I'll be using CRC's Throttle Body and Mass Airflow Sensor cleaning spray on my 2013 Camry and then doing the Idle Relearn afterwards. This applies to 2012 to 2017 Camrys, but could apply to other Toyota's such as RAV4 and Scion that use the same 2AR-FE engine.

I've found that if you disconnect the negative terminal on the battery for a few minutes, then connect the battery and start the car, the idle should reset itself in just a few seconds. Nothing more to do, except take it for a short drive. Any further throttle relearn and refinement should happen as you drive it.

Great instructional video thank you. BTW video did not show when the intake duct clamp was tightened onto the throttle body, this comes last and is easy to forget. Also after cleaning the throttle body it is perfectly normal for RPM to go up since air flow has changed because of the cleaning performed. Going through re-calibration /re-learn process will bring RPM back to specification as shown. One could just drive around for awhile and result would be the same..Thanks again.

Just cleaned my 2012 Camry throttle body and MAF sensor last week. cleared the check engine light that came on from taking the maf sensor off and just allowed the cars idle to slowly adjust itself on its own (which it did) went for a drive right after and it’s Been running great since. P.S. My 2012 Camry has almost 170,000 miles

Good job!. Mine is 2013 and about 74K. I’m gonna do PCV valve change soon and I bought a borescope to do a detailed video since it’s in very tricky and tight space. Thank you for coaching me through this procedure. I have done it many times on linkage throttle bodies but was always afraid I'd damage the electronic servo mechanism. You are the second mechanic that confirmed there is no fear of damage so long as you keep the key out of the ignition during the cleaning. No need to disconnect the battery. Once the procedure is complete start the engine and No Error codes!!!! Mine immediately idled about 1100 rpm. I drove it for 30km+ on the highway and once the engine was good and hot the idle dropped below 750rpm. I restarted the engine and it stayed at that same normal idle speed. BTW for some reason the blue gloves I used(perhaps cheap ones) began to melt and break up. I think it was after coming in contact with the carburetor cleaner as I cleaned the TB. Good thing I noticed it as pieces glove could have fallen into the TB. My top plate was very clean in when I first looked but when I cleaned the underside I discovered it was coated in carbon. Anyways, many thanks at steering me around the few snags like prying out the plastic cable harness clip and coming around the passenger firewall to loosen the 10mm screw clamp with an extension. Happy motoring at 130,000km. Cheers to DIY & Life Skills.

Only 130km, you gotta good start in keeping your car running well. I’ve done TB and MAF cleaning on many modern cars and I’ve never had any big issues. Most of the time, the idle RPM self corrects immediately or after running for few minutes. Only a few times (less than 20%), I would have to do idle-learn procedure. My blue gloves, bought from Harbor Freight, holds up well against cleaning sprays, but the clear gloves I bought for COVID protection, seems to slightly dissolve slightly on contact with car cleaning sprays. Also, hopefully, you cleaned the mass airflow sensor too while at it.

Next, I’m gonna replace the PCV valve, which is in a tricky location, but it’s definitely accessible by removing the front left tire. What year is your Camry?
@bartonchu670
@bartonchu670 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I cleaned the MAF sensor safely with the correct MAF spray. I bought a new PCV part from the dealer last year but could not get in far enough to replace it even after jacking up the front end and seeing a few videos on how to do it. This 2ARFE engine had its PCV part moved in front of the passenger lower firewall but high enough that it's near impossible to access, unlike earlier versions of in-line 4s. Fortunately, the dealer mechanic and an after market mechanics both say that if I am not burning oil or getting error codes then not to bother replacing it. For now I have a $20 Toyota souvenir. But if you want to put out a video on how to do it I will surely tune in. The only common story I hear everywhere about these newer engines is to change the 0W20 engine oil every 5km or every 6 months....with out fail to keep the engine protected. Our Camry is a 2012 and does not burn oil. Thank goodness! We bought it used because the computerization of late model cars has me fearful of things breaking down and leaving me at the mercy of the dealer and automaker. Things like e-parking brakes and start-stop engines just don't make any sense to me and has my mind shopping for older dumbed down cars rather than newer ones. I've come to the conclusion this is to have the computer fully control the car from steering, braking, lane departure assist, proximity sensors and back up cameras all for the purposes of A-I and communicating back to the Mother ship. Just recently I learned, from U-tubes,how to deal with servicing my son's newer Civic with e-parking brake(EPB) w/o a computer so I got around that issue safely and best of all, no error codes. Having mentioned that, I read that Toyotas have a special sequence of button pushes that puts their EPB into service mode so we can work on them w/o a computer. Good move TOYOTA!!! I will stick with this brand for now. Cheers to DiY & Life Skills!

@@johnhefter3815 make sure clamp is really loose and not obstructing the hose. Afterwards, it’ll take some wiggling back and forth. In my case, I used a long screwdriver to help pry up from all sides. If you have small can of penetrating oil spray or even W2, it’ll help to slide the flex hose out. It’s in there tight for a reason being once the airflow amount is determined by MAF sensor, it doesn’t want any air leak to alter that which will mess up fuel to air mixture ratio since modern car performance is very sensitive to the accuracy.

@DIYLifeSkills
@DIYLifeSkills 3 жыл бұрын
Next time, I'll let my push down on the gas pedal without the car started to see if the TB plate opens up. If it does, that'll be a good way to go as well. I got a bunch of microfiber towels from Costco in a pack. They are typical work shop towel size about 12" x 12". Actually, this was a good size for me because it's small enough fit into TB but big enough to wrap around your hand. When it gets to 100K, I'll probably remove the TB completely and do the deep cleaning. Thanks for comments!

There are at least 2 KZbinrs who show the cleaning with ignition key on accessory and with an assistant or stick at the gas pedal to keep the plate open for cleaning. Sounds convenient. But Car Care Nut advises against such practice, and some other mechanics even warn that the butterfly may suddenly close on your fingers. I don't know. But I like the idea of using a soft wedge to keep the thing open between wiping and swapping rags -- with car key off. I also wonder if pressing the gas pedal with ignition on would activate the injectors?

My 2016 Rav4 (4cyl) occasionally idles a little low when in D or R (dipping down to around 500), and will vibrate for a few seconds until idle picks back up to 650 rpm. This happened without the AC on. Is this something concerning I should look into resolving? Should I try to disconnect the battery to relearn the idle? Throttle body was cleaned recently, 10k miles ago. New battery around 5 months ago. Thank you for replying to comments!
@DIYLifeSkills
@DIYLifeSkills Жыл бұрын
How many miles do you have? Once car idle falls below 600 RPM, engine will run rough and close to 500 engine can shut down. This is because air and fuel mixture has to be close to 14.7 to 1 ratio. Between Mass airflow sensor, oxygen sensor, and throttle body position, ECU computes correct fuel mixture…meaning adjusting throttle plate opening, fuel amount, etc.
@DIYLifeSkills
@DIYLifeSkills Жыл бұрын
If you didn’t clean mass airflow sensor, do that. Also any air leak after mass air flow sensor will throw off the air:fuel me tire ratio. Very carefully check entire intake hose for any gaps and crack. Additional air feed after MAF will throw off calculation.
@DIYLifeSkills
@DIYLifeSkills Жыл бұрын
Also any tiny leak in vacuum hose will also throw off the air fuel mixture. The problem with rubber hoses are visually they can look OK until you bend it and can see hairline cracks.
@DIYLifeSkills

Though less likely, your fuel injector could be slightly clogged so it’s not feeding as much as car thinks it’s feeding. Usually you can clean this with regular use of fuel injectors. I buy a gallon of Lucas fuel injector cleaner and use it regularly in all my cars. Just put a small amount in gas tank before every few fill up

Can you just spray some cleaner through the mass air flow hole into the throttle body ?
@DIYLifeSkills
@DIYLifeSkills Жыл бұрын
There are multiple challenges with that. First for intake air to travel from MAF hole to the TB, engine has to be running, and ECU may get confused in calculating MAF signal when it's pulled out. Second, the carbon deposits on the TB platter require some scrubbing pressure to come off. Even when I spray directly to black deposit spots, they don't dissolve and drop downward. This procedure is not difficult at all. Just unscrewing few things apart and you only need to do this once every few years. :-)

Most modern cars I’ve seen are all electronically controlled TB. We are mainly Toyota/Lexus family and I’ve been cleaning this way on a on multiple generations of Camry and Corolla without any issues over many years. Only one time VW Jetta showed erratic RPM and lit up the Check engine light, but upon idle relearn steps, all was normal again. If you want, you could either disconnect the TB wiring or you disconnect the negative terminal of battery, so that there is no awareness of TB plate being moved.

How many miles? Definitely the most likely and cheapest to do is clean MAF and TB. If that doesn’t fix it, you could have a slight vacuum leak. Check all air hoses very carefully. Should be same assuming everything is installed back properly. To be frank, I do MAF and TB cleaning regularly for all my cars, and most of the time, the idle learn is not necessary as car’s computer does that automatically every time you drive. It’s actually constantly being monitored and adjusted. Idle relearn is only used if engine idles really rough and not safe to drive. Try driving for about 30-60 minutes normally in city to give speed variance vs. constant highway speed and it should adjust to the optimal setting automatically.

So I cleaned my throttle body and MAF sensor on a 2008 Camry. I was able to get the idle to run normally after following the idle relearn procedure, but I noticed there is a delay in acceleration when I mash on the gas pedal. Does anyone know how to fix it?
@DIYLifeSkills
@DIYLifeSkills Жыл бұрын
First Camry has a slight pause when you try to accelerate quickly unlike German cars. That said, more pronounced delay in acceleration is likely some combination of spark plugs being too old or out of gap, fuel injector is not spraying out fine mist due to partial clog, or have too much carbon buildup on piston heads. How many miles do you have in the car? And when was the spark plugs replaced? Also, filling up with top tier gas will keep the engine cleaner and running smoother over time. Top tier gas are found at Shell, Mobile, Costco, etc. depending on your answer I have additional suggestions.

Also, are you burning oil? I use Lucas fuel injector cleaner every few months to keep the fuel injectors clean.

After cleaning both the throttle body and the MAF sensor, some codes popped up. So I used an OBD scanner tool to erase the codes. I don't know if the slight delay is caused by wiping out the learned values from the ECU or from cleaning out the throttle body. Before, I noticed that the throttle was more responsive, but after cleaning, I noticed that it would take a second or two after pressing on the pedals all the way before I could feel the hard acceleration. However, I recently bought the car for 95,000 miles. I have no idea how the previous owner serviced the car, but I decided to give it a tune up. I replaced the air filter with a K&N filter and added the Lucas Fuel Injector (like you mentioned). I would like to change out my sparkplugs, but I have a 2GR-FE engine. Getting those sparkplugs in the back seems like a hassle, so I might just get a mechanic to install it for me.

@@Kim-gw6jv here is a video on 2grfe spark plug change. It’s little bit hassle to get to back plugs but there is no complex or tricky step. After TB and MAF cleaning, it takes little bit of driving for ECU to learn the best air/fuel mixture. In fact, ECU is constantly monitoring and making adjustments. At near 100K, you are due for spark plug change. Be aware that Amazon and eBay have cheaper but fake OEM plugs. Avoid those and only buy from a reputable auto parts store. And get the exact match as slight difference in firing cause misfire in these engines.

@@Kim-gw6jv Also keep a close eye on the oil level and see if it’s burning oil. Best way to do this fill the oil the top mark and drive 1000 miles and see how much it went down. I just drove 2200 round trip to Chicago on my 2013 Camry and it burned only 1/3 quart, which is excellent. Burning oil could indicate other problems like carbon buildup on piston and not efficient combustion.

I heard that we should not move throttle plate by hand.
@DIYLifeSkills
@DIYLifeSkills Жыл бұрын
For Toyota and Lexus, this is fine as there is no active throttle plate position sensor while engine is off. It’s spring loaded to pull back to close and motor opens it when engine is running. When engine is running, throttle position sensor activates and starts adjusting the plate opening as needed. After cleaning very dirty plate, engine may idle higher a bit and you just drive it normally and ECU will auto-calibrate as necessary

@DIYLifeSkills

For sure. The TB plate is connected to pretty strong spring so it’s hard to open it suddenly but the spring will slam it shut. So on close, guide it slowly to close and don’t let it slam shut.

That’s a myth for Toyota/Lexus cars as sensors only come into play when the engine is started. Car has no idea the plate opened and closed. And ECU constantly adjusts the plate opening based on all the air and fuel mixture ratio signatures compiled from MAF, oxygen sensor, RPM, etc.

It’s mainly due to cleaning spray getting into engine but that burns off within minutes. Also, depending on how dirty your MAF and TB were, after cleaning car’s computer needs time to make adjustment. Just drive normally for a day or two and it’ll go away once computer adjusts to cleaned TB and MAF signals.

Yeah you just have to carefully wiggle it. Being tight is actually good so that mass airflow sensor can compute air supply accurately without having extra air sneaking in

Using a micro fiber towel shouldnt be used cleaning inside the throttle body it will release fine materials as I even seen in this video happening falling into the throttle body, best to use red mechanics rags.
@DIYLifeSkills
@DIYLifeSkills Жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t worry about micro fiber particles coming out. You are doing this with no vacuum, so after you wet the TB plate with cleaning solution, just wipe away. And microfiber does better job at picking up more carbon and leave the surface clean. Definitely do not use old rag on this.

What about manual transmission
@DIYLifeSkills
@DIYLifeSkills 2 жыл бұрын
Transmission is to shift gears, and that's totally separate from TB & MAF that controls how much air is mixed with gas for optimal combustion. So manual trans also need to clean TB & MAF regularly.

@@hebaabdallah3518 Use the relearn steps in 16:56 . To put in drive, simply put in first gear while pressing on the brake. This is to expedite the idle relearn, if you drive the car, the car will relearn automatically eventually.
