2010-2015 Prius water pump fix code P261b

P261B is typically set because of electrical (CP-B circuit) issues but can be caused by mechanical issues, such as a mechanically stuck impeller on the electrically driven coolant pump.

I have the P261B code, but the pump sounds like it working. I hear it running. I feel it vibrate a little because it's running. Could be be starting to go out? My son's car acts up when it's hit and humid out usually. But driving home last night, he got the warning to stop somewhere safe because of the EV water pump code. When I search for that specific code, everyone is just replacing the pump.

My check engine light came on. The code was for coolant pump B. The check engine light went off. Then came back on, and off again. I have ~101,000 miles on it (2015). I hope it’s just a loose connection, but I’m taking it in to get it fixed tomorrow since I don’t have any tools with me, I’m out of town, and have to get back home. I hate that I might have to pay double the price. I had new tires put on it earlier this week. Could that have caused this code to show up periodically? The high temp light never came on and the triangle never came on either, only three check engine light.

Thank you for your comment. It's terrible to have trouble out of town. Ive been there and feel your pain. To answer your question No the new tires would not have anything to do with causing a water pump code nor water pump failure. Sometime when the engine is cold check to see if the coolant is full.

Hi! I have the same problem with my Prius 2014. Fault code P261B. My car have done so far 210.000 miles. I change the water pump brand new and The thermostat but stil have The same problem. I don’t understand why? Something solution for expert will be great. Thanks!!!

I subcribed but you never answered my question. I was having over heating issues and everyone said it was the water pump. I ordered one and changed it but I was also having a headgastket leak so I added bluedevial and ran the engine for about 40 mins in service mode. The shaking went away and it seemed like everything was good. I drove it for about miles then I noticed the car was moving slow and looked at the dash and the whole car shut off. I thought it was because I was low on gas so I crawled and just made it. I filled up and began to drive it all seemed normal and died again and would not start. So I towed it home. I seen a video that said it might not be charging and to disconnect that white wire in the fuse box. I did that and left it for about 2 hours. I plugged it back and bamm, it started up again. I drove it again for 2 miles and died. I got my code reader after limping home and got that P261b code. Do you think that its the waterpump shorting out the whole electrical system? Is that possible? Well today I will put the old pump back and see if that code goes away. I will send them pump back and look for the brand you recommended. This one was ordered from Rock Auto.

Ive never used one from Rock Auto so I dont know the quality. I do know from experience that if the coolant runs low even once it can kill the water pump. Also wrong coolant can.
