In the town of Rikuzentakata 80% of the buildings were destroyed and only 8% of the population lost their lives. The warnings likely saved the lives of the 92% of people that survived where their homes were destroyed.
It's so terrible. I hope those in the building were knocked unconscious by that wave and didn't suffer. It's heart breaking. I love you my Japanese brothers and sisters.

All 4 made it. 3 barely clinging on top of the roof underwater at times. And one, the oldest and slowest, Itosan, just made it to top of ladder. Here he clung on submerged untill the wave passed. Ice cold water! They were there almost 2 hours

At the beginning, you can tell by the tone of their voices that they're excited because they think they're just going to watch a spectacle, then by the end of it they're not laughing anymore.... No one could imagine the extent of what would happen, could they? I hope they have a better forewarning system now, because those sirens weren't much use, starting once everything was being washed away at such speed.
@Tindometari3 жыл бұрын
Initially, the height of the tsunami was grossly underpredicted. Two metres, as I recall, which by Japanese standards is not huge. So people were expecting a significant tsunami, but what actually came blew those expectations to the winds.
@maearcher47213 жыл бұрын
There were several issues with warning. 1)-They had been warned many times before and evacuated-and nothing happened. Hence some didn't take it seriously. Especially since few had any tsunami of importance in memory. 2) Height of wave was underestimated, and even evacuation plans didn't took into account scenario of such high waves. Hence even some designated evacuation spots were in area which was later hit by tsunami. Some completely topped over by the water. So some people were forewarned on time, evacuated-but not high enough. 3)Tsunami took its time. They were forewarned with aproximate time of when tsunami would hit each the perfecture(and it was correct estimation), but from first initial touching of tsunami to tsunami reaching every nook, it sometimes took over 40 minutes. After half an hour, some people thought danger has passed and left evacuation area. And even if they stayed they might have not been safe. I recall story of one high school being used as designated evacuation spot. People evacuated stayed in top floors initially, but after 30-40 minutes most people descended to school's gymnasium on ground floor. They were very lucky that some people stayed on roof, saw wave aproaching(realised it would hit ground floor), rushed to gymnasium and got everybody back to upper floors on time. Otherwise they'd probably die in that gymnasium.

In many areas sirens started way before the tsunami, there were quite a few minutes left to it. The problem is that many were in no hurry to evacuate, especially those who have experienced tsunamis in the past. They just thought walls would protect and it isn't that serious as always. It's kind of like how many people who live in tornado alley don't take warnings as seriously as they should. They live through so many warnings and mild experiences that they are caught off guard when something major comes along.

There were warnings ahead of the wave, that is why these guys are standing up high. But a lot of people just didn't believe the warning, so then this is what you get. You don't gamble with nature, you'll lose.

The people of Japan just amazes me. Their history of problems, being destroyed by water and everything you can think of. Their massive loss of life, homes, jobs, family, lands but they push their chest out and dig in to rebuild it all. Their middle name is bounce back. We Americans could learn much from them. They are some kind of people and it makes my heart hurt when they go threw thing like this video. I just wish them the best with all my heart. I will be praying for them.

This is footage few people get to witness in real life. It is terrifying to see how quickly normal life is changed to total chaos by nature, so quickly and on such a massive scale. My heart goes out to the loved ones lost and to the pain and suffering endured in rebuilding such a great, proud nation. Let's hope the world responds in support when and wherever this happens again next...

Isn't what we call normal life always just the lull between two disasters, though? Maybe our lives are the aberration, and what we call disasters are the norm.
