good engine and transmission but making me sick when driving due to the mold. I can get it cleaned up and sanitized but useless to do this unless I can stop the leaking. Help!!

Easiest way would be to put a piece of sheet metal in its place and weld it, maybe an alternative would be rivit it with some sealer under it. Might not be the sunroof, can be the roof rails or the windshield too. Body shop can get rid of anything you don't want but u need to find source of issue. U can always run a new tube for rear drain if needed, maybe u have a crack in sunroof itself?

@@prasb2hm sunroof gasket leads to a tray where the draining channels to tubes, it might be a leak anywhere in the tray. The roof rails may be the source of leak. The key is to drop the headliner and have someone soak it down to see the source from the inside. 1500 is very ridiculous.

Rust on 2012 Escape roof - at front of sunroof. This is my wife's truck, and she has it washed and waxed professionally. Today, I decided to give it a good old fashioned hand washing. I immediately found small rust bubbles where the glass meets the front of the roof. (Apparently the people hired to detail her truck never considered to tell her about the rust forming - and I have not spent much time looking her roof). This sunroof has never been opened, and there are no interior leaks. The rust is worse at the roof/sunroof corner, and diminishes going down into the channel. It almost looks as if the rust could be sanded out, without even having to remove the rubber moulding. Also, I noticed that the sunroof rests a little lower in the front, allowing for a very small lake to form every time it rains - bad design, and by my thinking the cause of the rust. Any ideas on how to fix this with minimum hassle? Becky ( whose comment is just before mine ), stated that she was going to call Ford - I will do that as well. Thanks in advance. Actually, this has been a real good truck - we love it !

Agree on good truck... I'm at 207k and looks great for age and mileage, and no major issues. The sunroof height isnt too hard to adjust... if you cant find any tutorials online, hit me up again and I'll see if I can take a pic of the FSM section that shows how.

Shawn Schembri - Thanks for your reply. After researching this, am thinking of trading in the truck before I get more problems. I used to work on cars, including rebuilding '57 Triumph TR3. However, no place to work and leave the sunroof open - I would have to farm this out. My best guess would be about $2k to have this done. Truck needs tires due to dry rot, plus rear bumper needs work after it met up with a wood post. So, all together about $4k. There are a lot of specials going on now - sadly, time to move on. But thanks much.

I have a 2009 Mercury Mariner Hybrid, and water is accumulating on the front passenger carpet! I bought it new, while my state of California has been in a drought with little rain, for several years. I noticed the problem a little last year and have been noticing it a lot this winter; since California is now getting a lot of rain. Last year, I showed the problem to the dealer because the moisture some-how knocked out the heater. My extended warranty compensated me for the heater outage, but I was told that the leak was not covered. To anybody or sshawn09 who see's my reply, let's initiate a recall?

+Cris Vinluan First step would be to see where its coming from. mine was clearly the rack but your glass can be leaking too that may cause that, or something else. Check out www.carcomplaints.com/ I think the idea behind that site is just that, to collect info on common problems, maybe there is a tie in with recalls? I think ultimately, the NHTSA governs that?

I have a 2014 Titanium Escape, my daughter a 2013 Escape. BOTH have roof leaks. She traded hers in. I have mine and now have No Radio Audio, No GPS Audio, No CD Audio etc. I have filed a complaint with Ford and got a lot of Lip Service. They KNOW they have a problem and will not own up to it. I also have a lot of corrosion to the undercarriage and had to replace shocks due to rust. Less than 50k miles on this car. Can't sell it now. Dealer said at 140.00 per hour 1000-1500 to repair leak. Looks like I have to shell out for repair. A long time private mechanic suggested bringing it to a Auto Body Shop. I may try that.

Ouch, my roof leak is back again... Going to spend time this spring finding it and probably just covering with silicone. It's unfortunate

Put me on THAT list with my 2003 Mazda Tribute. 3rd time I noticed water in the passenger side foot well...also the passenger side seat is wet...and the passenger visor. I haven't used the sun roof in years. Would like to fix it right, but dont have the cash. I have a large run yo make (I live if Florida...great place to have this leak...especially summer time) from here in Florida..to NY in Sept. I'm sealing the sunroof window with sealant all around that thing..can't take a chance having water coming in while I'm driving. Transporting musical equipment AND my dog who will be riding shot gun. Anyway..that's my guess in how the water's getting in. Will check back in the next couple of months to look at this more seriously... I hope they do a recall on this vehicle..already had 2. (Sigh)

After having the car 8 years... It just started doing this last month.. I think it was because of a malfunction with the sunroof..I opened it...and it wouldn't really close..motor was burning out..finally thought it closed.. What tells me this is...after a torrential rain..the passenger seat gets wet (of course the puddle in the passenger foot area)

If it was NOT leaking from directly above...the seat would NOT be wet!

Shawn Schembri I agree.... I tried to seal up a leak where it was causing wet A-pillar.... I wet truck this AM and the handle on the pillar was dripping. Upon closer inspection I found water pooling in the passenger front corner of the sunroof and that was causing a drip inside... I guess it's sposed to do that and drip in the tray... but it was so much/fast it wasn't going in the tray. I also found water literally pouring through the rearmost passenger side window this morning too. :(

The a-pillar sounds like the same roof rack issue I had going on... and perhaps the rear window might as well... the tray has I think 4 drains if I remember right. The roof rack has nada bc its not supposed to leak. bummer to hear, I'm curious what you find out.

+Shawn Schembri Actually mine wasn't from the roof rack bolts. The front leak is from the sunroof dripping at just the right angle to miss the tray and go on the sunroof mount thingy... Another leak in the rear passenger cargo area was caused by the passenger side roof piece I call the ditch. A long one-piece thing that runs front to back near the roof rack bar, with 1 on each side (left and right). I got the rear one sealed up... still fighting with front one. It seems to be caused by the rubber piece that goes around the perimeter of the glass not seating fully.

+Jennifer Pitts I wonder how different the 01' is than my 09'? From what I remember, if you have the sunroof in the closed (or close to) position, it would be very difficult to miss the tray. As far as the rubber seal goes, if you glass has the rusted border, this may not be the right thing to do but you can pull it off and put sealant in there. If its rusted, I would advise getting a fine tip on the sealant, leaving the rubber seal on, then jamming sealant in between. I'm a fan of "lifeseal" for boats. So do you have rust in the "ditch"? I was curious how that strip is mounted, does it protrude through the roof? I assumed some sort of adhesive and jamming it in there.

My 2009 Ford Escape has a pool of water sitting in both the driver & passenger side foot rest. I am going to call the manufacturer.

Yep, 2011 Ford Escape XLT with a leaking sunroof. Water all over the passenger AND driver floors every time it rains. It also drips while going through a car wash. The drain holes are obviously plugged, as there was an overflowing "lake" in the channel when I opened the sunroof to see what's going on. I'll start with trying to clear out the drain holes. Thanks.
