What's the purpose of the module and connection to the battery?

Not sure, but it looks like the connection to the rear lights is to provide the signal to activate, but there is not enough power available so the source has to be a home run to the battry terminal. That would make me think there is a relay(s) involved, the signal has enough power to close the relay and the battery power is the main power. They have been using solid state relays for quite awhile, so no mechanical parts.

@@gregwaters7830 makes good sense since a short in trailer shouldn't affect car lights. My sil's 09 came with lights installed but I don't think they are factory option but rather dealer. We pulled driver side panel and only found connectors. No module. Haven't pulled passenger side panel yet.

the black module converts the vehicle lights to a separate circuit so it wont affect vehicle lighting in case of a short. but also on some vehicles the taillights are not 12v. they are led and run lower voltage. The module will allow the 12v direct from the battery to get to the trailer. it is silly that their is not a factory 12v connection to the rear that can be used. like the cig lighter on the drivers panel he was pulling off. but perhaps the trailer unit draws more than that 12v circuit is rated for idk.
