The test mode was defined as the bullet vehicle moving at 69.2 km/h to impact the stationary target vehicle at an impact angle of 180º. The purpose of this test was to evaluate the aggressiveness of the bullet vehicle, a 2008 Ford F150, and the vehicle response of the target vehicle, a 2004 Jeep Liberty, in this vehicle-to-vehicle rear impact mode.

Not if you consider that the gas tank (though protected by a tow-hitch) Is in between the rear bumper and transmission. The ford pinto had the same design and it caugh fire notoriously. Same with these. Prior to 04 jeep liberty didnt have a tow-hitch. The resulting deaths brought about a recall to remedy the defective design. Same with the airbag sensors. They have a recall for deploying spontaneously.

@@HR91360 do more research on how many pintos ACTUALLY caught on fire vs other vehicles with the same gas tank locations. Plus Nader and Mother Jones lied about the number of death caused by the gas tank location. They claimed 500/900, the real number was 27. The pinto was the only compat vehicle to face a recall over failing a 35 MPH rear collision test. The same test the every other car in its class failed. 3 million pintos were built and only 27 deaths can be laid at the feet of the gas tank... Not only that the beloved XJ Cherokee ( that the Liberty replaced ) has it's tank in the same location. Your comment of them catching fire notoriously is a crock of shit. The recall for this is simple. Jeep will install a factory trailer hitch for free. Mine is being done in about a week. So stay off my ass until then please. Hell I had a Pinto and a Suzuki Samurai in the past. So I like to live dangerously, lol.

Theres a few other recalls as well. -airbag sensor (deploys randomly) -seatbelt tensioner (locks/doesnt lock) -backrest adjusters (sheer off) -ball joint shield (Allow water/debris) -ball joint (Loss of steering) Drive safe :)

It does not protect the fuel tank.It has been found to make things worse. Pressure Chrysler to fix them right or buy them back.They did neither with this so called recall! It was only done for image and not truth ! Seems the knew about the crumple zone issue in the rear end since a 2006 had the bolt on hatch in the floor eliminated for the fuel pump module access above the fuel tank to beef up the crumple zone that the fuel tank is right in the middle of and is made of plastic. Their own engineer in an interview stated the trailer hitch and the skid plate they offer that covers the fuel tank with a metal shield does not protect the fuel tank in a rear end collision .They moved the tank in front of the axle in the later models of the liberty and the Grand Cherokee TO fix the hazard that they will never admit to .Apparently there was no safety rating for objects crashing into the rear end that were lower then the liberty's rear bumper and the hitch that still leaves half the fuel tank exposed with nothing to protect it from being directly hit from the rear of the vehicle .

Now... I don't know a lot about cars, but I got in a car crash in a hardly used 2003 Jeep Liberty, thought I'd share my experience here. I had a collision on the front drivers side corner of my car (coming towards the left fender, for angle reference) At 35mph, and though it is pretty durable from the direct front or back... It isn't from a sideways collision. The airbag didn't go off, the frame, door, and fender were completely bent inward. So much so, the fender slashed a hole through my tire, then proceeded to just crush the rest of the other components in the way. It stopped about an inch of the metal sheet bending towards my left foot, and I managed to break my back and my wrist in multiple places. The seat belt did a damn good job of keeping me alive. If it didn't hold me back, I would have hit my head much harder or flung through the windshield, depending on how much I tensed. (But i'd likely sever my spinal cord if i was tensed before I'd hit my head in that case anyways.) The compression fracture in my lower back left me temporarily paralyzed from the waist down, luckily this was only from pressure on the spinal cord, not too much damage, and was somewhat reversible after treatment. (Keyword somewhat) Now. If i had been hit 10 degrees more to the right, my airbag would have gone off and I would have never broken my back. So, this car is pretty safe from a rear end or front collision. Elsewhere, not so much.

They do if hit below the rear bumper since the tank hangs below it in a crumple zone with zero protection. They say the trailer hitch actually makes it worse tearing into the tank. The F150 got smashed up because all cars nowadays have front crumple zones to reduce crash force's for their occupants. So in other words it did exactly as it was designed to do. The Jeep would have done the same thing if it had been the one doing the rear ending.

Looks to me like the Ford functioned exactly as engineered...with crumple zones...Guess you don't know what those are, so let me enlighten you before you further make a fool of yourself. ALL modern cars and trucks are designed with the intention to crumple up in the event of a head on collision, why you might ask? To absorb impact and reduce crash stresses on the occupants of the vehicle. The 79 Ford does not have crumple zones, so this translates to much more severe crash force's on the people inside of the it because less impact is absorbed. See that wasn't so hard to understand now was it?
