This is my first video ever. I am showing what I had done in attempting to flush the entire cooling system on this 2010 Jetta S 2.5 liter with the 6 speed automatic tiptronic KGL transmission. I drained and refilled it 4 times before adding VW G13 coolant to to it. Bare with me as I go through the many iterations and considerations of draining and refilling it ... I really wanted to get the old coolant fully out and try to set the proper water / coolant ratio for the environment I am in.
Special shout out and special thanks to Chris Fix, A1 Auto, Scotty Kilmer, Eric the Car Guy, and many others that have taken the time to document their efforts to video their services on cars.

Great informative video. hope you will have more. I have 2.5 Passat same engine. with VW is preventive maintenance all the time. I do the radiator flush , brake flush every other year. no matter how many miles I drive. transmission service every 35k miles just drain and fill,. oil change 5 to7 k miles and liqui moly. these german design are good as long as you do the preventive service.. last one I had i drove the 2000 jetta 2.0, 280k miles.

Some crits here: This video could be WAY shorter. We have more backstory about the car than actual information on flushing a VW Jetta 2.5.

I wonder if I could use the cooling system pressure tester pump at the reservoir cap to push more water out the thermostat. My VW service manual does not say much about flushing the radiator but it does recommend using the tester pump to push water beyond the thermostat upon filling. In any case, thanks for keeping track of how much water came out in each drain. Very helpful.

you video was very long. but watched it because is just want to be sure i dont miss anything. I have another question. After you put the coolant in you need to run the car with the heater on? and wait for the bubbles to do its thing and let the coolant sink in more ? some other videos they have this large funnels with the coolant toped up and let the engine run. am i right.?

not yet... still trying to schedule that in. Just had a lot of run around from dealers on the parts really. Tried to get better prices via dealers online websites but nearly impossible to see the rights part numbers. I may just bite the bullet and buy from local dealer... filter, gasket, plastic drain tube, and fluid. May buy the qt bottle adapter from 3rd party website (aftermarket). I do believe that the trans service is doable in the driveway (raised on stands to be flat, and using a infrared temp gun on pan with DIY cost of around $200) rather than at dealership at $600 with them checking trans fluid temp via ECM interface.

Could have been way more informative. 5 minute video of watching you undo the hose and undoing the expansion tank. Then the refilling process which is an IMPORTANT PART. Left out and wasted my time

thanks for checking it out. well, it was my first video AND I was recovering the cooling system as it was kinda rusty. Hopefully the approach I had will benefit someone recovering their own rusty system rather than a quick drain 2-3 qts and adding 50-50 fluid as that would not be a good service. I take it that you are gearing up for your own coolant flush, feel free to reply here on my video with the link of your video doing your flush. For Refilling ... remove reservoir tank cap and pour in new antifreeze mix. I show this towards the end and really take time to discuss the importance of getting as much old fluid out before refilling... that's why my video is so long (getting really bad stuff out). As I will not be flushing this again soon, hopefully you can get your video up as there are not so many videos on Jettas' services compared to lots on Ford trucks and SUVs that I typically refer to for my own vehicles.

Question: after drain, can you put coolant and drain is open and run the engine and let engine circulate the whole system with new coolant and after a while shut off the engine and close the drain fill the new coolant ?
@jasoding

So when you drain the radiator from the bottom hose, does that also drain the top expansion tank completely?
@awesomeroadtrips1719
@awesomeroadtrips1719 4 жыл бұрын
you engine takes 9Liter/ or 9.5qt, all you drained was the hose the radiator and the degas bottle, rest of the coolant is still in the engine block. thermostat is in the way of blocking all that coolant from coming out unless you have it steaming hot. otherwise you'll need to pull the thermostat. might as well change the water pump while in there.
@AltruisticWarrior
@AltruisticWarrior 2 жыл бұрын
@My name is August West You could but if you have contamination from say an oil cooler failure(very common), you'll be doing that for days. Undoing the radiator hoses dozens of times will likely cause a leak or breaking of the plastic tubing. Depending on the model and the year, way better to remove the thermostat and just replace it.

sure I hear you... car was purchased used in 2014 with maybe 60-70k miles and I think it was in a rental fleet. That is why I needed to flush it (drain really) so many times. It is something that I periodically monitor... the level and color. With all those flakes, something is rusting out. But getting now into 110k miles, I do expect that something will develop a leak. I didn't buy the car, lol, I would never buy a VW myself, but my lady loves it, so... I'm taking care of it.

General Car Service and Repair it’s because your head gasket is failing, oil is mixing with your coolant
@mattgeo5039
@mattgeo5039 5 жыл бұрын
@@neondiamondsaquaberry17 ya that could be a possibility. guess you need to do a drain after a week of so and check the color. if it is still murky then it could be oil mixing with coolant. it also could be some old gunk from a previous gasket issue.will be a good idea to flush it again after a week or something. perhaps you can try using the liquiMoly radiator flush. For a flush it is not cheap.

@@neondiamondsaquaberry17 Lol mine gets oil in it periodically when the oil cooler fails. Depending on the VW, it's VERY common. Mine goes out about every 50k. It's just a total pain in the ass to flush the oil out.
