That bourdon + voix céleste combination is the most unexpectedly beautiful organ tone I've heard! It almost sounds like a soft principal.

Thanks for the video! The pneumatics inside the console are a braking system for the self-adjusting action. In the action of each division there is an element that is "floating." This means usually a rail of squares or backfalls that is actually held up by the collective tension of the pallet springs. It allows the total length of the action to self-adjust to seasonal changes in humidity since wood changes dimensions as the humidity changes. Without this self-adjusting system, the organ would be prone to ciphers in one season, and shallow key-travel in another. So why the pneumatics? If the organ had the self-adjusting mechanism but no braking system, the floating rail could fall if the organist played a very large chord or clusters and cause the remaining pallets to also open! At St. Mark's, when the organ is off, the action can adjust itself to any changes in dimensions caused by humidity, but when the organ is turned on, the small bellows you see inside the console inflate and pull on some brakes which lock the bars in place. Now you can play all the contemporary music and massive chords you want without having to worry about all the other keys falling.

There was a sedan made by Citroën, that rode on hydro/pneumatic suspension. Upon shutdown, the car settled; likewise on start-up, the suspension raised.

THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE FOR EXPERIENCE! this organist speaks w/ explanation , clarity, and authority. really a fine teacher and i suspect a wonderfully "atuned" organist and choirmaster. i have seen several of these vids, but this is my favorite. i will drop by for a service my next visit to st. louis. best to him in retirement---the music world will be just a little less bright, due to his well-deserved retirement.

I visited this church on an organ crawl in 2010. Very narrow room and fantastic organ.

We use carbon fiber rods now instead of wood trackers in the organs we've built for the past number of years, the carbon fiber is much better in every way!
