The two bolts on the side of the alternator that hold the wire harness are actually extremely easy to access from inside the wheel well. Just turn the wheel to the left and use a long ratchet extension. Took those off in about 30 seconds.
@mechdjango34905 жыл бұрын
They are easily accessible from the top with the correct wrench, what's difficult was getting a visual to show everyone how to. I'm sure your method will work for most people

Yeah my 4Runner may have been a little different than yours. Not sure what year yours is. Mine is a 2016 and those bolts were extremely difficult to get to. Your method was just fine though. Just offering up an alternative if someone else is having trouble. You also have MUCH better tools than I do. Haha

Just got done with this repair. I have a 2011. I did not need to take the pulley off to access the lower bolt. Also this video doesn’t address the bracket of death on the bottom of the alternator. You have to take off the driver side wheel. You only have to remove the bolt whose head is facing the wheel. You can leave the bracket attached to the alternator and put it on the new one before install. Trying to get that one screwed back with the alternator in place is a giant pain in the arse. Spent over an hour struggling with it before taking the new one back out and simply attaching it pre-install.

First of all thanks for the video. You did a nice job. As others have mention the music was not needed and made it very hard to hear what you were saying. I just removed an alternator from 2010 4 runner v-6. Lucky for you that you don’t own a 2010. It is quit a different procedure. First of all there are two additional brackets on the back. One secured the back side of the alternator. (12mm) and another bracket that holds a wiring harness to the back side of the alternator. Someone said it was a 10mm nut but mine was an 8 mm. (Hard as hell to get to). The two 10 mm bolts that you removed with the racket can be removed more easily by taking the left tire off and going through the wheel well. I tried your method but did not have that nice long 10mm racket. (Didn’t know they made them that long). My biggest problem with this hole job was removing the plastics cap hiding the 10mm nut and getting the electrical connector off.
@brennanjohnstone9493 жыл бұрын
In the process of doing a 2010 as well. The stupid plastic cap covering the 10mm nut was a royal pain for me too. 😂. Of course the 130amp alternator is a special order item even from the stealership so I’m just waiting for the new one to get here to be done.

I decided to have my old alternator rebuild instead of buying a new one. I took it to a guy’s shop who does starters and alternators. Charged me $100. Changed out everything thing except the bearings.
@alimirrasekhian83653 жыл бұрын
How did you access the 12mm in the back? Currently in the process and just ran into this issue. Love almost having it removed to only find that there additional brackets.
@larrymattox24713 жыл бұрын
As I said, go through the wheel well after removing the tire. Once you start the process of reinstalling, put both brackets back on before inserting the alternator. Leave the main alternator bracket loose. The wiring harness can be tightened up then you just snap the wire back in the bracket. Going back in was a piece of cake.

Besides the funky music I gotta share this...my alternator must have put on weight cuz now way, NO HOW did it come out as easy as this shows, even turning it just like this guy did. I dang near took the sawzall to the oil filter housing before pushing all the bundle of wires toward the firewall and busting knuckles and tearing skin to get it out.

You are missing the portion about removing the bolt for the bracket in the back. Your engine does not look like the 2010 4runner 4.0 either. Please confirm what you have as this video is not representative of what actually needs to be done. The tire needs to be removed to access the rear bolt

@@mechdjango3490 Went with Autozone which was $250 with tax and with a core discount. I would recommend to anyone doing this to get a new belt with it. The only thing missing from this tutorial, is removing the unnecessary bolt connected to the block by an L bracket. It is attached to the back of the alternator. It took me a while to realize what was still holding the alternator on there, and took me even longer to get to it.

this is not the same as a 2011 , there is a rear 12 mm bolt ya have to get threw wheel well just replaced mine and it shit the bed after driving threw a big rainstorm , look threw wheel well there is a gap in the rubber shields that allows water to directly hit alternator when driving threw rain filled grooves in road or puddles at high speed , ya know wha I mean , anyways I cut a rubber floor mat and installed it to fill that hole so no water can hit alternator anymore , not directly anyways , no need to remove battery either to replace alternator
