Just changed the starter in our 2012 T&C with 150k miles on it. It started to crank slowly, I checked the battery and it had lots of power, so I assumed it was the starter, which we already had laying around, brand new, cause we knew it would break eventually. Thanks for the video, and thanks for showing how to do it laying on the ground under the car, cause we all don't have lifts and stuff. But put Jack stands under your car when you're under there, it saves lives. Cheers

@GasDiesel Garage You have saved me. I got jacked around by 4 different mechanics trying to tell me this is a full day job and that they damn near need to pull the motor out. After your video, I did this in my back yard with 0 mechanic experience or knowledge in a few hours. Thank you so much. You helped this single dad of 3 save a bunch of money and got my dad van back on the road.

Jesse Harris well you can do two things....you can raise the engine very slightly with a jack...no need to take the engine mounts loose just jack up a little bit on the engine....or just take the 3 bolts out of the front exhaust manifold. It is a pain in the but. It can be done

Just a tip for everyone, I noticed you used an impact wrench on the factory jack. I did this very often with the same vehicle till one day the jack just dropped with the wheel off and my leg very close to being under the rotor. The threads were striped, and i blamed the jack being defective. Then years later i did the same thing with the jack on my 2013 charger. And noticed the threads were damaged from doing it. It seems the force of rushing the jack through it strips the threads. I don't do that any more. Lol

I hope no one else does it this way. I wouldn't rely on a scissor jack to hold up the van while you're working under it. Always use jack stands or at least something to hold the car if it falls down. You don't want to have the crushing weight of the car falling down on you. Thanks for showing us how to access the starter. Nice video but just a question. If the person doing this for instance attempts to take out the bolt on the motor mount instead of just rotating it around and the bolt snaps off, what can be done. Said person tried to drill it out but it’s not working. They want to just tie it with rope…….
@Gasdieselgarage
@Gasdieselgarage Жыл бұрын
Well unfortunately that is a common problem with those bolts snapping off…trust me I’ve done it too. The person really needs to drill out the broken bolt completely or could weld a stud on to the frame to secure that cross bar. Rope…uh …sounds unsafe ☹️

The only step you bypassed and should have thought of before re-installing the cross brace was to connect the battery and test the starter before tightening the brace bolts. This way if something isn't connected correctly or at all, you can slide back under and verify any issues. Maybe think about using some jack stands to save your life if that scissor jack were to fail and drop the vehicle on you, just saying.🤔🤔👍👍

Look at the battery cable terminals. Most are crimped on these days and corrode between the wire and terminal. Also check the ground wire where it goes to the engine block for the same type of corrosion. Here in Central New York state, where road salt is used liberally in the winter, it is usually the cabling.

I didn't have another jack, but I had a piece of wood and a long clamp that I reversed to push up on the engine a little bit. The only tool that worked for me was a cheap double-sided ratcheting wrench from harbor freight. none of my other tools seemed to have the angle I needed. I was able to get to it sort of from behind if that makes any sense.

SAE Offset Ratcheting Wrench Set, 4 Piece . I guess it was the offset that made the difference for me if the offset is the hump.

The starter is not very expensive …less that 100 bucks…if you do it yourself which you can …you’re basically paying just for the part.

So, my wifes t/c 2014 van has been low on tranny fluid cause the gasket to tranny is leaking. Started shifting rough and broke down, when she went to start it "note this has been going on for a week." Car shutting off and restarting. Now it won't turn over i just get a clunk noise and the batteries drained, replaced battery and still getting a clunk when i turn key. Is that the starter that she fried by me not taking care of the leak or is this something other than starter? I know they have sensors on everything nowadays. If the trannies to low will the van just not start? Thanks for the quik response if you can cause it's got my brain just dumbfounded. Im leaning towards starer cause she said it's been hard to crank while this was going on, i figured she kept holding key over and with the car in limp mode it wouldn't start right away or something and fried the starter.

Well let’s first see if the engine turns freely…if you’re able turn the crank pulley bolt with a socket and ratchet. If you’re good there….try starting it again…the reason I’m having you do this is the make sure it’s not a bad spot in the flywheel. Message me back on your results, we will go from there my friend

@@7thfrettin163 yes sir exactly but also we are checking to back sure your flywheel is not missing teeth and to see if your starter is kicking out or or not.

@@Gasdieselgarage ended up being the starter my friend. That sucked, and my right hand feels the wrath of that tiny space for that starter. Also trannies leaking and was in limp mode i believe, and would shut off and my wife kept starting the car over and over when it would die out. Replaced the pans gasket that looked the cleanests under car to no avail for tranny. Leaks still there, somewhere behind the pan , the cars fan is pulling fluid from back of motor and sending it on the motor. Spent like 60 bucks on some atf +4 so i gotta figure out that leak fast. Can't afford to keep dropping that expensive tranny fluid in the car. 5 quarts. At 12 bucks a quart.

NEVER EVER NEVER WORK UNDER A VEHICLE WITH ONLY SIZZOR JACKS. CHANCES ARE GREATER YOU WILL DIE DOING THIS KIND OF THING, REGARDLESS OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE. AT LEAST HAVE A HEAVY FLOOR JACK IF YOU DONT HAVE JACK STANDS. THE WHOLE CAR IS BALANCING ON SOMETHING DESIGNED TO TAKE A WHEEL OFF AND PUT ANOTHER ON WITHOUT YOU UNDER IT. JACK STANDS ARE CHEAP ENOUGH TO BUY. DONT ATTEMPT ANY UNDER VEHICLE WORK WITHOUT THEM. YOU AND THIS GUY WILL BE OUT OF YOUR LEAGUE IF YOU DO AS HE HAS WITH SUPPORT FOR THE VEHICLE:)

This does NOT work. The black/red cable is too small to allow you to wiggle this unit out. Need to find a better video that shows how you can disconnect this cable cause I can't figure it out.
