Secretariat was a favorite. Imo, much greater than the 73 Derby win by Secretariat, because MineThatBird on a wet track, at 50@1, came with a much less pedigreed jockey, from at least 10 lengths behind the field at the first turn, and blew the Derby field away by more than 10 lengths. The greatest long shot come from behind win in history.

when i watch this, i get similar goosebumps to Secretariat. What's crazy about this, is that I bet on Mine That Bird, not knowing ANYTHING about him. I walked into a casino (Reno, Nevada) and noticed that the Kentucky Derby was about to start. I picked Mine That Bird due to my dad being an avid gold-miner, and my mama loving birds. I had $20 on me, but only bet $9. That $9 paid me over $400 if I remember right. It was funny, because the guy at the cash window looked amazed when I cashed it in.

Everytime I watch a race I compare it to this mindblowing Calvin B win. This still gives me chills. My husband and I watched this live cheering MTB from the back of the pack. Our house went wild. Great memories.

I would love to see an interview with the announcer so he could explain how and why it took him so long for him to compute what MTB was doing? This remains one of the most inexplicable sports broadcasting blunders I've ever witnessed.

I've seen the interview. Let's see you memorize 20 horses and keep them all in your head and give a running commentary on every one of them for 2 minutes straight. Durkin said that every year he would have anxiety for a week before the race and wouldn't sleep because the task was so nerve-wracking. After this race he quit calling the Derby; he said the pressure was too much. HUGE pressure.

Watch the fucking grand national mate, those commentators have to memorise 40 horses. Simply an honest mistake from the commentator, unfortunately it kinda ruined what was a classic race

JeffRebornNow it’s his job. Biggest moment of the year for him and he butchers it. Study the damn field so this embarrassment never happens again. Larry would have killed it, literally anyone else would have done better. Still makes me mad to this day,.

@@alexo277 Tom Durkin was an all-time great, but be developed serious problems with performance anxiety even before that race. Two years later he stopped calling the Triple Crown (equivalent to giving up the Super Bowl) and retired three years after that, at the relatively young age of 64.

We watched this live and couldn't believe it. They'll probably never show it again, but right after the race the cameras went to the owner's boxes and you could hear someone ask, "Who WAS that?". and another, angry voice could clearly be heard saying, "That !ucking Calvin Borel!!" My husband I laughed until we cried when we heard that.

In a "50 to 1" movie scene, an elegant gentleman during the pre 135th. Kentucky Derby party says "...this year we have horses from France, England, Ireland, Dubai...¡and even from New Mexico!" (laughs) You know who opened that door? Venezuelans Gustavo Avila (jockey) Juan Arias (trainer) and Juan Quintero (groom) when in 1971, they traveled from Caracas to Louisville to win, against all odds, 97th. Kentucky Derby with Canonero II, a horse born in United States and bred in Venezuela. Canonero's owner Pedro Baptista (R.I.P.) couldn't travel due to financial problems. Their performance was very similar to Mine That Bird's one. Regards from a fifty six year-old venezuelan citizen who emigrated to Chile searching a better way of life. Ten years later Mr. Hot Stuff won the Grand National in NJ!! Summer Bird was MTB's half brother...he went on to stud but sadly passed only a few years later...Pioneer of the Nile passed just this year...

It's hard to memorize 20 horses and call them and point out what's going on.....plus, he's a veteran and is one of the best racecallers in horse racing. u people should try it

Just to burst your bubble, Mine That Bird was bred and owned and developed by Canadians. His new American owner was very gracious in acknowledging this on Derby Day. Horses don't have nationalities, really. They don't care what side of the border the pasture is on.

What is very interesting is that, although announcer Tom Durkin blunders the call during the final stage of this race, he comes back two weeks later for the Preakness Stakes and gives perhaps one of the best race-calls of all time. It is a superb race-call filled with genuine excitement and emotion describing the filly Rachel Alexandra's win over the late-charging Mine That Bird.

Actually, I think the owners (Mark Allen and Leonard Blach) reside in Roswell, NM. In a recent news conference, Allen stated that Mine That Bird was a "Kentucky Horse". I don't know if that info is of any help... or just fuel the fire. Kind of hope it just helps... Anyway... Great horse... Great race... Way to go Calvin Borel !!!

The big boy had already taken the lead by three seconds before this buffoon called it. That's what's called lightnin' fast. Makes you wonder if he was even watching the race. MTB needs another race like this. he needs some pace in a race and some horses in a race thats why i think he lost the belmont, the field wasnt small but he did move a little early. And the preakness he had to much trouble comeing into the strecth. I really like PON he was super in this race and in the preakness got bubmed :( i hope he doesnt end up like Brother Derkek the derby fave then barley won a race after. I like Musket man though i hope he wins a couple down the road....maybe the haskel.

No It needs to be made by someone who GETS IN himself, like a Natural does it. One who knows what it is like to view himself when he is In--like the Brazilian driver who won the Indy knows how to. You don't need steroids. All you need is a Knowingness of how to FEEL out all space around you. Borel has that gift and IT guides the horse. I wonder if Borel has figured his Self out? McAvoy-Borel, Crowe or Viggo trainer or owner. Director Mel. A Right Stuff kind of movie-without banal emotion.

mine that bird will be a sucker bet at 3:1 in the preakness....pioneer will be 5:1....and rachel alexander will be 6:5....musket man and friesen fire will both be 7:1.....rain is forecast for balt on saturday...so rachel and frisen and mine that bird may be lower than that....friesen fire will be a GIFT (value bet) at 7:1.
