It was widespread news story unfortunately most of the clips are in Japanese as far as searching out here but but there are some. I am not sure if we are talking about the same story but the mother was washed up into the 2nd floor of a building where she was able to make her escape until what I assume was the next day. Her son was the person on the roof spotted clinging in the video I am thinking and was actually washed away but also survived supposedly by clinging onto another rooftop. That is the story and that is about where he was when the tsunami hit. There are videos showing him right before on the roof running about.

It is from the imploding dust from inside the houses being forced outward in front of the wave like a pressure wall in an explosion.
