Incredible closing run by Drosselmeyer, and nice to see So You Think didn't disgrace himself. Not easy to travel half way around the world and be competitive on your first run on dirt.

Fantastic run by Game on Dude. But Drosselmeyer : wow I never ever thought about him... :o)
@vegasj3055 ай бұрын
I put $5 on him at 60-1 odds and going home I ran into a a 15-minute detour that was going about 1 mile an hour and was thinking about my bet the entire time. I had a hall of fame trainer, a hall of fame jockey, and horse that won at 1 1/2 miles in the Belmont stakes, I turned around and went back and put another $100 on him!! Got back $6405 (-$100 tip)!! My gut was dropping coming for home and this call is something I'll never forget!! If it wasn't for that detour, I never would have gone back! The you Jesus!!

Mike did say that the loss in the 2010 BCC will always hurt, but this year's win helped a lot!

Heartbreaking loss for Game On Dude. He put away four or five of the best horses in the country and got sniped right at the end.

Compare this call to the call of the 2009 Kentucky Derby. "Out of the clouds" Unbelievable call.

Down the stretch I was worried that Drosselmeyer just wouldn't have enough time to make up the distance. He's more of a distance horse and needs those extra furlongs where other horses begin to tire. Game On Dude ran a great pace but Drosselmeyer's sprint at the end was incredible. Its obvious, too, that Mike Smith studies his competition in both riders and horses. He knew that he should be far away from Game On Dude so the horse wouldn't see and chase him. Simply incredible!

This is the kind of result that makes me wonder how good Animal Kingdom could be next season. 2:04.27 is the 2nd slowest Classic in history. Animal Kingdom won the Derby in 2:02.04 in his first try on dirt, lost to Shackleford (2nd in the BC Mile) by less than a length in the Preakness, and made an incredible run to get 6th in the Belmont following his early trouble. I was initially skeptical following the Derby, but all things considered, I think Animal Kingdom could be a major force next year.

They DO race on turf in the U.S. There is a 12f Breeders Cup Turf race, a turf mile, and several other turf races. Most big tracks have turf courses in addition to their dirt or synthetic tracks. However, turf tracks are less durable, more difficult to maintain, and require water. (About half of the continental U.S is semiarid.) Over time, dirt racing has become more popular in the U.S. than turf racing, and more horses are bred for dirt than for turf. That's just the way it is.

I am soo sad. :( I was watching this for Uncle Mo... I was soo mad when he just dropped off at the end... I thought there was something behind the seen where we can't see (people pay him to lose) Then I find out his enzymes were high . . . and even sadder when I heard Uncle Mo retired from being sick :'(. I guess Drosselmeyer is a good win because he is from Winstar farms (I was there once) For Uncle Mo :'(

Those American dirt courses, after all, is still pretty different than those European all-weather courses. Besides, there are pretty few all-weather tracks in Europe, and most European races are on turf, which makes elite European horses more likely to participate in BCT, which runs on more familiar turf surface, instead of BCC. For European or AUS/NZL horsemen, forcing their gallopers to participate in American races on dirt is pretty uneconomical since they rarely run on such a surface which would more easily to make them underperform, just the same as Galileo, George Washington, Rip Van Winkle, So You Think, etc. I remembered Sea The Stars, whose owner and trainer retired him immediately after winning the Arc, instead of going on for BCC (or at least BCT --- maybe they even never had that intention at all), in which there would've been a battle of titans between he and Zenyatta.

@drofheim I'm sorry, but Bart Cummings is the best trainer in the world .... ever, and he would have got SYT right to the top of his game to win this race, and in my opinion, he would have won the Arc aswell.

Give it a rest on O'Brien, he is the best trainer in the world, which other trainer in history year in year out tries his hardest to win every G1 in the world? From the Phoenix stakes in Ireland to the Kentucky Derby, O'Brien has a runner in it, he may have not won everything but no other trainer comes close, think no other trainer would have got SYT closer, feel good for Mike Smith tho, great ride.

@33madisonave Sad that Uncle Mo was owned by someone who cared more about his own ego than he did about what was good for the horse. Health concerns aside, he had no business running 10 furlongs, clearly, particularly since he had not trained for it, after having been laid up sick for so long.

@drofheim Mr. Aidan O'Brien is an excellent trainer, but best in the world? He has run 25 horses in the Arc, and despite having the full backing of Coolmore, he he has won it once. He hasn't won the Breeders Cup Classic and his record at the Breeders Cup overall is pretty weak. Even if you confine the argument to European trainers his record in big races is good, but considering the talent and numbers of horses he has access to, I don't think it is extraordinary.

@johnnyg129 I think that TicinoParadise was referring to what he sees as thin fields for the Classic in the 2000's; he meant to imply Ghostzapper was exceptional because of its extraordinary talent. A healthy Ghostzapper would have held up in any period. Yeah the Turf was nothing great either.
