Which makes it harder to find people to train up and put together a national team. I'm not saying that USMNT aren't good athletes but they aren't the best athletes America has to offer. However, only a fool could truly not realize that. Rugby (union specifically) is THE sport in NZ as a result they are the best team in the world.

Just look at Spain. Spain won the World Cup 2010 and they have a teeny ass country. Spain could fit into California about 4 times and If every single person in Spain was a football supporter it still wouldn't add up to the number of supporters we have here in the US so popularity isnt an issue

@Jonathanizer Ah, from Germany. Yes, it's a tiny sport there for sure. But in many other countries it is big. I'm not quite sure where you saw that there are only 2 professional clubs though? There are ~35 pro clubs in New Zealand alone, where it is almost like a religion. But it is huge through Africa, parts of Asia, France, parts of Italy, England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Australia, all the Pacific countries.. Rugby is gaining interest all over in recent times, and will even be played in the

Population interest directly affects the power and ability to establish yourself in the nation. Your ability to establish yourself determines the quality of talent you can build and your overall retention of athletes. @Jonathanizer next olympics - so suddenly countries like America are trying hard to quickly develop decent teams. The problem with rugby is though, it will probably take a few matches just to understand even the basics, then a long time after that to appreciate the details. But once you get the basics, it's a sport that is extremely exciting and enjoyable to watch, so you should try it :)

@Jonathanizer 20 major nations participated - good chance a lot of people knew about it. Also maybe because it is the 3rd largest sporting event in the world (after Fifa WC and summer Olympics). Rugby is a great sport to watch, I'd risk saying the greatest (obviously this is an opinion) for those that truly understand the intricacies involved. That is coming from someone who watches 2-3 football games per day on average, and has competitively played ~10 sports.
