@rwcmick also the rear camera and rear sensors also are available for the golfs, just sadly not for the us market.

@rwcmick The lights in the back are not frosted because they are primarily reading lights, they produce a very narrow beam sharply focussed for reading but are also used for ambient lighting, to avoid installing two sets i think. The ones in the front are for ambient lighting so they are diffused. In Europe the bluetooth in this model has voice dial and screen displays too and a back-up camera is standard on some models and available on others. Maybe the phone thing is a compatibility issue?

for rear view camera, you can get it if you live in europe, same if you want rearview camera or rear back up sensors, in canada you can get dual zone and leather in tdi or in 2.5 golf.

@policeman10019 Jetta and Beetle are made in Mexico. US Passat now made in the US, but the Golf is German made. Easy to tell, just check out the window sticker at the dealer or the tag on the door.

Good review, thanks! The relatively high cost of the car and diesel fuel does take away some of the appeal, but hats off to VW for at least putting it out there, especially for offering a 2-door version!

@rwcmick automatic climate control isn't offered in the us golf, cept for the golf Gti R.

@Pilotofdoom2 Maybe you are confusing a sticker you saw for the Jetta? In the USA, the Golfs are produced in Germany. Check out eBay motors and look at any recent Golf, look at the history report. Made in Germany. Look at the VIN: Jetta and New Beetle are made in Mexico (their VIN begins with 3), but the Golf and GTI are made in Germany (their VIN begins with W)

I actually love not having leather seats and climate control. Most higher end cars don't even offer cloth seats, that grinds my gears more. I hate when they force options. Luckily for me, I find the TDI to have the perfect mesh of options for me : ) looking forward to getting one in a few weeks!! Nice review : )

In the UK we can get rear camera and dual-zone climate control. I guess they're not available over in the US? I just picked up one of these, I love it already :)

Thanks for the honest review. If you go for the base model with a manual do you think it's better for the money? Or should you spend the extra to get all the toys? I'd get manual either way, but I like swiveling HID's and the LED running lights that come with, I like premium audio and Navi, sunroof don't really care about. It still has Bluetooth and a lot of other standard features on the base model which is not true of the regular Golf or even the GTI.

I love the Golf TDI - have a new 2012 on order with manual transmission -- as far as I'm concerned, automatic transmission takes much of the sport out of driving! I agree that the fabric on the arm rests is sub-standard!

Why is it that in this video, you have an RNS510 navigation system, while in the VW website, you can only equip a 4-dr Golf TDI with an RNS310?

Another thing that sucks about the U.S. version is that the A/C air vents are rectangular. The German spec Golf has the round A/C vents which are far superior because the air can be shot in ANY direction at any angle....why do they have to fuck things up for the U.S. market???

Even better than automatic climate control is the dual temperature control....my wife could have it warmer on her passenger side than I had in the driver's seat.....that was in the German spec Golf Plus TDI I had when we lived in Germany...I averaged 40 MPG with that car.

@derbigpr500 i agree with you BUT my grandmother has a vw jetta with vtex (fake leather) and vw did a good job with it because you dont need to condition it like leather and and it will always look new and you can just wipe it down with Windex. But my point is that its better for her to have the leather because its easier to get out of because you can slide around in it

English metric? The English use the Imperial system in their cars. The metric on US cars is for driving in Canada and Mexico. Also, if you're needing a camera to back up comfortably in a Golf... maybe you shouldn't be driving.

@floflorian Well, I drove the car for a week, then offered my impressions in this video, hence "test drive impressions." Having said that, I have experimented with in car filming, so far it has induced more sea sickness than benefit. However, I am always trying to improve. Check out my Camaro convertible video, it is the first auto review that I have actually been able to edit.

I think americans are still very "backward" so to say in terms of cars. Its clear that views of most americans on diesel engines for example are completely wrong. The fact is, in europe small diesel engines (3 liter and less) are more popular than small petrol engines. Why? Because they are superior to petrol engines in every single way, they're also much more technically advanced. They're faster, more efficient, more reliable, more quiet, more suited for everyday driving because of torque...

Nothing without clutch pedal and a real 5 or 6 speed transmission. Automatic transmissions suck. Never owned one, will never own one. For me there is just no that real pleasure of pressing the clutch pedal and getting into a different gear, that automatic cannot provide. Just my opinion.

Surprising that manual has worse rated MPG than auto. I'm guessing that depends on who drives it though. Heard the TDI are pretty torquey so I guess shifting timing might need to be worked on for most.

Why are americans so addicted to having leather in cars? And why do you look down on cloth? Just because its cloth, doesnt mean its cheap or it wont last long. In most cases, especially in german cars, cloth is very high quality and will probably look like new for longer time than leather would, it also has advantages over leather such as...its warm in winter, cold in summer, it makes you stick to the seat better, you dont slide like on leather. AND, animal didnt die for your car.

What's with your ignorance for pronouncing thing's the way they were intended? England made the bloody language, the least you could do it speak it properly, and no I am not from England, I'm from Australia, we have our own dialect but I still take the time to pronounce things properly. It's not that difficult.
