The Makita cordless impact driver made removing the AC pulley bolt extremely simple. Here is a link to the driver that I use: amzn.to/2U15H3N
The pulley removal tool that I used was very similar to this one (amzn.to/2ZIgEe1) but is much older so is not available anymore. It is a terrible, and not fun tool to use but it did get the job done.
In this week's DIY video, we are replacing the Air Conditioning Compressor Clutch assembly on a 2008 Nissan Rogue. The AC Clutch is one the cheap ebay clutches which fit very well and looked as good as the factory AC clutch. This process will be very similar for a Nissan Altima, Nissan Mirano or any newer four cylinder Nissan car. The entire process takes about 30 minutes to an hour and can be performed at home with any competent DIY mechanic.

Life saver - thank you!!! Local shop wanted $1300!!! Performed this today. As others have noted, a standard 2-ton, 2/3 jaw puller from Autozone does the trick. Do not bother renting an A/C clutch puller, as they are too large for the space in the Rogue. Hammering the new pulley on is a pain due to the limited space. I also had luck using a large socket to drive it on, but I had to use a block of wood for the last little bit. It requires a lot of muscle when using wood. Just be careful not to damage the bearing. Thanks again!!

Just did this on my car and it worked like a charm. Got mine from R & Y AC Compressors. Good price and it got here in like three days. My only tip would be to make sure your wire is out of the way before you start it. The wire (at least on the one I got) is a bit longer than it needs to be and when I started it the serpentine belt almost chewed through the wire.

Firestone quoted us $2,100 for new everything AC, our symptoms was the AC went from cold to hot instantly in the middle of intersection at the end of last summer, no noise, grinding, nothing. I found you video, followed it, everything was exactly as you said, $47 AC clutch, a few new tools, and we have AC again, thanks for sharing

Thank you so much!!! Man...I was all worried about the pulley thing but it came off so easy I thought I was home free but then I ended up stripping 2 of the 3 screws removing the magnetic actuator. Ugh! Then I had to get screw extractor bits at Home Depot. What a hassle that was!!! I even had to remove the grill and remove the washer fluid reservoir so I could get a straight shot at the far right screw. But it all worked out in the end. AC blowing ice cold! If you want to give me your paypal address I'll gladly "buy you a beer". You saved me loads of dough my man.

Haha, I'm glad it was helpful! I think about all the AC clutches on those rogues eventually crap out and most people end up dropping $1k and replacing the entire compressor. I think most shops will just default to replacing the compressor instead of diagnosing it a level deeper.

Next time try one of these hand impact driver tools on stuck screws. I had seen it mentioned in a car forum once, and ran out to get one while doing this job. It unstuck those screws immediately. I used the "Craftsman hand impact driver, 3/8-Inch Set (CMMT14104)", there are other makes. When you hit it you are driving the bit firmly into the screw while at the same time turning it a bit.

My situation is the Pulley of the A/C compressor Clutch is making loud noises even when my a/c isn't turned on and the clutch is not engaged. When I turn on my A/C compressor it works the clutch engages like it is supposed to and the a/c works and is cold. I just have a bad bearing in the a/c compressor clutch pulley. The shop I took it to quoted me 1600 dollars to change out the a/c compressor which comes as a kit with the Dryer and all the seals. If all I got is a noisy bearing seems like a waste of money to change the whole compressor.

I ended up using 2 of the factory shims and 3 from the kit however from time to time, but not always, when the clutch disengages I can still hear a bit of friction noise. Should I use one more shim or just leave it as is (I have one more shim left)? Thanks again.

Hi thanks for this video! I swapped out the Clutch coil and the AC started blowing cold air again however It is intermittently cold. It blows as cold as it should maybe 25% of the time and the rest of the time its kind of just "cool" air (noticeably cooler air then when the original clutch coil wasn't engaging). I checked the system for leaks before changing out the coil so its not that. Could it be that the air gap I left between the outer clutch plate and the pulley face is too large? I think I used the three washers that came with the new clutch and then one original washer for a total of 4 washers. Any ideas? Thanks
@CoolStuffGuysLike
@CoolStuffGuysLike 4 жыл бұрын
Is it still intermittent if you set it to max AC and blast it? It will kick the clutch on and off as needed to keep the cabin as cool as necessary. So on a super hot day it will blow cold most of the time. And on a less hot day it will spend a lot more time off but still blowing. If the car is as cool as you want after about fifteen or twenty minutes, it is probably normal. If it only stays on for a few seconds at a time it may be over pressurized with r134a.
@AdrianTheDrummer
@AdrianTheDrummer 4 жыл бұрын
Cool Stuff Guys Like Yes! On Max AC. I live in Miami Fl, where it’s 100 degrees Fahrenheit right now. The air blows very cold for some time and then it gets warmer. Blows noticeably warmer most of the time.

If the clutch is not trying to kick on with the ac on blast on a hot day it is probably the clutch. You should hear it click periodically and if you look at the center of that pulley it will spin when it is on. If it is kicking on but not getting cold, it could be a compressor issue or low refrigerant or a leak. If it is clicking like it wants to kick on but it is not spinning the center of the pulley, it could be a seized compressor or may need a shim removed to tighten up the clutch. On these Nissans the clutch is a pretty common thing to fail.

They are pretty notorious for crapping out. Ours did, and a friend with the same model has the same thing happen. If it's not squealing the belt and doesn't seem to be trying to click and engage the compressor, it's probably just the clutch. We had a shop quote us a whole new compressor which would have been around $1000 vs this $45 repair which was all it needed.
