Both fates were tragic, yes. Barbaro is to this day still my favorite horse of all time. But I am still a fan of the sport. Accidents happen in every single walk of life. You could choke on a peanut while eating, people put their kids in cars despite the high risk of accidents, let your dog out into your yard and it could get bit by a rattlesnake etc. Heck, a horse I was trail riding a few years ago got stung by a bee, bolted and I fell off mere inches from a large rock that could have been the end of me and the horse nearly tripped itself over a log. Luckily we were both okay. But accidents are merely a sad fact of life itself. Is there progress to be made in racing? Of course, but breakdown rates in racehorses have decreased dramatically over the years and we can only hope to keep moving forward.

On first glance I did too, then the past performance came out yesterday and I always handicap the race before committing. Tough to do with the UAE horses as the information is minimal. They awarded him a 106 Beyer Speed Figure for the 18 length victory. Audible's last two were 107, 105 from most recent. They are steadily climbing. Justify also climbing 114,104,100. I have never seen a horse who has put in a higher speed figure after a 114. Maybe Justify will be the first? Audible has the fastest win at 1 1/16th at 149 2/5 which is 1/5 faster (1 length) than Justify's last which earned him a 114 Beyer. Maybe they awarded Justify a higher Beyer because he set the pace and also won? Audible's running style also works out better in a Derby styled pacing. Justify likes to go to the front early. I dont think that will work here. It will be interesting to see if Mike Smith can contain him effectively. All three have what it takes to win, how they adapt to the 20 horse field loaded with talent will be key. There is little room for error and no second chances.

@mkmazzo22535 жыл бұрын
Tom Carey Running fillies against colts is perfectly fine. The reason she broke down was due to poor breeding. If you look back on her papers, they’ve inbred so much to the point it made her joints so crappy they couldn’t hold her back up anymore. She most likely would of lived if she was never a race horse but shit happens. Fillies share the same body structure as males and can be just as fast. You can’t compare humans to horses.
@thomaslloydcarey5 жыл бұрын
@@mkmazzo2253 I am not sure what you are thinking, but in almost all species the female body type is different than the male and usually the male is larger. Secondly the intense inbreeding started after Ruffian. So using this as a reason is just flat wrong. Unless you are one of those who is going to say all thoroughbreds came from only 3 horses. Thirdly this race came about because of all the equal rights crap of that era when you had dumb ass exhibitions like Bobby Riggs playing Billy Jean King. Fourth reason you are in error with your its perfectly fine mentality. Ask yourself why the racing secretary writes separate racing for fillies and mares and stallions. Because over all they are inferior physically. Yes there exceptions, but as a general rule the female of the horse species will be dominated. Sorry if that does not fulfill your narrative of equality.

Unfortunately in 2017 another not-so-great horse won the Derby and was added to the list of one hit wonders, with Orb, Super Saver, Giacomo, Mind that Bird. But, we also has a few really great colts in that stretch, Smarty Jones, Medaglia d'Oro, American Pharoah and California Chrome. Who will win in 2018? I don't live on the West coast, but I think again they have the better quality colts, and with McKinzie out, either Bolt d'Oro or Justify will win the 2018 Ky. Derby! Justify will sit just off the pace and take over turning for home, then it's all a matter if he can hang on in the very long stretch Churchill stretch with little foundation because Bolt d'Oro will be eating up ground on Justify! Completing the super high five will be between Vino Rosso, Audible and Good Magic, not necessary in that order. Overall, this is a really good deep Ky. Derby field for 2018.
