I knew the info about putting a 27 as opposed to a 24. I learned that with my Tacoma. What I DIDN'T know was the auto shut off. The day will come when I have to change the battery in my new 4runner,and I can tell you for a fact I would be panicking when it shuts off. Hopefully this video will pop up in my in that day. Got just prior to COVID, They are both awesome vehicles. I replaced due to both having Lexus stickers on them. GX battery was replaced during the 2 year CPO but I don’t trust it.

The 12.5" Group 27F battery on Costco works in the GX 460 as well. To look it up on their site, instead of putting in 201X Lexus GX 460 (which will recommend a Group 24F), put in 2005 Toyota 4Runner (V8 option in the last dropdown) and it recommends a Group 27F that will fit the GX 460. The larger Group 27F battery is also cheaper than Group 24F ($93 vs. $99). edit: The costco 27f is a bit too short, my positive battery terminal popped off today randomly.

Thanks for the awesome video! I will try this when my 2017 GX needs a new battery. I disconnected my battery yesterday. When I reconnected the battery and started the car, the screen suddenly went black and the engine shut off. It really scared me. Now I know it is normal. What a stupid design!

Just installed the 27F from Costco this morning. Fits perfectly as you said. Instead of using one of those memory saver things I used my wall plug in trickle charger and connected to the terminals before taking out the battery. Was easier/cheaper than having to buy the memory saver + a portable power source to plug it in to. Worked just fine

The group size 27 is for Lexus with cold weather packet(on the LX,LS,GX) or you live in cold climate area.The weight of 27 is 7 pounds heavier than 24 group size FYI!

Hey Gx460 owners , I got a question for you. Does your brake pedal makes hissing sound? That sound bothers me a lot especially when driving slow with no music. Is it normal or I got some vacuum leak somewhere? Owned several toyotas/lexuses but never had such issue before.

Dude. That usually means your brake booster or master cylinder is on its way out. Its leaking air thru the diaphram or gasket. Have someone check it out.

@@GXBOB Thats what I would think. But I am looking here at exploded view of brake system of Lexus GX460 and I dont see vacuum booster. It looks like there is a brake pump attached to a side of master cylinder. And all of that stuff is in the engine bay, not in the cabin. Other than light hissing sound every time you press pedal there is nothing wrong with it.

Lexus is not saving money with a smaller battery. It's there for a reason. The energy source impedance (battery) has to match the load impedance (starter) for best performance and durability. If you use a bigger battery, you overload the starter during engine cranking (over current). The starter is designed for a certain voltage drop range during crank.

I was born and grew up in cold part of Russia and smallest compact car there would have at least 55Ah. Because you are going to lose half of capacity in cold. Starter has super short cycle of couple seconds and then long pause time especially in gx with no start stop feature. Apart from voltage the amount of current is determined by load on the starter motor shaft. And starter motor is designed to withstand long cranking in cold winters when oil is viscous. What are you talking about?

Hey Vincent, i believe its your timing. Holding down the button for a couple of seconds sets your windows to partially vent without rolling all the way down. If you keep holding down the button, then the windows continue to go past the vent line and go all the way down.

You call 24F a small battery, but Honda owners consider it to be big compared to their 51R batteries. They are modifying their cars to upgrade to 35 and 24F sizes. By the way, I have a 2008 Avalon here with a NSB-AGM-24F battery that has 840 CCA in a 24F size. You can definitely get higher specced 24F batteries if you know where to look.

I have a light tan interior and the driver seatbelt is filthy. I’ve done everything to clean them but it’s my wife’s truck and the locations from her hand have over the past 8 years made it un-cleanable. I’d like to change out the front two seatbelts with the brown colored ones. Have you done this? As for the battery. I’ve replaced the batteries in all my cars and trucks with AGM and never installed a fuse diode. No issues so far.

There are so many reasons why your car won't start and it would require me to physically be there to diagnose but If your car doesn't even turn over and there are no lights on the dash whatsoever, then i would suspect my keyfob. Side note- I called the Lexus dealer service dept here in seattle and tried to pick their brain… when I told them I was changing out to a 27F they freaked out and thought that was crazy. He said something along the lines of “in 18 years of working on Lexus’s I’ve never heard of anyone doing that.” I then told him to google it and it’s all over the forums and KZbin. 🤣

Hey Bob, I can’t seem to get a clear answer on this. What is the voltage supposed to be for these 460’s when off and idling? Mine sits at around 13.7 amps at idle and like 12 when off. I’m trying to figure out if my alternator is bad or not (only 50k on odometer, 2017). Thanks!

I am not Bob but if you measure your battery voltage in the morning before starting car it should be around 12.8-12.6. If it is 12 it is badly discharged. When the car is running voltage must be 13.5-14.2 V so if your "amps" are really volts you should be good.

I bought a battery and it turns out the terminals are not on the same side (inward + to left) and now the cables are about 7 inches too short to cover the gap (new battery positive on the left but towards the front of the truck). Now I have no idea how to connect that unless I rewire the thing.

If you can’t exchange the battery, i would extend the wires with butt connectors and call it a day. Plenty of battery cables extension kits on Amazon.

You can if you really need to. If you have a lot of need for higher battery output such as sound systems/amplifiers, high output lighting, winches, etc....I chose not to because the benefits don't out weight the cost for me. I can get a great 27F group battery from Costco for under $100 that will last a fairly long time and will hold its charge for the duration of its life unlike the AGM battery. After 3 or so years when i need to replace the battery again, it will still cost less than the AGM battery combined.

Depends what your specific needs are. If you are just using the battery to start your GX on cold mornings than save some money and pick up the 24F. But, if you're a GX owner that is expanding your vehicle's usage into other accessories than i would pick up the 27F since the 27 has 10% more reserve capacity than its little brother which equates to roughly 40 additional minutes of power while the 24F is dead in your driveway because you forgot your maplight on.

Hi Bob I bought 24F everlast battery from Walmart and after installing and leave the car sit in my garage for a week or two it doesn’t start up until I jump start it with my battery booster. When it happens and I check the battery voltage it drops to below 11.1 The booster will charge the battery up before I can start it any suggestions please?

I’m assuming you already checked your alternator with an ohm meter to your battery while the engine is running?. A corroded or defective alternator diode will faultily continue charging the circuit even when the car off. This, in turn, will drain your car battery and cause the car not to start. If your alternator is good then next i would google parasitic drain. That’s usually the culprit.

Napa is 3 blocks from my house. costco is a continent over because they don't have one where i live which is the island of Guam. So i i were to fly to the closest continent and state to make my purchase, i would have ended up paying $4000 for the same battery.
