2010 Volvo XC70 Tail Light Replace

Thanks SO much for doing this. I followed your instructions and it worked perfectly - saved me a LOT of money over having someone do it. I saw the comment about not removing the interior panels and accessing the rear of the light instead via the little hatch that Volvo left in the car. Although that might work for some, I think it makes the job a lot trickier. The panels come off very easily and give you ample access to the job - so I'm fine with how you did this. Absent your video, I would never have guessed to start by removing the light and top panel. Thanks again.

Very helpful video. It took me much longer than 45 minutes to accomplish this task on my 2008 XC70. That was a function of my experience, not the instructions. For those commenting that it only takes 15 minutes, the driver's side has easier access than the passenger side.

The quality of the video is terrible. But the quality of the information is FANTASTIC. THANK YOU!!! I can rip an engine out of a car, but get stressed out when removing interior pieces with their funky little clips. The bumper skin is also a nail biter. Thanks again. Without your video I'd have spent 4 hours figuring it out and probably taken a lot more of the interior apart. Thanks again.

Thank you for a good video. I managed to change the left tail light house on my 2010 V70 thanks to this. I finished in about 90 minutes. Since mine was the left light I did not have to remove the interior of the hatch. I just opended a spot behind the lights and found the three nut heads.

Thanks for the video . Only thing is I didn’t take all the interior out , there was a small cover just behind the light that you can remove and get to the 3 10 mm nuts. 👍

You can't swap the lamp assembly by just the 3 10mm nuts,.you have to remove the plastic bumper trim, the lamp is held in place by two plastic clips bolted by three bolts to the body. You have to loosen the bumper trim.

Great! Thanks a lot! The only other thing I found was I popped off two push-on hex head retaining clips under the bumper when I loosened the trim along the back. They stripped out a little, and didn’t go back on too well. So they should really be unscrewed first.

I had this issue as well and agree. They are plastic and don't take kindly to being forced off.

This is not the right way to replace the rear light. You can access the 3 nuts that hold it on by removing the carpeted cover right where the light is, the same cover you remove to replace the bulbs. It takes about 10 mins to do this and I know as I did it myself on my crash damaged Volvo. Also I got the rear light for £50 from a Volvo parts breaker in great condition.

What about the bumper trim, do you remember if you had to remove that or did it go smoothly without removing the trim?

Be very careful following this video. The v70 and I presume the xc has a hidden torx bolt between the bumper and body on the inside of wheel arch underneath the liner after you remove the three visible torx

I'm really sad to see you've gone that far. No need to take off all the upholstery. Socket wrench with flexible extension would fix it for you, bro! Dismount, replace it and put everything back. 15 minutes flat and you're done.

I agree, just changed left hand unit, the 3 nuts easily accessible through hole in trim, we removed the two plastic lugs at the bottom of the new unit as they serve no structural purpose, Volvo over engineering, and did the job in 5 mins.

On a 12 year older volvo its just a clip on cover and a couple of screws. This is devolution
