Toyota / Lexus Rough Idle After Battery Change/Disconnect - Idle Reset Relearn Procedure

Quick & Easy steps to fix your car's rough idle problem. When you disconnect or replace your car battery the car will probably idle rough. You need to put your car in Idle Relearn / Reset Mode to reset your car's computer idle fuel mix. This is a very easy process with great results. No tools needed. You may also have to do this when you work on the car's throttle body or alternator.
In this video you will see the drastic change this procedure made on a Toyota Camry and it should also work on your Toyota, Lexus, Scion and other similar models.

I replaced the battery on my 2003 Camry which I’ve done several times before but this time my vehicle had all the symptoms of this video. I've had this problem on my Corolla every time I changed the battery or disconnected the terminals. It also works for the reverse situation. Cleaned the 250,000 mile throttlle body after changing the plugs. Come to find out, they were the original ngk plugs. Anyhow, i got it all back together to find it now idling at 2000 rpm. Unpluged the neg. Battery terminal for 30 min. Per a different video. Brought the idle down to 1100. Found this video did the thing for 7 min. And all better. Thanks a million. (2006 3.3 Highlander)

Any time you disconnect the battery the engine computer loses all its memory. Same as taking the PRAM battery out of a computer.

Dude you’re a legend!!! Just replaced my Valve cover gasket and had to disconnect batter before disconnecting my alternator to move the wires out of the way. Finished repair and drive off thinking it was all good and my car almost died at the first stop sign. Been sitting here making a list of things to check regarding the vacuum hoses and wires I unplugged/moved and found this video. Did this first since it was the easiest and my car is back to normal!

Man, you saved me. This was my last hope. I had disconnected the battery on my 08 Tacoma to upgrade the alternator. Ended up replacing valve cover gaskets, fuel injectors, fuel regulator, fuel pump upgrade, intake plenum gasket, upgraded to URD Tundra 74mm throttle body…etc. I thought I had messed something up. Thank you, this video was a HUUUUUGE help!! Not once but twice. Replaced my battery, had this problem, fixed it. 3 weeks later, battery terminal was slightly loose and caused the car to lose all power when I tried to turn the engine on. Cleaned and tightened it really tight and tried again and car turned on but same problem as before, very rough idle. Did this again and I’m good to go. Totally helped that we have literally the exact same car except I’m at 154k mileage haha

Just did both sequences for throttle reset based off this video and google. My 2020 trd Tacoma had a set idle of 1,000 after I did this but then 5 minutes down the road it went back to idling around 600 rpm again. 74k miles exact

Had my fuel injector pump/filter/control valve all serviced. Car was working fine again. One day at a red right behind someone I am stiing peacefully and suddenly the idle revs between 1 and 2 and jerks forward WITH MY FOOT ON THE BRAKE! My brain went. Since then I stayed 2 cars behind a person at a red light. Freeway was no issue. Very smooth over 40 mph. But after some time I noticed the idle was acting weird. Fluctuating and once it got stuck at 2. Felt like the car was self driving and I was completely out of control. Well went back to the guys. This time they cleaned all the carbon build up out. Re-checked the idle control valve and air flow. And for free. This help by 90 percent. I drove 2 hours home by street just testing everything out and taking my time and the car was running so much better. Then in two days start noticing unstable idling just at red lights only. Everything improved except this one issue. The mechanics checked everything. No codes. It is also good to keep gas above a quarter tank. I woke up today with this issue on my mind went right to YT and found your video. I followed all steps exact and this literally work. I sat as if at a red light for 7 minutes and the idles was steady as ever. Now my car was idling OVER 1000. I thought the car was just gonna drive itself. Upon start it hovered between 1 and 2 and took forever to come down. Then it would lower but stay above 1000. Now it is at a stable 750. And when I started it did not hover at all. It immediately came up and right back to 750 and stabalized. Not sure if the guys needed to disconnect my battery for the services they provided but this video really helped. I saw a difference right away. I will keep monitoring the idle to see how stable it remains. I have a 2002 Hyundai Sonata. Very good and strong bodied car.

Had to change my starter, and once I put it on the idled horrible and wouldn't stay running. Died on me at a stop sign. My 2004 camry dies after idling at low rpm. Then it doesn't start. I got my starter tested at Advance Auto Parts, and it ran over there and passed the test. Now everytime my car dies after idling at extremely low rpm, i have to whack the starter a couple times to start. I cant even do this procedure if the car keeps dying on me.

Excellent video and works very well on my toyota Corolla. There is another way to avoid this if you are not confident it might work and that is to connect cables from your car battery to another 12 volt battery, then disconnect the Neg on the car battery and connect your charger leads if you only want to charge the battery. The other 12 v battery will continue to provide power to the computer and then when finished, you put back on Neg battery terminal and tighten and then disconnect 2 cables to spare battery. This way power is always applied to the cars leads at all times and computer never without power. make sure you connect same to same- Pos to pos and neg to neg NEVER pos to neg or car and computer will get 24 volts and be toast!!! So when jumping a battery for any purpose same to same ONLY....

Got a 2011 4Runner. Changed the battery and turned it on, ran out for 3 to 5 minutes with my for on the pedal at around 2k RPM. Turned it off, turned it back on and it's offering at 750 RPM and perfect. Not sure if you need to do these steps, but I followed the steps I mentioned which is the way to reset Hondas and it works for The 4Runner.

It dawned on me that it could be electrical as the brake lights come on when my foot is on the brake. Like it robs voltage from the ignition system.
