I was 19 years old at the time, the New Zealanders really fell in love with themselves, even in the first match with the Slovaks, showing incredible dedication even with a smaller class. In the match with the Slovaks, we equalized the score at 90 + 3 minutes added. They were not afraid to play combat football on equal terms with Italy. For a long time we led 1-0 and equalized with a left penalty. I also remember the goalkeeper of the New Zealanders in the match with Italy made a blunder, stumbled, knocking the ball out, but otherwise played flawlessly, and when he could not save, the frame of the ilm goal defenders helped. In the match with Paraguay, we also played almost on equal terms. Both of them had chances, and the New Zealanders, if they had scored a goal, could have left the group from the first place (!) even, that would have been the same alignment.

Just getting to the cup was huge ! We as a small nation not known for our football prowess rode this wave of great joy and very nearly advanced out of our group ! although we were always out skilled by bigger and better teams our guys showed huge heart and made us proud.

The game against NZ was just a few days before exams at the intermediate school (13 y.o.). I have awful memories as an Italian. And after the game, as if it was not enough, my mother was angry with me because i was losing time instead of studying hard. LOL :) The worst however came days later against Slowakia. If you scored against Paraguay you would even won the group!

Funny, had VAR been around back then the Slovakian goal would have been scrubbed off for an offside in the build up. That Italian penalty wouldn't have stood either. Sure we were unbeaten but we were undone by poor officiating.

In football anything can happen because any 1 player can set a game alive because in football you are allowed to opwnly express yourself on the field, Rugby is just all about breaking down the lines until there is a gap and the backs can work a combination to try score a try.
