Nice and a little jealous. I had a 2011 L322 and I was all ready to drop and rebuild my ZF transmission. Found suppliers of all the inner parts. Studied all the information, rebuilt the valve body just incase that was it (it wasn't). Then someone decided to hit my Range Rover by an illegal U-turn. They got towed away and I drove home in off road height and insurance totaled it. Besides it's premium mpg, best vehicle I've ever owned or driven. Plus I've found upgrades for its faulty engine parts. Metal engine coolant intake pipe and metal oil cooler pipe. Metal timing chain tensioner. euro-amp if you're interested. Can't stand the new ones with their horrible seats.

Yeah these things are tanks, it’s a shame how little it takes for insurance to total one of these out. Like you said, once you’ve done the critical things to the engine these are honestly super reliable. Just for whatever reason the transmissions seem to be a weak point. Shame about yours, but maybe you can get into another one soon they’re honestly getting dirt cheap for some of these.

It seems to be somewhat common problem on these. With the right tools I’d say you can do it. I was originally going to replace clutches and seals on my original unit but ended up with a better deal on a used unit. Good luck with it.

@@tindo9833some of the drivetrain components like the transmission have to be programmed to the car in order to work properly. You’ll need a specialized computer that will connect to the car and can code the necessary components. They sell the scan tools online in many places. For the second part of my original comment, look up the website Copart.com. On this website you can buy cars that have been wrecked in an accident for lower prices. It may be cheaper to buy a wrecked vehicle with a good engine and transmission and ship it to your country, then use the parts you need to rebuild the rover you’re looking at purchasing, then selling or scrapping the parts you don’t need. I could be wrong, but it’s something to consider.

To remove the top bell housing bolts, do u remove the cowling to get access from top?

To access the top bellhousing bolts I just angled the rear of the transmission down and lowered it slightly so I had access. The motor mounts flexed enough that I had access to them. Did you have to reprogram the new transmission to the ECU? If you used your old ECU was it easy to remove or does it take quite a bit of teardown of the transmission?
@EtowahValleyRovers Жыл бұрын
So if you reuse your original TCU then no programming is needed. You just have to pull the valve body out of the transmission and transfer the electronics from your original valve body to the new one, or just reuse the entire original valve body. Its pretty simple, you just have to be careful separating the electronics as the plastic of the electronic component can get brittle and break.

It depends on what you do with your valve body. The transmission computer is built into the valve body so if you swap the valve body from your original transmission into your replacement transmission you won't have to do any programming. If you install a replacement transmission without swapping your valve body over you will have to have it programmed to your vehicle for it to work properly.

Hi Ross, I own a 2011 Range Rover TDV8, and unfortunately the gearbox is bad. Apparently, the coolant was mixing with the transmission fluids, and at some point, the can stopped running. I was not understanding why the coolant was ending so fast, but it was very late, when I found the issue. My question is... how bad this can be, and if it can be repaired. Thanks
@EtowahValleyRovers8 ай бұрын
Hey I’m not really familiar with that engine as we didn’t get the diesel models in the US, but it sounds like transmission fluid got into your cooling system and might’ve damaged your engine. If that’s the case your engine might be irreparable and your transmission may be damaged too. Good luck with diagnosing it.

How many miles on the tranny before failure? Reason for failure? I have a 2010 Range Rover 5.0 with 200000 miles, currently the ZF is running great. Thank you for an outstanding video!!
@EtowahValleyRovers Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Mine suffered from a failed stator bushing, resulting in low pressure in the transmission as the fluid heated up and thinned out. This vehicle was actually quoted for a transmission replacement as far back as 76k miles, and the previous owner changed the fluid and filter then got another 50k out of it before it finally wouldn’t stop going into limp mode. I think this one was unfortunately just an outlier and failed early.
@Rottweiler-Lover Жыл бұрын
Some advice..... Be sure to change your transmission oil every 35,000 miles and also replace ALL of the seals inside the transmission. Seal failure is one cause of transmission failure. Don't wait for signs to show before servicing it. Another cause of failure is fluid & overheating. Keep an eye on the oil cooler. If you do the proper maintenance you'll be fine.

Did you jack up the car or set the suspension to off-road to give space? I thought i saw jack stands only towards the end of your video. Do you have follow-on videos during the mount with torque converter and how you filled the 11qt fluid? I have 04 Range Rover L322 with transmission slipping on 1st gear and it kicks hard and just slips from there. I get P0730 and P0731 codes. I might have to tackle it the way you did. Do you know how different the steps are? Didnt realize how much 2011 look the sane as 2004. Mine has the 5HP24.
@EtowahValleyRovers Жыл бұрын
So mine has a 2.5 inch lift so I just set it to offroad height for the majority of the time. The only time I had to raise the vehicle by jack was when I was moving the transmission out from under the car. I ended up not using all of that fluid but don't remember exactly how many quarts I used. I unfortunately don't have any follow up videos as it was honestly a big pain to set up and record steps and that's kind of why the video ends quickly. As for the torque converter it just slides off of the transmission, no bolts or connections. As for reseating it you just rotate it until you find the groove and it will slide right in. It's hard to explain but it kind of makes a distinct noise when done correctly so you will know when it's properly seated. There's a number of other youtube videos describing torque converter install as its basically the same for all transmissions. As for adding the fluid to the transmission I bought a hand pump to pump the fluid back into the fill plug on the side of the transmission. You should download the workshop manual for your specific car as it will have the step by step instructions for your model year with pictures and diagrams to help guide you. Yeah 2002-2012 all share the same body, just have different fit and finishes. They look really similar but are very different. Good luck with yours.

Great job Josh!! I was a bit taken aback when I initially saw that you're doing this job in your garage with no lift. But then I was in SHOCK @&*#%$ when I saw that you weren't using jack stands and had the RR up in the air by putting the air suspension in the highest raised position. Oh, wait, o heard you just mention the word, "Safety Measure," when explaining installing the Transmission. A bit late bro.... Are you NUTS !!! To crawl under a RR trusting its air suspension??? One of the least reliable systems of the vehicle!! You know how when after running the engine and then you press the Down button and it lowers itself to "Entry" Mode? Well, I don't trust any part of the system. One simple switch & air valve lies between you and a pancake. And another thing.... NO JACK STANDS????

Yeah good point I should've used them but can't do anything about it now. Just saying with the battery disconnected the air suspension system cannot release air from the system unless I went and poked a hole in one of the airbags.
