Back in the late 70s early 80s we did this work by hand. Track jacks and rakes, forks, shovels, anything to move rock and mud with. Jack track, rake it, dump ballast, and tamp track. A lot by hand with bosses screaming their guts out to hurry up so trains could run. Lot of fun during dog days with a thermometer laying in middle of track maxed out. Love seeing this machine.

Operated one of these here in Australia for years. We never used a backhoe though, just a little 3.5T digger on hirail (the non-powered ones aka "guide wheels") to get rid of the shoulder and then run the bar. The small digger could also have the new section tamped and boxed up if there was no resurfacing machines.

@DennisHAdams Undercutting the ballast for drainage, removing the rock, dirt and mud. Then they replace with new rock, the tracks drain normally. This machine is a cheaper way to do it,without the use of a much larger machine like a ballast under cutter mounted on the rails permanently. Type in Plasser American work train here on you-tube.That will explain the rest.

@TheJamesloy I understand that, But I have worked on the Irish railways and there is allways cables running along in the sides. This machine needs so much space to use it. So it wouldnt work for us. It is also a pain and costly to need a second machine the just clean the shoulder.

why do they need to remove the underbed? is this to reset the tracks or what? just never seen this done befor.

Is that AV Rail? I see their trucks running around town. That would be really interesting seeing a point-of-view camera in the cab for a day.

@monstertrac it cleans ballast out from a section so the section of ties, rails etc can be replaced, as for the transport it doesn't stick off the side as much as it looks.

Its my buddies brothers first year changing ties and hes a good operator. he said its one of the trickiest things hes had to learn how to run

The old ballest gets dirt inbeded in it over time so new ballest has to be added the old ballest is cleaned out and new added .Then the track is lifted and lined

Looks like it could cut trees also. Maybe they should try it to see if it will.

It would require a different chain, but possibly.

I wonder if the guy that came up with this machine go the idea when he dropped his chainsaw on the ground and noticed how it moved the dirt and rocks, after he finished cursing blunting the chain that is. Either that or he looked at a Sawfish and was inspired.

This machine makes a great mess of the ballast and spoils. rather than piling the spoils far away from the rails... Plasser makes a much better solution...

kebanyakan belum anti teror atau masih mudah terlepas pengunci pada bantaran rel itu karena sering terkena getaran saat dilalui kereta, pondasinyapun masih banyak yang labil sehingga rel sering patah
