It's a continuously variable transmission (CVT) (in layman's terms it's an automatic that doesn't shift). Nissan has been giving a lot of their cars this type transmission as well.

@mrLioneMafia It's a CVT, so it has an infinite amount of gears. The transmission switches to whatever "gear" it feels will work best given the circumstances. EX models come with paddle shifters that mimic a manual...the CVT computer uses gear ratios to do so.

All hybrids use CVT because it has the best fuel efficiency, the performance is not as good as other geared transmissions but the torque is higher and it's easy to drive. These cars are designed to save fuel in every way.

@jsol1992 Are you aware that the vehicle uses a CVT transmission? If it were in D and you floor it, it would rev that high. Read the top comment up there, or google CVT transmission. It's in ECO mode btw.

Because for some reason he drained the IMA battery right before making this video. All of the test drive reviews you have seen are on the basis of accelerating via both engines, and here it is the gasoline by itself...NOT how the car was designed to be used...I think that this was made by Toyota, frankly.

This was much slower than Edmunds' test time of 10.9 seconds for the Insight. Why?

I'm noticing zero battery assist from the gauge...must have started out with the battery drained. Of course this car will have underwhelming acceleration w/o the battery assist, the extra HP and more importantly, the instantaneous extra torque that it provides.

Keep in mind he's in Sport mode...meaning he's keeping the car in one gear and the transmission isn't switching. If it were in D, then it would move through gears and wouldn't rev up that high.

Real slow. My 2007 toyota camry hybrid can reach 100 mph in only 20 seconds. It uses a CVT and planetary gear system like the Prius. I would say camry hybrid is a fast hybrid car.
