A 50 Mph, 70% overlap rear crash test.
Result: Pass - No Fuel Leak.
This is a test on the fuel system to ensure there is no fuel leakage in a high-speed rear-end collision. There is no instrumentation in the dummies.

The current 4Runner has a boxed rear frame (unlike the Tacoma's open C channel rear), and it has a boxed steel bumper (curved with styrofoam outboard) behind the rear bumper cover. Either way, 4Runner frame is screwed as stock or with a steel bumper... an aftermarket welded steel bumper will actually transmit more energy into the frame since the impact styrofoam would be deleted. So lower speed rear ends will end up in more damage with a n aftermarket bumper.

Had a 2012 4 runner was rearended , it saved our lives it held up to the impact , the other car was totaled ours was repairable , traded it 2 months later for a new one limited i shall say

I had a '21 4Runner and got rear-ended by a RAM 1500 pick-up doing 35 mph. The impact sent me into the vehicle in front of me and bent my frame in two places totaling my rig. I walked away unharmed and bought a '22 4Runner to replace it. Great SUVs.

@@LSX01Nation If you like the 4Runner, I won't hold it against you. I think it's an Amazing SUV, but I wouldn't buy one because of safety concerns. It only scored Marg inal in the IIHS's small-overlap frontal crash test.

DragonDude 5741 I totally understand your concern for safety and yes I was kinda hoping my 4Runner would score better but the chances of getting in a crash are so low for me because I only drive 1.5 miles to school everyday on road we’re the speed limit is no more than 30 so I guess it’s ok for me to drive this vehicle. I just try not to stress about it

More intrusion with the offset height. So this makes it a more difficult test to pass. If they were the same height the 4Runner would have absorbed the energy even more efficiently, protecting the fuel tank even more.

Riley Thompson it would be your safest bet, definitely safer than any of its competitors as the rear end of the majority of luxury SUV’s have gas tanks right under the trunk space. The batteries are sealed and the compartments are just as strong as the frame of the vehicle if not stronger.

Manny Echaluce Tesla’s actually rarely catch fire and in the instances they have, the wreck would’ve been so severe that survival in any car let alone the safest car on the road would be limited to circumstances I.E. speed, angle of impact, environment. The doors also still open so if “mum” can’t open the door and get out she wouldn’t be able to get out of a burning gas car. Gas also burns more rapidly than lithium meaning you have less time before the gas ignites if it didn’t immediately in the first place.

Robert Bennett an unofficial purpose of this test is to check the integrity of the front seats; in a lot of older cars the front seats would break, causing the occupants to fall into the rear seats, which can lead to serious injuries and to another crash since the driver wouldn’t be able to control the vehicle.

3rd row seats on a 2010+ 4Runner is extremely rare and 95% of them are standard two-row vehicles. If you're looking for a Toyota vehicle with a 3rd row, the 2008+ Highlanders all have 3rd row.

That's really interesting! Where I work, I'm hands-on with at least 4-6 Toyota vehicles a day. In my 12 years, I've only seen two 4Runners with a third row.

The 3rd row in my 2015 Highlander is big enough to fit one single average-sized human comfortably. The rear seats don't really get used often, but I wanted a larger SUV so I could tow.
