Skinny ties are back in style! Which is good for Lawrence Gowan, since they were in style when this classic song was first a hit. He wore a skinny tie then, and he wears one here in 2009. Maybe he never stopped wearing one.
Fashion aside, Lawrence Gowan, with a small band, created a big sound at the Industry Awards during Canadian Music Week 2009, where the crowd sat stunned and almost silent, blown away, mesmerized by his performance of “Strange Animal.” The psychological and dramatic underpinnings of the song were perfectly realized by Gowan, as he showed that songs from the 1980s can still sound fantastic in 2014. The song’s lyrics are a story you’d want to read, the music a bonus!
Gowan wasn’t behind his usual keyboard, playing guitar on this track, complete with a punky, yet still progressive solo that left the audience looking for the Laser Light Show. Guitar Hero! The wolf howl at the end is a perfect touch that enhanced the lycanthropic theme of the classic track.
Lawrence Gowan has been a star since releasing Strange Animal in 1985. He’s had more than 10 charting singles since, he’s received 12 JUNO nominations, won 2 JUNOS and relieved 3 SO CAN awards. Since 1999 he has been touring and recording with classic rock act Styx, as their lead singer and keyboardist.
