2010-2015 Toyota Prius PCV valve remove and install

This is a 2012 Toyota Prius. We are replacing the PCV valve due to maintenance wise. You want to replace this either when its bad or when its time. We replaced this at 102k miles so that it won't go bad later on. Some last for along time but we rather change it since its a cheap part.

So you CAN replace PCV valve from top. All you have to do is remove five 10 mm airbox nuts, remove airbox. PCV valve is right under 2nd from right intake manifold plenum chamber. You need 22 mm or 7/8 inches deep socket 3/4 inch drive. It helps to disconnect throdle body wire connection and hose and bracket of the sensor at 2 o'clock position of the throdle body. The hardest part is to keep the 22 mm socket on the pcv valve since the pcv valve has a thin lips for the socket and a long neck.

Also, is it possible to clean the original valve and put it back on? Why bother buying new one?

@@timirusmanable I guess you could, if the valve mechanism works properly. But since it is hard to get to, and it is not that expensive ( around $7 from dealer (2023)), you might as well replace it.

Permatex 59235 High Temperature Thread Sealant. It does the same job as a teflon tape except it is in a paste form and can withstand high temperatures. Don't use teflon tape. Every time you install any fluid plug (besides motor oil plug), use a Permatex® High Temperature Thread Sealant on its threads. Any fluid plug such as transmission fluid plug, differential, transfer case, etc. Also, use that sealant on any suspension or brake component (except the brake bleeder screws) to ensure that vibration will not loosen the steering & suspension components. So it does two jobs. It seals the threads and it keeps the nuts and bolts from turning easy. That is why it was difficult to unscrew the PVC. It has resistance to unscrew anything until the last threads. It is different than a Loctite. A Loctite dries solid and becomes like plastic whereas this Permatex 59235 doesn't completely dry; it does harden, but, you can always remove it from the threads with your nail. It always remains a hard paste. It is a must to use it on steering and suspension components for your safety. Now you owe me $10.

yeah no kidding. i literally used their video to clean my intake manifold and install the oil catch can. I should've also cleaned the ERG and swapped the PCV valve. I know what im doing now though, so i feel like i could do it in about an hour, maybe less.

@@johnnyjohnson2569 yeah I watched all 4 videos and did all those at once: intake cleaning, swap PCV valve, install OCC and clean EGR pipe - very solid chunks of carbon so EGR cooler next... not looking for that one :(

I cleaned intake manifold soaked it in a degreaser and put water hose in the side hole and watered my plants from four holes water came out from . So, I wanted to know if I can use RTV gasket maker ( sealant ) around intake gasket as an add on or do I have to buy new gasket or can I reuse the same old one? Thank you.

@@alaind831 I put the EGR cooler in a gallon bucket and used an entire bottle of purple power degreaser at walmart. Next day I used a pressure washer and all the gunk immediately washed out on first blast. It's perfectly clean now.

It's the same engine (2ZR-FXE) as the 4th Generation (2016-2018, maybe newer) Prius 2/3/4 models. Same access as 3rd generation? I don't like touching HV orange lines but pulling the intake manifold/throttle body seems like too much extra work for my preventative maintenance choice to replace the PCV at 30k. Before someone is compelled to embarrass themselves, I did have a failed PCV valve and a subsequent blown head gasket on a 2012 Prius V3, a $6.70 part caused it. BTW, it was $6.70 at a TOYOTA DEALERSHIP in San Diego along the 94 freeway in January, 2021. I just bought one for my 2018.

Is the PCV easier to reach during the removal of the intake manifold? I'm going to follow your vid on the intake manifold cleaning and was curious if would be a better time to do the PCV during that maintenance job. If this part was bad would it cause oil consumption? My 2010 uses oil no leak to be found.

it can cause rough idle and engine oil leaks... I would try to replace it and see if it fixes the issue or not. I've read on PriusChat that other's has burning oil issues as well and that it was an engine issue. I would definitely get it checked out at the dealership if its burning a lot of oil in a day.

Yes. Failure to regularly change oil and filter is cause #1. Cause #2 is neglecting the PCV valve. It relieves pressure in the crankcase, removes blow-by gasses, unspent fuel fumes and water vapor, all of which are poison to oil, parts that need lubrication, seals and gaskets. Why manufacturers seem to footnote the existence of the PCV is perplexing. Perhaps it has something to do with their hope that we will only want to keep our cars long enough to pay for them ? Perhaps ;-)

We have a 2012 Prius V that is burning a quart of oil every 500 miles in city driving and on a highway trip burns a quart every 300 miles. Has anyone changed the PCV valve and had any improvement on oil consumption. Vehicle only has 70,000 miles on it. Wife just went on 900 mile highway trip and I had to add 3 quarts. And there are no leaks at all. Wonder how much the dealer would charge to change the PCV. I'm really not capable of doing this. Thanks

Found that the electric cable was not that much in the way so I left it in place. Anything to avoid staying away from a Toyota electric plug!

You can also do the intake manifold cleaning and have an easier access to the PCV from the top as well.

Thanks for the link! However, that's for an older generation Prius... In my 2012 Prius v, probably similar to other 3rd-generation Prii, the PCV is in a completely different spot. I actually replaced my spark plugs a few weeks ago, and the PCV is definitely NOT reach-able from above, even with the wiper assembly removed. And it's a huge pain reaching from underneath.

you're supposed to disconnect the 12v battery in the back and the hyrbrid battery before touching any orange lines

@@NutzAboutBolts You disconnected the high voltage line. There are procedures to follow before doing that for safety. That voltage is something you don't want to ignore or assume it's safe. Don't assume. Disconnect the 12v battery, the high voltage disconnect and use electrician's gloves. Seriously a shock from that line can kill. I've had to watch the safety videos on hybrid maintenance and I'm glad I did.

In Uk the dealer didn’t not know what pcv was and then one of his colleague said £200 I was like are you ok ? Then he said £100. I looked most places but no one seems to have it . Where can I get PCV VALVE for Prius 2012 ? And plus the dealer did not know what a inverted coolant drain plug (bolt) was. For sec I was thinking if there is something wrong with me, I am watching the wrong videos. Just t make sure is this video for Toyota Prius ? Lol

No it won’t. Oil burning is due to worn piston rings.

Ditto to previous reply- its tread tape - same stuff used on plumbing fittings. Utterly unnecessary. Just turn the PCV in straight. The threads will seal the valve base just fine, as soon as it starts to feel snug. Do not over-tighten! PCV is steel, while the engine is aluminum alloy. If the treads are distorted from over-tightening, then thread tape WILL be necessary ;-)

In hindsight after breaking it loose do you think a ratcheting Gearwrench, either regular length or short length, would have worked better? Just asking because I have no clue myself. Of course, maybe not everyone has a 22mm size.
