Jack Sheldon --- an American treasure of pure, unadulterated genius, and so damned funny that you can bust a gut just laughing.

The thrill of my life was when I was a young, college student, from Bowling Green State Univ. in Ohio, going to Shelly's Manne Hole around 1962 on one, November evening to hear Shelly's Quintet. I actually started listening to Jack, when I was in high school around 1959. As luck would have it, when we walked into the club, instead of Conte Condoli, Jack was subbing for him that evening. I remember getting up the nerve to talk to him during the break between sets. One of my favorite albums was Art Pepper + 11. Jack was on that album, which Marty Paich had arranged for Art. I remember I asked Jack how that band ever played so well, as they did on that recording. Jack was very gracious and told me all about the rehearsal for the record, all done at Alvino Rey's house. I'll never forget that night. Jack was always my very favorite trumpet player/vocalist.

I worked in managing Chet Bakers estate for many years working with Carol and Paul Baker. Whenever Ive come across Jack Sheldons work its always struck me what an interesting, cool jazz musical pair he and Chet made. Both with iconic level talent and expressiveness...subtle difference in tone...both very cool personalities. Love this doc film and have watched it many times just to soak in the artistic vibe...cheers

Powerful piece of work. So many musicians deserve to have their stories told and heard.

I'm glad this was made. His story needed to be told. In his own eyes, he was always in the shadow of Chet Baker; to those who listened to his music and knew him personally, I'm guessing far less so.
