I was with the L.A. Scots in 1997 when we went to North Ireland and we worked with field marshal. God I was just a kid then. We all got together and played No Bottle it sounded so effing good

Glen Halley. You are right. The other thing they get wrong is that the height of hose tops should be measured with the first three fingers down from the top of the tibia bone. Garter flashes, just decide where and everyone do the same. If you have diced hose, they should cut down from the centre to an agreed length. Drummers sporran's; on the side, on the hip, on the arse. Drum major should decide and everyone does what he says. Same with Glengarrys. I suppose they rightly are all too focused on the music. But its an easy thing to put right !

I have been told that the correct length for the kilt is to show 1/2 of the knee cap. But most bands I see cover the complete knee.

That is correct, but remember they've been in it for hours and they slide down a bit. That and the fact their main concern is tone and musical accuracy now

I find this two voice arrangement in octave 3rds so amazing and pleasing...I can't understand why so many scottish pipers have some sort of prejudice with that, preferring not to use it in competitions.

R. Paes: In piping, it's called playing "seconds". The prejudice stems back to the early 20th century when the serious,top flight competition bands thought that playing seconds was bush league, showy display to compensate for poorer piping. You never heard it in competitive piping until the 1980's, when a much less formal style of competition, the Medley, was introduced.

@@raonipaes LOL...good things come to those that wait. Two other very noticeable changes that came along in the 80's were the inclusion of tenor drummers in competition....traditionally, tenor drummers were only used during parades or tattoos, if at all. The other change was a radically different style of playing. For decades, piping was played in a very melodic fashion with many runs and trills. Then a staccato style of playing came into vogue, were notes were shortened or lengthened to match each other for a very machine-like sound. This style still predominates today.

This is awesome, but the ensemble is quite poor in parts - drumming is constantly dragging throughout, most notably in the strathspeys and reels. But they sure got it together later at the worlds! Great band.
