Joe Buck's, "And we will see you tomorrow nigh", was homage to his father's call in the 1987 World Series of Kirby Puckett's home run in the bottom of the ninth in game six at Minnesota against the Cardinals. His father Jack Buck was the Cardinal's radio announcer but at the time was CBS radio's announcer for the Word Series. You may remember his "I don't believe what I just saw", call of Kirk Gibson's walk off home run in the Dodgers/Oakland Word Series in 1988.

Mike Shannon's radio calls I hear always make me imagine him as a guy who thinks the sun is shining every day of the year. Sounds like he has such a general positive attitude on everything and his team winning only makes it better. Maybe he just constantly thinks about how wonderful it is that he gets to broadcast Cardinal games for a living. As cool as that must be, it also means his calls of dramatic moments always seem to be lacking in intensity. It's hard to find euphoria if you're always in such a good place mentally to begin with. I feel like a home radio broadcast of something like Freese's walk off in this game should have someone going batshit crazy. I would bet Shannon talking about how this is an all time finish in the history of the game may be about as excited as he ever gets and that's not saying much. But bless his soul for seeing things so positively in life I guess. For any of you who listen to Shannon's calls on the regular, I'd love to hear more of your perspective on this. I am an outsider just kind of theorizing and don't really know what I'm talking about.

I personally know one of the guys who was on this team. In fact, I think he was one of the first guys out of the dugout to celebrate after this homerun. Gerald Laird the backup catcher that year was someone that my grandparents hosted through the USA baseball trials that used to come to our town. It was basically a program to figure out which high school players were going to make the cut to for Team USA and the players would come from all over the country and stay with host families. A number of players went through there that ended up in the majors and my grandparents hosted a few of them. They hosted Laird back in I think 1998 or 1999 when I was less than 10 years old. The most notable being Laird and also Ian Kennedy who spent the past few seasons with the Royals and the Diamondbacks before that (was a Cy Young candidate one year with the Diamondbacks). Laird was with the Tigers for a good portion of his career including the playoff teams that never won the World Series but he finally got one when St. Louis picked him up for the 2011 season to replace Jason Larue.

My favorite bit here (other than the homer) is seeing Berkman pat the plate ump after he bumps into him during the celebration. Also, just before the 3-2 pitch, most of the Rangers bench looks pretty laid back. Or maybe they were exhausted by that time. Hell of a game: frustrating at times, downright ugly at times, and then three innings of tension, tension, tension--and thrills.
